DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Surface mining Fortress project
« on: April 12, 2011, 10:51:34 pm »
Has anybody actually tried this?

For the disengaged, surface mining is where you carve away an entire layer of rock instead of mining shafts and tunnels. I'm thinking about doing it in my current fortress. Why?

DF General Discussion / I'm done playing Dwarf Fortress (for the moment)
« on: November 01, 2010, 11:58:18 pm »
I know, it's blasphemy, right?

Well, an issue happened earlier today where Dwarf Fortress crashed and something in the folder caused my entire computer to go haywire and completely disconnect my E drive (where everything important to me lies). I was unable to get my computer back to normal working order for nearly 9 hours today (I just got back online), and I felt like I was going to have a heart attack because I thought my hard drive was dying. Now that I deleted the folder, everything is back in working order (coincidence?), but I don't think I want to revisit Dwarf Fortress and risk this again. Not until I have a backup of all my important documents safely tucked away in a brand new external hard drive.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Uhh... was I supposed to remove that?
« on: October 18, 2010, 12:18:21 am »
It starts off as a common pest problem. Kobold is caught sneaking in the fortress, soldier is sent to kill said Kobold. However, in the aftermath, I found a very strange item on top of the castle wall.

guts.

I checked the combat log. Apparently, the speardwarf who was sent to kill the Kobold somehow sliced off the guts when they popped out of the kobolds body. The Kobold became very sick, but didn't die for several more turns when the Speardwarf finally decapitated them.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / After you scrub all the floors in Uristrule...
« on: October 15, 2010, 09:22:44 pm »
After a while, the gore buildup on the walls and floors would make even Eli Roth squick.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I should mention that all the walls and floors are made out of rock salt. The Fortress entrance has seen the deaths of 200 enemy combatants, including trolls and giant rats. Currently the only way to clean it up is to just replace the architecture, but who'd want to do that?

While mining in my new fortress, I came across a large pit deep underground that descends 16 Z levels to the next series of caverns. I planned to make a staircase going down the chasm and a checkpoint before the staircase. While mining out a path, I assigned a bunch of my masons to construct the floors around the checkpoint and the path to the soon-to-be-made staircase. I accidentally cut down one of the stalactites hanging above the chasm, and it created a 'cave-in'. The stalactite was only one square big, but the vacuum it created sucked down a bunch of dwarves with it, most of whom were OVER 20 SQUARES AWAY, AND AROUND A CORNER! There were no survivors.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Do dwarves prefer targeting certain body parts?
« on: September 05, 2010, 12:29:37 am »
This has occurred too many times for me to consider it a coincidence. In my previous fort BloodTerror, my unofficial champion dwarf loved to disarm her enemies, literally. About 80% of the time, the limbs she would attack first would be the hands, which probably accounts for how she was able to win so many wars.

My new fort's soldier seems to like aiming for the legs. The first limbs to go on nearly any animal or gob are the legs. I'm seeing a pattern here unfold that looks to be more than a coincidence.

DF Suggestions / Building: Mass graves!
« on: September 01, 2010, 11:56:22 am »
Since one of the huge issues right now is the non-degradable remains of creatures, I hereby suggest that one of the buildings you can build is a mass grave, a place to bury the corpses of your enemies, Titans, Forgotten Beasts, and the occasional noble. Now I know you could essentially make a garbage dump do the same thing, but in the mass grave, you could see all the unfortunate bastards who decided to screw with you in its own menu. Just a thought. Just a playful thought.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / WHAT THE HELL?! (Siege Spoilers)
« on: July 07, 2010, 12:29:07 pm »
I knew the enemy could now use mounts. My previous sieges only had the goblin leader riding a mount.

I must have pissed them off something fierce. Now they're ALL riding a mount!

The forces are as follows:

15 Lashers
1 Hammerlord (leader)
15 Bowgobs
2 Blowgunners (leaders)
15 Speargobs
1 Troll Fishery Worker (what)
1 Troll Miner
1 Troll Carpenter
1 Troll Wood Burner
1 Troll Bone Carver
1 Troll Fishery Dissector
4 Giant Toads
5 Elk Birds
9 Giant Rats
4 Giant Cave Swallows
6 Giant Bats
7 Jabberers
5 Giant Olms
4 Cave Crocodiles
2 Voracious Cave Crawlers
2 Trolls

Total = 102!

My forces are:

9 Hammerdwarves
9 Swordsdwarves

They all wear full iron armor and the swordsdwarves use bucklers.

Woah, just as I was about to post, another Forgotten Beast has appeared. It's a giant Antelope with four horns and a large bloated body.

Clusterfuck, thy name is Lost!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The fall of the Goblin Civilization
« on: July 06, 2010, 06:06:30 pm »
After several years passed without any sieges, ambushes, or thievery, I checked their civilization status.

They got a law giver. They're fucked.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Curse of Slade: Draconian Dwarves
« on: July 05, 2010, 11:07:03 pm »
Well, I have a noble who mandates Slade. The person who suffered the punishment was my legendary Armorsmith, 76 days in the slammer. Well, during their imprisonment, no one brought them food or water. Don't know why, there's plenty of available water at the well, and there's enough food to feed the fortress for 20 years, if I were to stop all food production right now.

When they got to dehydration level, I deconstructed their prison so they could go feed themselves, after it was certain no one else would. As they were getting themselves food and water, one of my soldiers came up to them and cut off their legs and broke their arms and skull with their sword. Apparently punishment for not filling out the last 25 days of the sentence. Now my dwarf is lying in a hospital bed subjected to a healthcare system shittier than our own (We have all the resources and skill you could want, but no one is doing the work), bleeding to death and dying from dehydration.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Uhhh, where is the caravan?
« on: July 04, 2010, 03:14:03 pm »
I've waited 2 years now for my mountain home to come bearing their trades and their liaison and their small armies of drunks. They haven't arrived. Everyone else has arrived (Including the elves who seem to want wood now just so they have a reason to be pissed off), but not the dwarves. As a matter of fact, the Gobs haven't been appearing either to shove my fortress into the magma sea. What the hell?! I've been waiting for some army to come and wreck shit and destroy my fortress. THe Elves seem to be pacifist (even when half their merchants were killed one season during a goblin ambush, back when I actually got them), the Humans are the only way I can export things right now what with the dwarves being MIA. And now there's no way I can dig into Hell despite there being 4 entrances (Pathfinding issues).

Wait, I just thought of something. Could the lack of dwarven caravans be a result of having my population at its cap? Can this, too, be a bug?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / (SPOILER) Can't dig into the Shinies
« on: July 03, 2010, 11:14:10 pm »
I can scrape the surface of the Adamantine for the first few floors, but once I hit the magma seas and where the tubes become narrow, the dwarves forget how to dig. Like, entirely. There' smore than enough room to have a staircase without flooding the floor with magma, but they don't seem to realize that. They refuse to dig any deeper.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Fish don't exist?
« on: April 19, 2010, 11:57:07 pm »
This is probably my 5th embarked fortress. Because I need shells to supply moods, I keep trying to fish (the dwarves don't always bring fish for me), but I get bombarded with messages about how there are no fish to catch.

What the hell? Where are all the fish? I've embarked near a lake, a major river, a brook, and the ocean, and none of them had fish aside from the large creatures (carp, whales).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Birthing Easter Egg
« on: April 02, 2010, 12:11:31 pm »
The first child was born in my fortress today, and when I checked her stats, it said this.

"She was born today, which makes her very young indeed."
