General Discussion / Re: Things that made you sad today thread.

Powerful words, as we move from the era where we understood the world through spirituality, and continue progressing toward understanding before explaining. In recent years, people have moved away from this same spirituality, and come to question the importance of morality without the pressures once imposed by spiritual rewards and punnishments.

I think that we sense this void of morality, innately, and that is what drive the religious into dogmatic fervor, decrying the wrongs of the modern era, and fighting them with all their heart.

I fear a great many people don't grasp the vital importance of morality to society... and if we lack a higher authority to govern it, then morality becomes something we must choose to adopt, without desire for reward, or fear of punnishment. It's frightening for us to trust others like that. People will inevitably exploit this, as they have.

What would come of us then, if we forsook religion and mysticism entirely? Could we have the society and world we not have without dogma? If our culture lacks a supernatural enforcer who holds people accountable, can people hold themselves to high enough standards of morality that our society can persist and continue to rise, or will the order and world we've built disintigrate along with it?

That is where I fear humanity is heading. The next few centuries will be the most trying test of human integrity and evolution yet.

Morality can exist without religion and in fact is very likely to exist unless the whole world gets some kind of psychotic disease. You are more likely to be held to high standards by your peers than an invisible force (even though god is a good excuse for them to yell at you). Morality does in fact change over time, we used to be very strict morally and we will be again, but there will be many many differant cultural movements and ideals until that happens. For example only a few hundered years ago (or less...) it was perfectly acceptable to marry a 13 year old. IMO the world is just very reactionary to whatever the current trends happen to be.

Edit: By the way, spartans practiced eugenics and they turned out okay. I think it's absolutely horrible, but they seemed to beleive it was the right thing to do.

Shia LeBeouf Promises Better "Transformers Movie" Next Time

Are they finally taking him out of the movie?

Honestly, the humans only reason for being there is to allow people to relate to the characters better, but are they even necessary (they suck at that job anyway)? Make the transformers look more human instad of tumbling piles of scrap metal and then give them some fucking plot. In fact, a cheesy cartoon plot would be perfect and people would care alot less about the obviously glaring plot holes; maybe they have to save megan fox from megatron or something (hey... shes hot). Also, robots don't need testicles...

"we built thousands of nukes...we may as well use them"

I declare WAR on the moon. It's always staring at us with those crazy moon eyes.

a .rar file is alot like a .zip file. You will need something like winrar to extract it.

I thought gamestop would be opposed to this since they make alot of their money from reselling games. What hellish deal went down to get their support? I know that most places make hilariously low profit margins from new games.

I thought bioware just made games about jabbering to your teammates. I suppose they do have a few roles in most of their games, but it's usually self-sacrificing heroes or retarded assholes.

Rpgs need to be called storytelling games. Also I always figured that the stat growth was pimarily there to give a feeling of progression as you move through the story, but some games (FF) do take the stat elements to some extremes.

Wow really add there, but w/e

Shouldn't it be called "More things to do with your manly beard of manliness!"

The controls are pretty Japanese. I remember playing old FF games and they always wanted to use the right button as confirm instead of the bottom button. It probably got ported over here that way and they never bothered to change it because the vets like it that way. You get used to it pretty fast though and it stops feeling clunky altogether after a while.

Culture is weird. Why would it matter if they can't decide for themselves if they aren't upset that they can't? The only reason it matters is because we believe differently.

That said, Iran should only be on a woman's rights committee if it's an anti-woman's rights committee. What do they possibly hope to gain from this?

I always think an apocalypse (where I live of course) would be interesting, or maybe just surviving a major hurricane or something. Although a simple crises for a week or so might be best, because life sucks without meds/computers.

Obviously I don't actually wish for any real disaster to happen.

Also, the apocalyptic effects of global warming seem way overblown. Worst case scenario is we lose a lot of major cities and have to move farther inland. Probably some rioting/looting too and economic problems. Seems inevitable though considering that even Al Gore won't give up his hamburgers.

Piracy is bad and you know it. People will do it. Very few sales are lost, so no reason to mess with it anyway.

They probably spend more money on buying/making complicated DRM then they make in extra sales.

Although if I've lost a disc or need a crack it's nice to know that there are some options out there.

Heh, I kinda got banned from a small EvE alliance.

I argued with the alliance leader over his religion (I swear I didn't mean to insult him, but the universe couldn't have been created 1000 years ago...) and he edited the vent logs to make it look like I was a spy from another alliance. I was then blown up and thrown out, with all my stuff locked inside 0.0 space.

Luckily the guy tried to join goon swarm shortly after. He paid them billions of isk to join and was promptly blown up and laughed at by both them and his old alliance.

Good times.

People use macs?

Ahem, that's great news for people who use mac.
I'm considering getting a mac for my mom... she is pretty technologically challenged. OSX is pretty and doesn't let you break anything unless you really really know what your doing as far as I could tell (DELETE SYSTEM 32 ITS WORTHLESS AND TAKES UP ALL YOUR SPACE).

Just be happy for the mac users and take joy in the fact that you get free portal because of them.

Mac fans rejoice, you can now spend money instantly on awesome deals without using wine. Unfortunately everyone on *nix (like me) still has to hack through it.

Also, free portal giveaway until may 24. Awesome game, fun little physics puzzle game with cake, but everyone probably already knows. I'm just gonna add it to my steam collection =D
