Glad to hear you're keeping yourself busy with interesting work!  I hope you end up having the time (and inclination) to keep working on Ogre; I'd love to see the result of the time you've put in so far.  Also, if you find that you're just not able to keep going on it, you might consider open sourcing the code as long as there isn't anything in there that's licensed or that you need to keep closed for other reasons.

Uirst McSheriff: Cow McMooMoo, Urist McAnimalDissector claims you are a vampire. What say you?
Cow: Moooo

Urist McSheriff: IT HUNGERS FOR DWARVEN BLOOD  DWARVES HUNGER FOR ITS BURGERS! KILL IT KILL IT KILL IT!

FIFY.  You know, when you think about it, we treat cows an awful lot like vampires treat us...

7/10.

5/10 just because sprites are awesome, but +2 for DF topicality.

Now that is how glass should look.  The magma cube looms greatly.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Building Structures Aboveground
« on: October 30, 2011, 07:30:15 pm »
If you're building multi-z above ground constructions, you'll eventually want to use scaffolding to build walls you couldn't otherwise access.  Most people seem to use floors for this when they get started.  For example, they'll build a line of floors such that dwarfs can build walls on top of existing walls one level below, and then remove the floors one tile at a time.

I recommend using up/down stairs instead.  Just like floors, stairs provide support and allow orthogonal access to designated constructions.  Unlike floors, stairs also allow for up and down travel, which makes access easy and intuitive.  They can also be deconstructed from below, which makes removing unwanted scaffolding a breeze.

Definitely have fun with it.  Take your time, no one else is in line right now, so there's no need to ruch.  The millstones of Skyscrapes grind slow, but they grind exceedingly fine.  Just don't disappear without telling anyone.

I'm pretty familiar with the fortress, so if you're confused or have questions feel free to post here or PM me.

The lack of reply leads me to interpret the last comment as a forfeiture.

Mitchewawa, it seems that you are up.  The fort is crazy, big, and complicated.  Taking a turn is no easy task, as you've seen from the quickness with which others have bowed out.

Are you game?

Are you saying you want to be skipped?

So, there are three glass towers coming out of the lake halfway up.  Two are pretty straightforward.  You may have noticed the other looks pretty odd.  I'm not happy with how it turned out in Overseer or Stonesense, but I really like the idea and I'll have to give it a shot again some time.

I wanted to make something with an organic look.  Something reminiscent of a tree or a vine.  I decided to have a small circular tower spiral as it goes up and have branches "bud" off as it goes around. Like I said, I'm kind of dissappointed with how the result looks in the visualizers, but I think it actually looks alright in the game as you scroll levels.  Maybe that's because the game requires so much imagination, and I'm just seeing what I want to see rather than what's there.

Either way, I put together a .gif that might give a better impression of the rotation and branching I was going for:

Spoiler:  WFT is this? (click to show/hide)

You can continue the ribbon or take it down a floor or two if you want.  It's your call.

I hope you can get a militia up and running.  There seems to be a carryover bug from an older version (we started this on 31.02) that prevents us from assigning a militia leader.

Also, check out the points of interest on the map Sizik posted if you want a tour of the place.  I only got about halfway up the tower, but I'll keep going tonight.

Thanks for uploading the map!  I went over and started putting in some points of interest.  I'd like to help make it as comprehensive as possible, but right now I need to get to sleep.
