DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Finding quest givers
« on: December 19, 2009, 07:35:18 pm »
Is there an easier way to locate people within settlements who give you jobs to do? The room by room approach has become very tedious, very quickly.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Finding a shop
« on: December 19, 2009, 11:18:08 am »
Just started up my first adventure after abandoning my first fortress, have had some luck in taking out a giant and looted everything nearby, but I can't find anywhere to sell it all off. I've completely searched through 3 dwarven settlements and even a couple of elven ones, spoken to everyone I could see just in case but I haven't seen hide nor hair of a shop, is this normal? Is there something really obvious that I'm missing or do I just need to keep searching?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Pig iron demands
« on: November 24, 2009, 05:20:59 pm »
My tax collector is demanding that pig iron items be made....so...what the heck can I make out of pig iron that will satisfy him? There's nothing in the metalsmith's forge that can be made with it, I'm stumped....

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Attracting royalty
« on: November 23, 2009, 03:05:21 pm »
Can anyone give me an idea of just what they were at requirements wise when they have attracted a king in previous fortresses? I have a duchy, my architectural value is a little over 1.2 million, I have a limestone rock road leading away from my fortress and I've made several offerings to the dwarven caravan (although that might not actually make any difference right now?). I've reached the population cap but have been assured that won't stop them from coming if the conditions are met.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Contruction question
« on: November 23, 2009, 10:11:57 am »
I'm in the middle of building a gigantic golden warhammer in my fortress' courtyard for the hell of it, and I was wondering if it's possible to support (hold up) built walls from above? Basically if I build several z levels of walls are they solidly connected or do they just sit on top of each other? Here is the basic design of the hammer, notice where the hammerheads flare out at the bottom -

  |----\ |----|  /----|
  |       -|----|-       |
  |        |----|         |
  |       -|----|-       |
  |----/ |----|  \----|  <----this level here
           |----|
           |----|
           |----|
           |----|
           |----|
           |----|
           |----|
           |----|
           |----|
           |----|

I know how I'd be able to build it, just have the entire layer fixed to the main structure, build the level above and then remove the connecting walls, but would it stay up? If not, is there anyway I  can go about making such a structure?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Looking for suggestions...
« on: November 20, 2009, 05:57:57 pm »
...on what to do with a stockpile of 250-300 gold bars / blocks / ore that I haven't much use for, making a fair living off of steel and platinum, so I just want to use the gold to make something ridiculous and huge. My main idea is just a simple gold spire reaching up to the sky and capped with platinum built in the courtyard of my fortress as testimony to my dwarve's craftmanship, but it's a little vanilla, so I want to consider the unusual as well before I set my masons to work.

DF Gameplay Questions / Encrusting goods / furniture
« on: November 19, 2009, 05:44:55 pm »
Whenever I set a queue of jobs for encrusting furniture with gems my gem setter, instead of putting one gem in one piece of furniture, proceeds to encrust every gem I line up in the one item. Is there any way I can make sure he moves from one piece of furniture to the next, other than setting up a new job every time the last one is finished and the item is moved out of the way?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Walking on the bodies of my enemies
« on: November 19, 2009, 11:19:28 am »
I know seeing the dead bodies of friends has a bad effect on a dwarf's mood, but how about just goblin corpses? I've decided to let the bodies and severed limbs start piling up against my fortress walls as a testament to the many failed sieges against me and as a very graphic warning to whatever goblins may yet still be waiting in the hills, but I want to be sure this won't upset any of my dwarves who work outside.

DF Gameplay Questions / Squad grouping
« on: November 18, 2009, 05:12:57 pm »
Whenever a member of any particular military squad gets injured (or has to eat, or drink, etc), generally the rest of the squad will follow them even whilst they're supposed to be on duty, is there any way I can stop this grouping without removing the soldier in question from the squad?

DF Gameplay Questions / Rotten remains
« on: November 18, 2009, 09:10:42 am »
Why am I having to explicitly mark animal remains for dumping before anything gets done these days? I'm sure the amount of trash has gone up since my dwarf / cat population has gotten so big, but I don't remember having to do this even once back in the early days. I have plenty of idlers around with hauling active when the cats drop this stuff but I still have to do this myself before rot kicks in, it's everything I can do right now fighting a constant war against miasma, I'd just like to be able to leave my fortress for 5 minutes while I deal with other issues.

DF Gameplay Questions / Caravan problem
« on: November 16, 2009, 08:58:32 am »
A cart from the dwarven caravan got stuck on it's way into my fortress just as a 40 goblin siege army decided to rear it's ugly head. The cart was annihilated of course, and now the I'm being told there are no merchants trading right now, even though the rest of the caravan is still there. I can deal without a trade for this year, but is this going to cause problems from here on out? Will I still be able to trade with them in future? Will they start attacks on my fortress for the death of their compatriots? I'd rather have some idea now so I can revert to my last save, instead of playing another year only to get attacked.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dragons
« on: November 15, 2009, 12:36:37 pm »
Can dragons only be butchered if they have been caught live in a cage? Just killed one and was looking forward to using the skin but I'm being told there's no unrotten butcherable animal available.

DF Gameplay Questions / Item ownership
« on: November 15, 2009, 12:13:45 am »
Is there any way to remove ownership of items? My fortress is littered with discarded clothing and in one case a leg torn off by a zombie dragon that my dwarves will not dump due to them being owned. I'm quite house proud when it comes to my fortress and would like to tidy all this up.

DF Gameplay Questions / Miasma issue
« on: November 13, 2009, 12:04:49 pm »
My butcher's workshop has started constantly pumping out miasma even though there's nothing in there. I've stopped all butchery and sealed the room off in the meantime, but why is miasma being created when I can't see any rotten remains (or anything else for that matter) on any tile in there?

DF Gameplay Questions / Physical damage
« on: November 12, 2009, 08:20:15 pm »
I've had a look at the wiki for this and not found anything specific for permanent damage, but it doesn't look good anyway - my only champion took a pretty bad blow to the lower body, enough to make it go yellow (break), and then had a lengthy recovery period before getting back up on his feet. Looking at his damage report now bottom his lower spine is seen in brown. I'm guessing this is denoting permanent damage, but how bad does it being in brown mean? Can he still fight or should I just pull an old yeller?
