DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma helpz0r!
« on: August 25, 2010, 04:58:38 am »
Consider that a pump can only pump magma as fast as it "diffuses" in from a nearby square.  At some point the "surface area" (amount of 1/7 squares around the edges) of your magma blob becomes large enough that it evaporates faster then the pump can pump it.  Wall off some sections so you can fill them one at a time, or add more pumps.  In particular close off those big "rooms" and fill them one by one.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Peace
« on: August 20, 2010, 12:04:03 am »
There is some sort of treaty signing mechanic, just kill enough of them and they will get sick of it and send a diplomat to ask to be friends.  I don't think goblins will make peace, although if you kill their leaders it makes them attack less, at least for a while.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What do you do when you find Adamantium?
« on: August 19, 2010, 05:53:39 pm »
I try and wait for legendary weapon/armor smiths before doing any Admantine work, although I harvest it and make some wafers as soon as I can.  Sooner or later a master immigrant will show up or someone will get a mood.  You can cheese the mood system if you want also, by having haulers and farmers make a single piece of armor/weapon.

Also I'm pretty sure that even dabbling miners can't destroy any admantine.  If you could pound it into dust with a copper pick it wouldn't be all that useful to begin with...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How does armor system work?
« on: August 19, 2010, 05:48:52 pm »
Some of the goals behind the new armor system is that armor should absorb some of the energy of an attack even if the weapon penetrates it and that muscle and bone and stuff should work in a similar way.  Its not entirely clear whether or not it actually does work like that, but it does seem like having metal armor of any sort means more bruises and cuts and far less limb severs and instant death strikes.  Keep in mind that bone and fat and muscle have pretty sorry material properties though.  It doesn't take much leftover energy to mess up whatever is under the armor.

Causing unconsciousness through a nearby cavein might fix it.

Yea it was mentioned somewhere that there would be big multi tile trees with elf buildings on/in them, although it wasn't really clear exactly how that would all work.  I sortof imagine an ewok village, but with everything grown out of living wood.

plants photosythesize using the light from glowing mushrooms, mushrooms feed on decaying plant matter.  The animals feed mostly on poorly equipped militia dwarfs and scout cats.

I don't know why weapon skill increases, but it does!

Maybe they can parry them with their swords, causing skill gain?

If mechanisms affect accuracy wouldn't it be best to use masterwork, since the goal is to maximize spear hits while minimizing the damage each one does?

Also, does being stabbed at with spears cause job cancelations or anything?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Best Military Training Strategy
« on: August 10, 2010, 05:02:49 am »
I feel like my next fortress is going to be completely covered in training spears on repeat and everyone is going to walk around with a shield... That might be a good way to set up a fortress wide militia.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Ownership & Economics, or Fun With Money
« on: August 08, 2010, 04:44:10 am »
I cant wait until the economy gets an overhaul.  The idea of tinkering with interest rates and currency circulation and monetary policy makes me a very happy blood god.

I understand why some people would hate it passionately though.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Mood troubles
« on: August 07, 2010, 07:05:02 am »
A moody dwarf goes and gets things in the order they appear when you look at the workshop.  If a dorf "must have wood, cloth, leather and gems, and you don't have any leather, the wood and cloth will be brought to the workshop but the gems wont be until Urist tracks down some leather.  So check whats already been brought to the workshop and you should be able to figure out where the holdup is.  My guess is its the gems, mine out every visible cluster and try to have at least 1 cut and 1 uncut gem of each flavor.

I wonder if its because a shield counts as a blunt weapon which is good vs armored opponents?
