DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Entrance Designs
« on: December 10, 2009, 02:21:44 am »
It's not a design you can take much from in the way of specifics, but maybe it will give you inspiration.  This is the entrance to my 100 dwarf fortress, Heavenslabor the Blister of Onslaught.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The caravan entrance is 3 wide and the drawbridges force them to come from a particular place.  The secondary entrances on each side of the caravan entrance allow sieges to path into my fortress, so I can trap/kill them.

The small towers are aesthetic.  When I want to place marksdwarves, they g on the low platforms.

The trade depot lives under the central marksdwarf platform.

The caravan path is 3 wide; the goblin paths are 2 wide and full of cage traps.

I don't think it's strange.  In my current fortress I smashed into the glowing pit shaft by accident as I was digging a TC farm - about half a dozen z levels below the rooms and several z-levels above the sand desert floor.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Fixed.

I just got my first artifact thong.  It's probably my first because I've never bothered with a cloth industry before.  This map has an undergound river right next to my fortress, though, so cave spider silk is easy.  Thus, weavers and clothiers.

It's pretty hardcore.

Samamtalin, "Couragedrums", a giant cave spider silk thong.

It is incrusted with star sapphires and encircled with bands of emerald.  The GCS cloth is midnight blue with dimple dye.  It's adorned with hanging rings of GCS silk.  It menaces with spikes of GCS silk, raw adamantine, emerald, AND admantine.  On the item is an image of a wave in emerald.  On the item is an image of Alders in emerald.

Yes, that's right.  Spikes of GCS silk, Raw Adamantine, emerald, AND adamantine.

Value: 1,000,200☼

What.  The.  Hell.

I forbade the damned thing.  No one will wear this.  Or touch it.  In fact, looking at it is now punishable by death.

I'll make you one of whatever color you like, bearded or not bearded.

I just sent you a message concerning this.  My request is pretty specific and I understand if you don't want to do it.

What happens if you burn wooden weapons/armor from dear elves with magma? Does it become ash, once magma is drained?

I'm pretty sure it just disappears.

First, if you don't have a meeting area, they're probably just following their squad leader as he wanders to a spot he likes.  If they do that when they're off duty, instead of sparring, it could be because the squad leader has a nervous injury.  My invalid squad has a habit of doing that.

My apologies, Whitney.  Your name is itself androgynous, maybe it should be adopted as the androgynous Internet pronoun.

I think you should have left it unedited.

Edit - This wasn't a serious suggestion.  As you might have surmised from my initial response, I'm often not serious.  After I posted I thought it might be offensive, though.

As a side note, I just tend to assume "he" on these forums.  I don't know many girls that play DF.  My girlfriend (a programmer!) won't touch it.  To be fair, though, one of the people that started me on the game was a girl.

Welcome New Messages.  Welcome to the learning cliff.  It's so much Fun.

If your dwarves won't do what you order done, make sure you have the corresponding labor turned on for at least one dwarf.  To get to the labor screen, select a dwarf with the [v] key, press [p], then [l] (lower case L).  If you want someone to dig, make sure they have mining turned on (and they have access to a pick!).  The wiki has listings for every profession and the associated labor (not all of them are obvious).

On the wiki you'll also find articles that tell you how to start your first fortress.  Don't worry if they come off as a walkthrough - there's no way to really write a walkthrough for this game.  It's too open.  And trust me, You'll either lose or abandon your first fortress.  Either way, when you start a new one you'll quickly realize how much you learned about fortress design and efficiency when you begin digging your second (and third, fourth, and fifth).

I used this article to get started.  It was just informative enough to avoid feeling like a walkthrough, but it helped me make good initial decisions.

I don't think I can help you because I never used tilesets, so I'm having a hard time seeing exactly what's what.  However, try reading this page of the wiki.

Make sure your haven't forbidden the stone from which you made archery targets.

You, uh, did make some archery targets, yes?

To expand on CaptainNitpick: They will use only wood or bone bolts for target practice - which is incredibly annoying when you could make 50,000 copper bolts but can't spare the wood (like on a tree-less map) and don't have enough bone.

For now, I think you just have to get used to how excited your dwarves get over striking microcline.

He won't try and mandate pig iron barrels, will he?

I've never had a noble mandate a particular item out of a material that it can't be made from.  If they want something bismuth or pig iron, I've always just seen "pig iron items (x/x)."

That's just personal experience, though.

What are the benefits to playing multiple fortresses in the same world gen besides the ability to reclaim fortresses later and to be able to visit them in adventure mode?

Right now, I'm not sure I can think of anything mechanical.  I think you can get engravings in new fortresses of your old exploits.

This is a feature that will become more fun the longer you play.  It means that losing isn't losing.

I try to think of this game not as a world generator, but as a story generator, to paraphrase something I saw posted on this forum.

Edit: As the game develops, I think there'll be more and more incentive to use the same world.

Thanks so much.  I thought I tried that, but I must have botched my attempt.

I guess what I'm wanting to ask is whether the lake edge-tiles will eat water like normal edge tiles, since they're also water sources?

I don't know the answer to that, but I'll second your question.

@Skorpion

I've been looking at a magma channel for several days that I build early on in my fortress and wondering how I was going to get down there to place a floodgate.  (I want to empty it - for reasons.)  I can't believe I didn't think of just dropping a bit of water in there.  I was coming up with schemes of using multiple pumps to empty out enough room for the floodgate, but that seemed awfully dangerous to do with magma, and the amount of construction required would have been silly.

Thank you.  Thank you.
