Life Advice / Re: Creating a Sword

The only way to get a decent sword by casting is to use bronze, which is something I've been trying to do for a while now. Getting the materials and a fire hot enough is very difficult.
I'd seriously suggest something simpler; steel works excellently for making blades. You can probably find a steel bar easily enough. Try heating it up and hammering the crap out of it (wear gloves). Flatten it out, manipulate the shape. Anvils or an anvil-like object are almost necessary; a flat block of steel or iron will probably work for your purposes. I've been using an old cast iron stove (anvils are expensive, and it's not like you can ship them) and it's less than ideal.
Realistically, your first project shouldn't be a sword. It doesn't even really matter what the materials of your first few projects are -- you need to get a handle on how metal works and feels before you can do anything with it.
For the anvil, I bought one pretty cheap at a store, it was 13 -15 $ or something.(Not second hand, it was brand new) It was fairly small, about 11 lbs but for knife making it's perfect.
