DF Gameplay Questions / Encrusting goods / furniture
« on: November 19, 2009, 05:44:55 pm »
Whenever I set a queue of jobs for encrusting furniture with gems my gem setter, instead of putting one gem in one piece of furniture, proceeds to encrust every gem I line up in the one item. Is there any way I can make sure he moves from one piece of furniture to the next, other than setting up a new job every time the last one is finished and the item is moved out of the way?

Yeah, got stockpiles for bones and rotting materials set up, I can keep them full with butchered kittens and puppies from inside my fort, I just quite like the idea of the entrance to my fort being steeped in dead goblins. So my military can look over them and remember the good times :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Walking on the bodies of my enemies

I know seeing the dead bodies of friends has a bad effect on a dwarf's mood, but how about just goblin corpses? I've decided to let the bodies and severed limbs start piling up against my fortress walls as a testament to the many failed sieges against me and as a very graphic warning to whatever goblins may yet still be waiting in the hills, but I want to be sure this won't upset any of my dwarves who work outside.

Quick one on architectural value, I got into the idea of engraving a little late so I'm fairly unaware of just how much value it adds, so, what would be more valuable in everyone's opinion, a room built of gold blocks, or a room smoothed and (masterfully) engraved out of limestone? Trying to entice some royalty and just tapped into a half dozen veins of gold ore deep underground.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Squad grouping

If you want everything in your military to work perfectly, splitting them all up really is the best option.

Also, you don't need forty five soldiers. I typically do fine with ten.

Yeah, I know, but it looks so much better to have large groups of military dwarves patrolling my walls rather than have dozens of dwarves with useless professions hauling rock. Besides, I'm slaughtering the biggest orc sieges possible without breaking a sweat, I like my army :)

So I should issue commands for every single dwarf in my military? Damn, I've got like 45 dwarves in active service, it takes long enough to organise the six squads I have them all grouped in, is splitting them all up really my best option?

Whenever a member of any particular military squad gets injured (or has to eat, or drink, etc), generally the rest of the squad will follow them even whilst they're supposed to be on duty, is there any way I can stop this grouping without removing the soldier in question from the squad?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Rotten remains

Do you have a refuse pile set to accept vermin corpses? Did you accidentally disable hauling refuse from the orders menu?

Ah, yes, it was the refuse settings, split the original into two piles, one indoors for bones and shells, one outdoors for rotting material, looks like I missed remains when I was setting it up. Thanks :)

DF Gameplay Questions / Rotten remains

Why am I having to explicitly mark animal remains for dumping before anything gets done these days? I'm sure the amount of trash has gone up since my dwarf / cat population has gotten so big, but I don't remember having to do this even once back in the early days. I have plenty of idlers around with hauling active when the cats drop this stuff but I still have to do this myself before rot kicks in, it's everything I can do right now fighting a constant war against miasma, I'd just like to be able to leave my fortress for 5 minutes while I deal with other issues.

Here's a small one, what can I do to stop my hunters getting slaughtered by packs of wolves when I'm not looking? I like the extra source of food, but usually within a season of one joining my fortress I get a message about him being unconscious, then when I go to check on them they're surrounded and being eaten alive.

Make them super. Train them up in pump operation or milling first, then draft them to spar and use crossbows, and undraft them to hunting before they get to Hero status.

Fair play, I can keep one back in the archery range for a while. One more little one - If I haven't met the requirements to have a king / queen come to my fortress before I've hit the population cap, will they come after this if the requirements are then met?

Yes. They LOVE to push you over the cap.

But yeah, feel free to decorate their rooms with masterwork spikes and artifact mechanisms, with a mysterious lever outside.

I've actually got 2 artifact floodgates I've been looking for a use for, I'll have to see if I can pump the river anywhere near their quarters. :)

As far as I know (note: do not take as given) they'll show up as part of a migration, so you'll need to be below the cap.

Don't think that's correct - they show up when a migration would normally happen.  If you're at your pop cap, you still get migrant nobles, np.

That's good, I've already started decorating their rooms. :)

That's what I figure too, but the population cap does seem to be somewhat lax, my last lot of immigrants brought it above the cap by a few, plus my dwarves are still breeding like bearded bunnies.
