Make sure you've build the "down" portion of the stairway above the "up" portion.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I don't want to play anymore....

Save-breaking updates are the best kind.  The way Toady approaches updates, save breakers will often significantly change the game and how we play it.  Look at all the mind boggling new features coming out.  I've read multiple times that this will be the most fundamental change to the game since z-levels were added.

In a way, the DF coming out won't be the same game we've all played.  Forget everything you know about DF; in a few weeks we'll all be Dabbling Gamers again.

Armok, I'm excited.

Whoa, my thread is still going.

Alway - Yes, I think ash is the big deal in that kind of eruption.

Quantum Toast - Six Days?  But was it generated using an Intel 4004 or an i7?

When I go back and look at the fortress I worked on that week, I don't remember doing any of it.

Murder was punished by "ejection" out of the space ship
Was Laura Roslin the captain?

I had the flu more than once in my life, and never I was so sick as to be unable to at least sit in a computer for a few minutes. I fear he had to be taken to a hospital or something as such.

I had the flu earlier this year.  I probably should have gone to the hospital.  I don't remember chunks of that week and suffered maddening fever dreams.  Fortunately, I had just started playing Dwarf Fortress, so I spent a lot of time doing that.

Unfortunately, I had just started playing Dwarf Fortress, so my fever dreams involved squashing ascii characters in this ridiculous endless game.  I started with a square that I could unfold in any orthogonal direction to squash the characters.  Over time, the shape got huge.  In my delirium I was trying to hold as much of the shape in my mind as possible while continuing to play.  It was torture that haunted me upon waking.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Getting rid of pets
« on: December 18, 2009, 04:37:20 am »
Keep in mind that after you get the pet population under control, it's okay to have a few cats.  Male cats.  4-5 male cats can keep vermin problem way down without being a nuisance.

It never bothers me when immigrants being non-cat pets.  Animals die every so often, and if there's a breeding pair, I occasionally get a nice stack of bones from offspring.  Cows and horses are especially welcome.  For any animal other than cats, as long as you mark all offspring for butchery, your pet population will die out eventually.

If you do opt to keep a few male cats for vermin control, remember to buy replacements from caravans.

I disagree.  I think that's perfectly in the DF spirit.

What's your major/job, Impaler? (If I may ask.)

The Siberian Traps on the other hand...

I personally like the idea that a powerful impact could have caused the Siberian Traps and contributed to the extinction.  The idea of something hitting the Earth so hard on one side that the planet bleeds magma from the opposite side gives me an incredible mental image.

Sure, impaler, I was sloppy.  I can accept that criticism.  But in my defense, I posted a link to an article that handled it all much better than my little paraphrase.  I just felt insulted by your initial response.

I still wanna know what a dwarf fortress in a Caldera would entail.  Could mining too much cause that runaway reaction?  Would an eruption have world ramifications?  Maybe slower-growing trees or less abundant wildlife?

Edit: (I made an edit to avoid double-posting, but realized it made no sense, and deleted it.)

If you mine out above the chamber and channel down, you can use them for some pretty effective archery practice.  If you use only one archer to practice there, he'll have a pretty great kill list.

To reveal the clowns, des(i)gnate a pit and toss strays down there.

Do this until the strays live, then rejoice that your framerate is back and you've got one bad-ass archer.

This is getting out of hand.  I clearly did not say that the Yellowstone Caldera could do that.  Just "Supervolcanos."  Which yes, is true.  The Permian Extinction, caused by extreme (super?) volcanic activity killed way more than 50% of the species on Earth.

Sure, Yellowstone isn't going to kill us.  I agree!  But it could make life in this hemisphere dark and gloomy for a while - and that's a cool thing to know.

The last thing I want to do is start insulting people and let this erupt (heh heh) into a flame (heh) war.

Ridiculous, this statement implies a total lack of understanding...

I didn't use "life as we know it" because it sounded too cliche.  I am, of course, aware that there's life here that just doesn't rely on sunlight (i.e. deep ocean hydrothermal vents - I was a big fan of Alvin for a while), or that could get by with somewhat less sunlight.

I also said "theoretically" which doesn't imply that it's probable or easy.  Just possible in some extreme case.  Like the Siberian Traps - I think they could count as a supervolcano.

Calling me, essentially, an ignoramus was an unwarranted personal attack.

The thing is, in cases where I've managed to produce a lot of wealth very quickly (finding gold and magma in the initial digging with a skilled metalcrafter handy being a common cause) I have gotten migrants in the first summer, before a caravan ever showed up.  While the caravan clearly has a very strong influence on migration, it doesn't seem to have 100% control over it.

If you embark on a town or goblin tower, the architecture wealth often attracts immigrants during the first summer.

Supervolcano? Oh, you mean a caldera. Or in Yellowstone's case multi-caldera. Whats that, due to kill 80%+ of all life. Highly unlikely.

Agreed, a caldera would make an awsome DF embark location, it probably wont be erupting for at least another century, science is often wrong.

I was just using the term ("supervolcano") used in the article.

The great thing about science is that it's usually wrong about something several times before it's right (and has the grace to admit when that happens).  I realize we're highly unlikely to see such an event, but that's beside the point and only because of the difference between geological and human timescales.  Kind of like meteor strikes, though, it's not a question of "if" but "when" another eruption like this happens.

It's called the "crust" for a reason. if we make it about 4 feet thick that should do.

This is okay if we get dwarves to build it.  Dwarven walls are well-know to be indestructible.

Someone on digg also pointed that out, but they didn't have a source, either, or I would have mentioned it in my original post.
