DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Creating a Lock tight Animal Pit

Hey everyone, came here today to discuss something that really bothers me, as I can never create a perfect way to do this. Everyone hates animals hanging out in their meeting halls, cows standing all over the tables and such. The topic today is creating an animal pit that is air tight. The issue I have is even no matter how many doors I create that are tight, animals pass through when a dwarf goes into the room to get a dog to train. How do you guys go about creating a locktight animal pit?

DF Gameplay Questions / Suddenly Can't Build Anything

When ever I try and build a construction, like a wall or floor, it says no access to building material non-economic items. Plus, my certain dwarfs are just standing around starving, when I have clearly enough food. Everything is easy to get to, the dwarf just won't budge. This happened after I build a moat around my fort, its kinda a castle thingy, and the only entrance is with drawbridges. Could this have something to do with it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Archery Ranges

So I built a bunch of archery ranges to train up a crossbow team, but no one ever trains. I made them a room and selected the squad for training, but most of the time nothing happens, or one guy shoots, I'm eating cat food, but I have 5 targets. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I have plenty of bolts and crossbows also.

Twice in a recent fortress of mine I've had my baron actually tried to communicate with the beasts that come to my fort. During one of his conversations, the beast got angry and started destroying chairs and tables, but not harming dwarfs, and I could not attack him. Then the beast listened to my dwarf again and calmed down and hanged out for awhile until leaving. This happened again where my baron trys to go and talk to them. It says Conduct Meeting on him. This is pretty sweet I gotta say, anyone have any experience with this?

Bought and captured a bunch of animals, they are all in cages in a animal stock pile, but I can't get them all into the same cage. I assign it, but none of my dwarfs do anything about it.

My refuse stockpile is overflowing with vermin remains. Do these have any importance? Or should I just dump them into the pits along with the elves?

Not sure if this is a bug or I'm doing something wrong, but my dwarfs in the military are always unhappy. I tried de-activate, but they are still training.

For some reason, I can not link my ice bridge to a lever. Every time I try to, the lever says there is nothing it can be linked to. is this because the bridge is made of ice?

DF Gameplay Questions / Damn Green Slime

So, let me just give you some background info.
Map I'm on, theres some low areas, really safe, but its right next to a volcano, and this volcano area is covered in Greenslime, Gaint Bats, Batman,a whole mess of bad things. My dwarves keep going over there to collect what not, random things like a sock or a shirt. So far to show I don't like this, I usually forbid the items I find. Most of the time I can't find all the items.

tl;dr: Anyway for dwarves to go outside and not go into the mountains and die for a sock?

EDIT: Give a impression how bad things are, 3 of my men died while typing this. Out of a fort of 40 dwarves. Also upon embarking, I started in the mountains. The only way they original 7 to survive was to dig a hole right there, and hide everything in there until a miner carved a tunnel to wherever the real fort was going to be. By FAR this is the hardest map I've played on.

Just got my first wet season, do ponds not dry up during this season? Or does it just rain more? It's not like it really matters since my fort is under constant siege, and I'm without Military or defense.

Just started a fort, digging out some sand for some nice plump helmet farms, but I get these Lung fish EVERYWERE. Anyway to kill em? Or at least not see them. Theres at least 20.

DF Suggestions / SUGGESTION: Number of Tiles Designated

What if, lets say when your are designating tiles to be mined, after you start designating, the cross hair turns into a number, and that number represents the number of tiles you have selected. This would help as visually seeing how many tiles in a number instead of counting yourself. It would help speed up fort building a ton for me, I always forget how many tiles I need to designate and have to recount like 2 or 3 times until I'm absolutely sure its what I want.
