DF Gameplay Questions / Animal cleaning

My cats are absolutely drenched in vomit and blood, is there anything that can be done about this? Or is just how dwarves like...no, actually, that's too low a joke a sink to. Obviously not a thing that's impeding daily life for my dwarves (unless there's some emotional trigger I'm unaware of), just a minor annoyance.

If you put floors in the way, then no, the bucket can't lower. You'd need to go in and channel out underneath the well for each floor. I forget how deep a well can reach, however.

Also, I doubt you'll need all that much water to begin with, especially if your basin will still be connected to the river. Whenever winter rolls around, it won't feed the basin, but any other season the water will still flow.

In fact, it's likely that the pressure will flood your fortress unless you add a floodgate or pressure relieving system.

Ah, so if I use channel on every section on every floor that will open the whole thing up? Perfect, thanks. And yeah, how many floors I need to dig is going to take a little experimenting, but I'll figure that out. I've been thinking about the pressure and I can't see much that I'd need to do, the well itself will be a floor above the river's natural one, I already tried a test well using staircases to let the water in to the lower floors as I said in my first post and sealed off the top floor with a wall, seemed to be okay.

I'm a little confused as to whether this is going to work, and what to do about it if it doesn't. Basically I'm channeling an above ground river underground into a basin running 6 or 7 levels deep and building a well on the level above in the hope of providing my dwarves with water in the winter when all the surface water freezes over. Each level of this basin is basically dug out with stairs at one end to allow the water to fill it up. However, once the dwarves start using the well and the top level's worth of water is used my well is not going to be able to reach the lower levels with the floors in the way is it? Is there a way I can dig out a wide shaft on the z axis without all the floors? If not, would the well work if the stairways are dug out directly underneath the well?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Apathetic recruit

Well, since he is hungry , thirsty, very drowsy and miserable,
AND he does show up in your (u)nit list, but not in your (m)ilitary screen...

He shows 6 out of 7 characteristics of both melancholy and insanity, as Quietust already suggested.
Further studies could narrow down the possibilities to one:

Did he still wear clothes?

(melancholy dwarves just sulk around until they find a nice cliff to throw themselves off, or some nice river to drown themselves in; insane dwarves strip off their clothes and run around babbling until they die of thirst or hunger)

As for the cause of these 100%-fatality illnesses.. Well.. One possibility is that your dwarf failed a mood.. But I guess you would have noticed that.
Also, if unhappy enough, any dwarf can snap and go melancholy / stark raving mad / berserk.

Now that you mention it he didn't leave any equipment behind when he starved to death in my courtyard. I was wondering about that.

S'okay, he keeled over and someone dragged him off to the graveyard. At least he isn't bugging me any more. One part of the problem is maybe he was supposed to be resting up in bed for that minor injury? Following on from that I've just realised that my dwarves have no water supply during the winter. Well, no, I did already realise that, I just didn't have a reason to care until a goblin attack laid up a couple of recruits in bed and my peons can't take any water to them, so they're currently dehydrating waiting for the thaw.

On a sidenote, a lowly peasant who was making unreasonable demands for his strange mood just went berserk and beat the mayor to death with his bare hands. I love this game.

I have a recruit wandering around aimlessly, he's not really injured apart from some damage to his right leg, but he is thirsty, hungry, very drowsy and miserable. What's more is while he is in my dwarf roster, when I look for him in my military roster he simply isn't there. There's plenty of food / drink around, no other dwarf has this problem, and I can't get him to stand down or leave the military. Is this just a bug or I'm I supposed to be doing something for him?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bin issues
« on: November 10, 2009, 08:55:38 am »
When you have traders visiting, q - g on your trade depot, if there're bins which have [trADE] or [PENDING] (caps?) then they're "tasked for trade" you can disable it on that screen, or wait til the traders leave. For the max bins, q on the stockpile and it's right there, it'll have max bins and max barrels, which you can change with... /*-+ I think.

Thanks, turns out it wasn't either of those, but min / max barrels lead me to the reserved bins on the stockpile menu, which I apparently must've nudged by mistake at some point, so problem solved. Thanks for all the help everyone.

Shameless self bump, all I need to know is where I go to check these -

2. you task empty bins for trade ?
3. you set Max Bin in stokpile menu to 0?

If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated.

If you can, hold back a few valuable gemstones and try to get a little platinum, then just wait til one of your crafters has a mood, I got a 650k artifact on my 2nd year and the dwarves just came flooding in.

Do you have empty bins available?

Yep, there's a few waiting in my furniture stockpile, not going anywhere though.

Is everything in the stockpile already stored in bins? They only bring new ones when they can put stuff into them.

Nope, my finished goods stockpile in particular is a mess, completely full and not a bin in sight.

3. you set Max Bin in stokpile menu to 0?

Possibly one of these two, where do I need to go to check these?

My dwarves have stopped taking new bins to stockpiles all of a sudden. I think it may have happened around about the time I sold a bin of crafted goods, including the bin, at the trade depot, but that may be completely unrelated. What sort of situations could cause this to be happening? Noob here, in case you couldn't tell.  ;D
