I just realised, there's no limit on the starting spell ... can you limit the rarity of the starting spell?
It may be nice, since I am kind of confused...The "leveling" system for our characters could be based on the Cards Rarity. So that when we had "Uncommon level" we could have a better chance of using "common" type and severe penalties for trying something above our league.
i see what you edited there, however, if you want to talk raw power, consider the following:

somebody else: "that city harbors the villain!"
You cast this and ask: "What city?"

This region-locking thing kinda pisses me off. As a Brit, I'm always stuck on EU servers where 70%+ of the people are non-English speakers.

I have nothing against non-English speakers, but I want to play with English speakers. People locked into US servers don't understand how annoying this can be.
for the beta at least you're not locked in on EU servers.  In the FAQ arenanet released they mentioned being able to move from NA to EU.

Started downloading yesterday, this morning it was at 55% - 15GB are a lot.

Are you using Technic 7? currently at work and can't watch youtube. If so, you might consider also adding adventure items and battle towers from the yogbox, as they are 1:1 compatible, come preconfigured with the mod items (yogbox config for thaumcraft items) and give you something to do once you complete your other endeavors without causing too much overhead (i am looking at you millenair).

You want to be really fucking careful when playing around with taint in the nether.
You CANNOT use purity potions to revert tainted netherrack. I haven't tested dawn totems, but I'm presuming it has the same (non)effect.
So do some research in the nether, but don't be surprised if you have to bail from your netherlab if you fuck up too much.
move away through the nether, not research in the nether. it has the added benefit that it unloads the chunks without having to leave the game.

also: boots of striding + ice = fun. It has the same effect as betapigs with saddles had on ice for some reason.

I could have sworn that someone in this thread said I could use the duplicator on my dawn totems.  They'd be liars if they actually existed, which apparently they don't and I was just making things up.

My home has a four-tile-wide perimeter of cobblestone/stone blocks along the sides where the taint is approaching.  I'm hoping it will be enough.  Otherwise...it's time for an exodus through the Nether, a frantic scramble to evacuate my chests and equipment.

Don't forget to close nearby caves and cut down trees that overhang the border.

your next step should be to create vis condensers and research the concentrated darkness. then collect the taint in the area in them. might i advise you to move away from your home while researching - a hundred blocks in the nether - away from the taint - should suffice. After all you don't want the taint to surround your island of purity. :P

I just now tried technic 7.0.0 - I generated a new world and was staring at a cliff. I looked up. The cliff extended at least 50 blocks. I proceeded to look around me - i was apparently in a swamp biome containing one rubber and one normal swamp tree less than 5 blocks away. In addition i was surrounded by cliffs on three sides, none further away than 20 blocks. I looked up again - there were trees on top of the cliffs. Jungle trees, stretching far above the 128 blocks mark. Since minecraft was lagging a lot at that point i closed and took a  look at the mods folder.
The new technic pack contains wedge.
I immediately increased the ram allocation to 2Gb and started to explore that awesome place. Just out around the corner i found the perfect place to build my base:

 - before i started i added battletowers, adventure items and better dungeons, i wonder if they will work...
 - seed is "modpocalypse" - don't know how wedge generates worlds, you might get something different.

If you want some more buildingblocks try inficraft, - the one mentioned in this thread by Naxza a few days ago.
The Orizon part adds a lot more stone types to the game. It seems to me as if it was inspired by DF. It will also make minecarts with chests more usefull. I have no idea if it plays nicely with most of your major mods, though. No microcline yet, either. :P

We might want to work on an atmospheric water collector to make us independant from the nearest water source.
Is there morning fog?

otherwise we might want to use the salt to create brine and construct a solar water facility:reflect sunlight to heat brine,  collect water vapour, receive water. - an oversated brine solution will collect air humidity.


Look/ask for maps of the surrounding area, there might be other lootable places nearby, nuclear shelters in abandoned cities might contain additional workforce. There has always (twice) been interest in nuclear shelters when threats arose, which should increase our chance to find one or two in abandoned pre war settlements. The unlooted ones would be tightly sealed.
If we can obtain aluminum dust and bake it with rust we can make a crude termite. We only need a signal torch to light it and burn through the shelter doors.

Also: defenses in mine form might be useful. tell the traders you have those plans, though and plot a save path for them first.
