DF Bug Reports / [40d] Horses are Hippos
« on: March 18, 2010, 08:38:28 pm »
In my fortress, I caught a bunch of hippos for reproduction, but they never reproduced. When I started having too many animals, I killed the hippos. Right afterwards, Horse birth prompts stopped and were replaced by hippo birth prompts, even though I killed all the hippos that I had.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The most awesome siege
« on: March 14, 2010, 11:29:48 pm »
I hit the tri-fecta of fun. when a Human Caravan showed up, I entered another siege *3rd one in a year!!!* against the Gobs. 70 gobs stormed the entrance at the same time, where the human caravan lay in wait. What happened next was so fun, fun does not begin to describe it.

The entire human force mobilized at once and assaulted the goblin siege head on. My own dwarves joined in the fight shortly afterwards. Within less than a minute, the entire entrance was covered with blood, vomit, body parts, corpses, dropped equipment, and all three races scuffling and brawling in one of the largest siege fights I've ever seen. The gobs suffered 50+ casualties, the humans 2, but no dwarf was critically injured.

To add insult to injury, the last gob squad to stay around got attacked by my military leader, who entered a martial trance (the dwarven Bankai) right as he entered the midst of them, and killed almost all of them before I called him off when he grew tired. The last remains of their forces are now crawling slowly out of my fortress region.

Who else here has an awesome siege story to tell?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Goblin mentality

Spring 319 at Zushtasharkoth

*8 Gobs ambush Urist McChopwood*

An ambush! Curse them!

Urist McChopwood: HOLY SHIT!

Urist McChopwood cancels fell tree: Interrupted by Goblin Lasher

Gob 1: DWAAAAAAARRRRRFFF!!!!

*Urist McChopwood runs back into the fortress, the Goblin ambush tailing him closely. The instant they enter the dark cavern, suddenly Gob 1 gets eviscerated and gibbed by a weapon trap filled with 10 green glass giant axes.*

Gob 2: What the hell was that?!

Gob 3: I have no idea. Tread carefully!

*Gobs 4 and 6 slowly step into the entrance as well, only to meet a similar fate.*

Gob 2: Uhhh... I don't think this is such a good idea. Maybe we should cut our losses and flee?

*Urist Mcgatherstuff suddenly appears in the entrance to gather the dropped equipment*

Gob 8: Good idea. Let's - *Sees the dwarf* DWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Urist Mcgatherstuff: SHIT!

Urist Mcgatherstuff cancels Store Item in stockpile: Interrupted by Goblin Swordsman

Gob 2: DWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRF!!!!

Gob 3: DWAAAAAAAAAAAAAARF!!!

The last 5 goblin ambushers run into the entrance and are all annihilated by the weapon traps.

I've watched them, and I've counted the dates. 1 week. 2 weeks. 10 weeks. Some dwarves take an eternity to take a simple drink, it's amazing anything ever gets done in the fortress. I've seen a dwarf chomp down a lavish meal and be back in his workshop before the tax collector knows someone ate at his table, but when it comes to taking a drink, they might as well have a debilitating injury.

General Discussion / Scheduled overheat spikes on the video card?
« on: March 10, 2010, 10:13:13 pm »
As 20 people on this site would know, I had heat problems at the beginning of last month. I was able to fix it a few weeks ago, and I thought everything went back to normal. However, this has not been the case. An even stranger occurrence has reared its ugly head.

Several times I noticed sudden heat spikes in my computer, which normally averages around 168 F when idle and up to 200 F if it's super busy. However, at least once every day, there has been a sudden heat spike where it suddenly goes up to 250 F. THe past few days, however, I noticed that there was a pattern at when the heat spikes occur. I noticed this just now when I realized that the time was the exact same as the previous nights, and I backed this up with message histories that I had with my friends online. Is it possible that there is a virus or something that is scheduling these heat spikes?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Burn the World
« on: March 07, 2010, 03:59:54 pm »
In my current fortress, a Fire Imp killed a cat, which led to everyone gathering the non-lit cat. During the incident, the Fire Imp appeared again and killed another cat, this time igniting it first and setting fire to the forest. My Captain killed the Imp and then the cat was left in the pyre. I anticipated what would happen next, so I told all my dwarves to stay indoors while the rest of the world burned, I even told them to not gather any refuse at all and forbid everything on fire. This did not happen, however.

About 10 dwarves in my fortress ran into the fire and sat there after grabbing the burning cat chunks. They caught fire and left back to the fortress to my meeting area where  I placed 4 wells (Built because of the extreme log jam that occurred when every dwarf wanted a drink at one time), and they dropped the cat chunks for all to see Now I'm watching as all the dwarves catch fire and die from smoke inhalation. And now there's an ambush, and all the surviving dwarves ran out to go give them a hug.

Why do they ignore water entirely, and why did they ignore all orders to stay indoors and not gather the refuse? This is the exact same thing that led to the deaths of one of my previous fortresses, except that one was to the hands of a Giant.

DF General Discussion / Al-Qaeda's fortress has been abandoned
« on: March 04, 2010, 11:18:31 am »
One of the caves Al-Qaeda was holed up in was abandoned and Pakistani soldiers reclaimed it recently. ABC had a report on it, and took a brief tour of the caves.

Who else can't watch this and not think that maybe someone in Al-Qaeda didn't play Dwarf Fortress?

Urist McTerrorist has been quite content lately. He has slept on the ground recently. He ate a fine meal lately. He had a satisfying sparring session recently.

You have struck.... something. This, by the way, is only a stone's throw away from MAGMA and quite possibly an army of fire imps ready to tear shit up once they find the exit.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The fey mood waits for no one.
« on: February 16, 2010, 12:31:51 am »
I didn't think injured dwarves could even get a fey mood. Tell that to my craftsdwarf, who received nasty nervous injuries and several serious injuries from hippos and is now crawling all around the fortress between blackouts trying to collect materials for the unknown artifact.

DF General Discussion / New dwarven thoughts
« on: February 11, 2010, 12:32:07 am »
Going over the new updates, it makes me wonder what kind of new thoughts are going to exist in the game now. Will dwarves get unhappy thoughts from watching a particularly queasy operation in the new healthcare system? Will they get happy thoughts for watching Gobs get slaughtered in the arena?

List the new thoughts you think will be in the next update.

DF Community Games & Stories / Zushtasharkoth (Solo game)

Zushtasharkoth, The Ancient Prophecy

Spring, Year 315

With the advancement of Basementcraze, we at The Long Nets have been inspired to set out and make our mark on the world as well. Maybe I should introduce myself first. I am Cog Zasudil, leader of The Long Nets and citizen of The Clasp of Onslaught. I have led 6 of my most promising protégés out here to erect a great Fortress.
After months of travel, we arrived here, at the handpicked region for the future Zustasharkoth, The Ancient Prophecy. The day before settling down, we made a survey of the landscape. To our direct West there is a river, bustling with carp and milkfish. My team was happy to find a healthy river, but I had to pull them away from the edge when I noticed both up and downstream, there were herds of hippos. I’ve heard horror stories back home at The Clasp of Onslaught about the wrath these seemingly gentle creatures have brought on any creature that ventures too close to the water. I would not want to see my team cut down in their prime so early. If it will please them, I will map out a site for a swimming pool in the fortress, safe from the dangers of the river.
The elves told us that this is a blessed biome, where Sun Berries can be grown, a legend among dwarves. It is the catalyst for Sunshine, the greatest beer known to dwarf, but only a few dwarves ever get to drink it, much less grow it. If we can get our hands on Sun Berries, our fortress will become legend, and we, too, can sample the ambrosia of Armok.
When we arrived, I noticed fine grains of white sand seeping through the grass. The sand will be useful if we decide to make grass. The abundance of trees around here will ensure a healthy charcoal supply, if at the expense of the elves’ approval.
Andesite encompasses much of the region. It could be a sign that magma is nearby, an indispensible commodity for the dwarves. If this is true, and magma is close to the surface, our tree consumption will be dramatically reduced, which will suit both ours and the elves’ needs quite nicely.
Elephants also exist in this region. These could be a problem for us in the future, but I think if we can capture and domesticate them, they will become very invaluable for breeding for supplies.

Living Quarters

The ho-hum designs we used to use have been rejected for Zushtasharkoth in favor of Fractal Designs. Basing mine off of designs I found back at The Clasp of Onslaught, I’ve stylized the rooms on a standard 3x5 size with one unit wide branches and 2 unit wide arteries. I’m not an expert at these, but it’s a start. Break rooms will be placed in this zone as well, 15x15 that connects the paths together. Statues, tables, chairs, and terrariums will decorate these rooms for the residents’ enjoyment. Once we have a thriving glass industry, I will see to it that each room is decorated with clear glass of the highest quality.

Summer

The first season passed without issue quickly. We have set up temporary shops while Kogan mines out the mountain. There is good news. We have found a magma pool in the mountains only a short distance from the entrance hall. I’ve set up a magma workshop locale for when we start our steel and glass industries.
The entrance is being carved out of the mountain by Kogan and smoothed by Fath. The entrance will be trapped with cage traps in case of invaders. I will be in charge of constructing the mechanisms. Fire snakes have entered the fortress, which could be used to extract liquid fire, a valuable resource, but I’m not sure what it’s used for. I’ve made an order for thrones and tables to create the dining hall. It’s a big hall, so I’ve made a huge order. With the limited manpower we have, I don’t expect it to be done the next day, but I’m running out of ideas as to how to get rid of all these Armok-damn rocks.
I stepped on a fucking rock when getting out of bed this morning, and I’m still feeling the sting in my big toe. Fath was laughing at me about it during lunch. I had half a mind to throw him into the river.

Autumn

We’ve made further progress. The dining room is still being constructed, but at least we have tables. Rocks are still everywhere, and I’ve taken it upon myself to make the siege engines to practice advanced defense. The firing chamber will be stationed in the entrance hall aiming down at the trade depot and the outside world beyond. Fortifications will separate us from approaching forces while allowing us to pummel them with stones as they try to infiltrate the fortress. Kogan and Fath have become lovers. It’s only natural. I’ve seen many relationships spark between Masons and Miners, and this is no different.
The first caravan from the Mountainhome has arrived. I purchased an Iron Anvil for us. The magma forge will be open soon, and my anticipation is quite palpable.
Umm… ok, I have to make a confession here. Upon setting up the catapults, I fired a test shot just to make sure it was operating correctly, and I… kinda got carried away. I got a little too much into it and started launching more and more rocks out of the entrance hall and into the open air. On a positive note, I have gotten quite adept at firing the damn thing, and we’ve rid ourselves of quite a few stones. I just hope I didn’t wing any hippos out there. Last thing I need to see are those bastards storming into the Fortress with a lump on their heads.

End of winter 315

Once residents from the Mountainhome arrive and my term as leader ends, I think I will resign myself to become the fortress’s Smithy and Siege operator. The magma workshops have been set up, and the red gold heats up the floor below me as I write this chapter in the completed workshop. When Kogan dug out the residencies, we found a nice cluster of Aluminum, which I used to break in the new magma smelter. It makes me want to cry, it works so beautifully. But there is no time for crying. There is much work to be done around the fortress, and SOMEONE HAS TO TAKE CARE OF ALL THESE FUCKING ROCKS!
I think they’re breeding. I got all the rocks out of my room last night only to wake up and find MORE ROCKS! I think I’ve become legendary at firing the damn things out of the catapults now. Anything to get rid of them. Let the hippos deal with them; I don’t care, as long as they’re out of the way for more productive things.

DF Bug Reports / [A not bug] Where'd all the items go?
« on: February 08, 2010, 11:11:27 am »
When the human caravan arrived, I went to go put items into the depot, but when I brought up the menu, almost nothing was there. The only things that were in there were items that were not stored in bins or barrels. Everything else is stored in a bin and barrel. What the hell happened?! I have several hundred thousand dwarfbucks worth of crap that I need to trade, and now I have no way of accessing them!

DF Suggestions / Further usage of the Alchemist's Lab
« on: February 08, 2010, 02:04:42 am »
Are there going to be any future plans for the purpose of the Alchemist's Lab outside of making the soap? I was thinking it over for a while and decided on a few things. Once the whole venom, bacteria and all that hooplah is added in the next build, couldn't you use the lab for formulating vaccines and making ointments and tinctures to cure poisons, heal rotting tissue, slow bleeding, suppress stomach acids (Cure for cave adaption) or numb pain? Or how about, as a twist, also being able to make poisons to stun, maim, or kill targets with?

DF General Discussion / Unexplainable game/system slowdown (Resolved)
« on: February 06, 2010, 02:42:16 pm »
I've had this problem for almost 2 weeks now. It's not only this game, but any game that was programmed in C++. When I first starts the game, it will run smooth as giant cave spider silk, but after a few minutes, it will begin to chug. BIG TIME. What's normally at an optimum whatever the max FPS on this game is, the game will dissolve down to 1/8 of a frame per second. It will take up to 8 seconds to refresh one frame. I have been scouring the internet for any kind of response as to what this problem may be, and I've not received any conclusive answer from anyone. I'm using the most recent version of Dwarf Fortress, and yes, this computer can more than handle it.
