DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The DF2010 Little Questions Thread

My lizzards are piling up. what do I do? Do i just dump the traps? My dwarfs seem not to be able to tame them at the kennel.

Lizards are [PET_EXOTIC] meaning that one of the current bugs, namely with the Dungeon Master (LINK). They cannot be tamed at the moment. If you would like, you could edit the raws of your world to make them normally tameable. Then you could tame them, put some up for adoption, and/or sell them.

In addition, you could move the stockpile to the middle of the meeting room. I believe dwarves will still eat the closest thing, which in this case will be delicious, delicious lizard. Just make sure it's a very NICE meeting room.

I thought that behaviour was granted to us by the courtesy of the Quartermaster which, luckily, has been fired in more recent updates.

Is that still the case?!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The most bothersome mount
« on: May 14, 2011, 07:07:13 pm »
It's quite simple, actually. What do mounts NOT have that the goblins do? Armor. You know what cuts flesh? Green glass discs, spikes - and just about everything else.

Line the landscape with weapon traps with 1-3 green glass serrated discs. Be prepared for many cut-off legs.

If you're feeling patient and sadistic, see if you can successfully kill a forgotten beast with toxic blood outside your fortress. Watch beak dogs rot away. Apply magma twice, and tenderize lovingly with an axe. Repeat the next year.

Press ESC in any window, one of the options should be "key bindings" or somesuch

If you're new, do yourself a HUGE favour and visit http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Main_Page

Protip: If you like long text files, go over to http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Key_binding , and the appropriate file inside your game, where you can manually change all key bindings

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Warhammers and Maces
« on: May 03, 2011, 06:12:11 pm »
While this reflects in-game numbers, here's a real world perspective - maces [LINK] are much more of a universal weapon, designed to crush bone and light armor. Warhammers [LINK] are a very specialized version, developed much later, with the sole purpose of overcoming stronger armor. They are essentially equivalent to armor-piercing rounds in most shooters - very effective against armoured things, but mediocre versus everything else.

If you're comparing them to axes or swords, blunt weapons simply don't need to sever - they always deal damage. And unlike spears, they don't need to penetrate. Think about maces as lesser, but guaranteed, damage. Think about warhammers the same, but for armoured enemies.

Do you have more details? How old? What platform? What did the graphics look like?

It was a PC game, circa windows 95. The graphics were decent. I really can't remember enough specific about that game...

I used to play this arcade/platformer, where you are a computer chip. You travel across a computer world, and upgrade over time. Your mission was to rescue your girlfriend or somesuch.

Anyone?

No, not the one. It was a side-scrolling platformer, and with proper graphics as compared to chip's challenge

Maybe you can help me remember it! It was a platformer, where you played as a computer chip inside a computer, and had to eventually rescue your girlfriend. That's all I remember, beside it having been a blast. Now I can't remember what it was.... help?

Just in case, make one of each workshop. Mason and Metalsmith are likely candidates.

Didn't see it mentioned anywhere, but - now that wood is in decent supply, consider investigating Fertilizer for precious crops, as well as early farming. It increases food yield significantly.

You will need to create a new one of whatever gets the [Yarn] tag. If it's hair, be sure to slaughter a new horse.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Glass trap components
« on: March 31, 2011, 10:49:21 pm »
In regards to earlier comments, in about .31.10 or so, I distinctly remember having a goblin that survived all my traps because he leveled up on the weaker outer ones, and then he proceeded to completely annihilate my military because he became so highly skilled. So, unless that was changed, be aware that many glass traps could potentially result in super-goblins. You know, faster than a speeding bullet...
