DF Gameplay Questions / Hauling changes

So what's the thinking behind having the dwarves hauling bins to items, instead of items to bins like they used to? I'm getting sick of jobs getting cancelled and I'm failing to see any benefits to the change.

DF Gameplay Questions / A little rusty

So I'm playing again after a fairly long hiatus, I'm having a problem that should be really simple but I can't see what's wrong, whenever I queue a brew drink job in my still I'm getting told there's no distillable item. I have a stockpile full of plump helmets (and empty barrels) and they're set in the kitchen menu to be available to brew, and the kitchen menu is definitely registering that I have some available. I really don't get why it isn't working.

DF Gameplay Questions / Pig iron / steel production stopped

This started halfway through my last fortress and seems to have carried on into a new fortress / world, right now I have a functional magma smelter and access to marble for flux which and iron bars that I'm smelting from limonite, in the last fortress I had standard forges but still had plenty of coke for fuel. When I select pig iron (in red) on my smelter's job list it has "takes place at smelter" in red and "requires fuel" is in yellow, does anyone half an idea of what I may have done wrong? Marble is unreserved and green in the stones menu, but switching it to reserved makes no difference anyway, also my smelters are still capable of producing other ores that are available to me such as electrum and billon.

DF Gameplay Questions / Cancels chain animal: Could not find path

One of my guards is stuck in place and this message is repeating, I assigned a different squad a war dog and a war leopard, which seems to cause a little difficulty when the squad go inactive / have no orders but nothing this annoying until now, where does he need to take it? I've built a restraint but that doesn't make any difference, do I need to assign it to something / someone? I'm not even sure which animal is causing the problem.

DF Gameplay Questions / Random attacking in fort

I've reached a certain point where a random member of my guard attacks a random member of my dwarves for seemingly no reason, Nobody is unhappy, they just seem to pick any nearby dwarf to start a fight with. I've savescummed a little to try and figure it out and it changes which member of the guard attacks every time. Any ideas?

DF Gameplay Questions / Masterwork bolts lost.

So my bone carver is finally legendary and is now regularly making masterwork bone bolts, but whenever these bolts are used up by my hunter / military dwarves I get a message telling me his masterwork has been lost, which I'm assuming makes for an unhappy little dwarf. Is there any way around this issue? Seems a bit pointless training this guy up to legendary if I can't even use his best work without it upsetting him.

DF Gameplay Questions / No fuel for smelter

Just picked up the game again after not playing for a while and having a small problem, got plenty of lignite but my smelter doesn't seem to register it, make coke from lignite is still in red and it says I need fuel. I'm pretty sure I've had trouble with this before but I can't remember how I fixed it, I've tried switching lignite's status back and forth in the stones menu but to no effect. Any ideas?

Is there any particular tag in the raws that I can change to stop my dwarfs from having children? I like to keep them sociable to keep up morale and avoid tantrums, but I'm getting a new baby dropped every 5 minutes, it's rediculous.

What are the requirements to kickstart economy these days? Or just how do I get any nobles at all, I've gotten nothing beyond a mayor. My population is quite high and we're producing quite a lot of wealth, have actually just reached all the requirements to become to capital too.

So finally got around to making some soap, a leatherworker of mine wants to clean himself off, but every time he picks up the soap I get this message, what else is he looking for that could be innaccessible? Is it a water source? There's a stream on the surface and several lakes underground that he can reach.

Trying to produce soap but keep getting this message, I've got plenty of fresh barrels in my furniture stockpile, plenty of buckets full of lye, but no transference between the two, what am I missing?

DF Gameplay Questions / Plaster for my hospital

Okay, so I have several full bags of gypsum powder made and deposited in my furniture stockpile, and an operational hospital with several chests for storage. Other items on the hospital checklist (crutches, splints, etc) have been brought along and deposited by my dwarves, but not the powder. I thought you might need to use the build command to put bags in as containers themselves, but they don't show up on the list. Any idea what I should be doing here?

I have a militia commander and a captain of the guard, which allows me to make 2 squads, but I have no militia captain slot in my nobles screen and cannot make anymore squads. I'm pretty sure there used to be a captain slot on my nobles screen, but how can it go missing?

DF Gameplay Questions / Military issues

My arsenal dwarf seems to have stopped doing his job at some point, I equipped my dwarves with training weapons earlier on and have managed to switch a couple of them out to real weaponry, but the rest are holding on to the training gear. I've switched them for specific weaponry on the militray screen and my arsenal dwarf isn't busy with anything. Another thing that keeps happening is when I assign my squad to attack an incoming ambush half of them just keep running in and out of my fortress, do scheduled orders (patrol, train, etc) interfere with direct orders (attack)?

I'm guessing this is all just glitches but I wanted to check, my fort has ground to a halt until I can deal with one tiny little goblin ambush, and my dwarves are trying to bruise them to death with bits of wood or just running around like idiots.

Just started playing again since the latest version came out, starting to remember that long lost felling of poking at dwarves with sticks and wondering why they won't do what I want them too. Current problem is that plump helmet spawns have suddenly stopped producing seeds upon eating / brewing in the middle of a game. My farm has dried up and I'm just being told there are no seeds available for planting, or something similar. I have seeds enabled in my food stores, is this some other change made to farming now?
