DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Starting Military question
« on: March 11, 2010, 12:41:40 am »
1) There are no brain injuries, only volunteers for the marksdwarf division.  Also, I forgot to mention to make bone helms also, to reduce the number of marksdwarf recruits.

2) Do not use no quality sparring weapons.  Quality increases effective user skill, user skill decreases the odds of injury (in my experience, as well as others's).  Try it for yourself though, I could be wrong.

Good idea

[COMMON_DOMESTIC][PACK_ANIMAL][trADE_CAPACITY:1500]

or

[COMMON_DOMESTIC][WAGON_PULLER]

might work, not sure what happens if you make it pack and a wagon puller at the same time.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Finding Underground Lake and Chasm.

Well if the chasm stretches off your map it should be easy enough to dig a tunnel on the lowest Z level along the edge of the map around where you think it is.  If its entirely on your map you can just run a grid of exploratory tunnels through the middle of each embark tile (which are 48x48), and I don't think it would have room to hide (could be possible but I doubt it).

You could try and mod it to be milkable.  Depending on what you imagine Mog Juice to be. :D

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Resuming History After Worldgen?
« on: March 10, 2010, 06:02:11 am »
I do think some amount of time passes between forts so that when you break your monarch the next fortress can still get a new one.  I know a year or two passes between ending worldgen and embarking, but I never really recycle my used worlds so I'm not sure about abandoning.

Mod their frequency up to 100.  I don't think their population count will respond to your changes but its worth a shot, just add some zeros to it.  Other then that, let up on the elf genocide for a while and see if they show up with one.

Be sure to clear your data/objects out etc etc.

Ive found that adding [NOPAIN] helps massively. Since they aren't born with any toughness stats Megabeasts have a tendancy to get a leg broken and then fall unconscious, usually resulting in death.

You can still do pretty much anything with magma, you just have to control it with pumps.  Remember, walls and floors will not melt from magma, and buildings won't melt unless they are in the same square as some quantity of magma ( wooden buildings will sometimes catch fire from nearby magma, I think )

DF General Discussion / Re: Na'Vi and Humans are Elves vs Dwarves

Doesn't explain how a pre-industrial society of intelligent beings can hope to escape a Malthusian catastrophe.

Surely you jest, it's more like 4000 years.  Faster if we didn't have the various Dark Ages. (and equivalents in non-european areas)

(and protection from when humans manage to colonize the star system and some extremist group borrows a tugboat >.>)

Well yea, I guess they never did seem to get sick, but their lifestyle does seem prone to injury.  I would assume they avoid malthusian catastrophe by starving and fighting when populations overshoot available food resources.  Or else they just make less babies to keep population constant, which seems exactly like the sort of biological technology that they would be given to make all the horrible parts of traditional lifestyles disappear  :-X

Humans have been extracting and using copper for at least 10,000 years and non-sedintary agriculture probly started before that.  The aliens have better stuff then copper, clearly, but the knowledge of how to extract it and work it is still something they would need along the way to whatever their industrial level society would look like.  And yea they probly will want an industrial civilization someday, if only to protect the traditional lifestyle they prefer.  Its not reasonable to assume that benevolent humans would even be able to protect them if a couple of space conquistadors decided to drop the hammer of physics on them for whatever reason.  Somehow I don't see people parking a UN Space Fleet there for all eternity to keep the curious or greedy from messing with the place.

See, I think alot of people are missing the point. The Navi do not need space faring technology, they don't need computers, they don't need industrialization.

We don't need that technology either.  Oh wait 7 billion people live on this planet vs half a billion (max) throughout the rest of history, so 93% of us apparently do need it to live.

They never show the parts where half of all the little blue children die before the age of 5 due to disease and starvation.  Also, they never show the parts where the Navi societies kill each other over resources, yet they must in order to have warriors and warrior legends.

Also, if you can upload someones mind into the synthetic brain of an alien, you can definitely do some crazy immortality stuff that the movie doesn't show.  How else would they bring back that angry Marine guy for the sequel (I heard they are).  Plus growing alien bodies in tanks in the first place takes some pretty solid medical tech that the Navi wish they had every time someone gets sick or injured.  If I was making the sequel the 2 main character's children would have some painful chronic disease that the humies could treat with a pill and everyone would be like "darn I wish those humies were still here so we could trade them useless shiney rocks for it".

Just get inside quickly and be prepared to sit out the first siege.  Also, try and request Mithril nuggets or blackmetal from the caravan.  Your going to want as much of that stuff as you can find, especially when Urist goes and uses 3 bars of the stuff on some stupid artifact ring.

"How did you fit a Full Plate Mail's worth of Mithril on a 10r ring?  Where did it all go?  Does the ring rule other rings?  Does it do anything?"

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Homicidal Liaison?
« on: March 09, 2010, 03:13:02 am »
Very odd.  Is/was your liason also a soldier of some sort?  The soldiers seem set to kill by default, but my Liasons always run away from everything.  Like seriously that Hippo has one lung and no eyes, just run by it and get out of here before the orcs catch you!  True story.

I buy military skills for 2 of my starting dwarves and make 2 leather armors and 2 wooden shields soon after embark.  They start sparring as soon as I have room for an armor stand.

lol wow.  Is she trying and failing to load them into a backpack?  In any case I guess it depends how many plump helmet roasts you have vs how many champions.

Well magma, prisoners, carp, dead nobles and tantrum spirals are 90% of the forums because everyone encounters them sooner or later and wants to post their own thread.

This is your DF meme thread.  There are many like it but this one is yours.
