DF Bug Reports / Unexplainable game/system slowdown
« on: February 06, 2010, 02:16:30 am »
I've had this problem for almost 2 weeks now. It's not only this game, but any game that was programmed in C++. When I first starts the game, it will run smooth as giant cave spider silk, but after a few minutes, it will begin to chug. BIG TIME. What's normally at an optimum whatever the max FPS on this game is, the game will dissolve down to 1/8 of a frame per second. It will take up to 8 seconds to refresh one frame. I have been scouring the internet for any kind of response as to what this problem may be, and I've not received any conclusive answer from anyone. I'm using the most recent version of Dwarf Fortress, and yes, this computer can more than handle it.

Due to a architectural oversight on my fortress, I accidentally flooded my basement, where I'm currently storing items. Will they still be there after the lake freezes again and I try to mine them out?

DF Bug Reports / Water to clay ground
« on: February 03, 2010, 03:12:19 pm »
I'm building a basement in the water in my fortress, which build when the lake freezes. When I removed the "water" floor to build a downward stairway even deeper into the lake, I noticed that the dug-in stairway.... was made of "CLAY"! How the hell did that happen?! I'm in the middle of the damn lake!

DF General Discussion / Dragon Age dwarves
« on: February 01, 2010, 11:40:46 pm »
When I play Dragon Age, I can't help but think of Dwarf Fortress when it comes to the dwarves. So many interesting parallels. (SPOILER ALERT)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Urist McRedshirt, Ensign, has been stuck down!
« on: January 31, 2010, 01:14:02 pm »
In my 10 year fortress, I've experienced only a handful of deaths to various things, from idiot dwarves walling themselves off to collapsing an entire floor with them still standing on it, and now getting incinerated by a Dragon. Here's the strange thing, though. All the dwarves that have died so far have all been dwarves who didn't have any relationships in the fortress past "Passing Acquaintance".  The Dragon blew right past mothers, children, babies, and fathers, burned down a few workshops, only to kill the red shirts of the fortress.

Has anyone else experienced this anomaly?

DF General Discussion / Null space discovered
« on: January 31, 2010, 11:03:52 am »
I found a strange tile in my Fortress when the lake froze over again. In the basement on one wall, I never got the chance to erect walls to keep water from flooding the incomplete room in the lake, and when the lake froze over...

There was no tile. No tile graphic on the three tiles. When I examined the area, there was no description in the box, but it was labeled as inside, light, and above ground, as you would expect from its location.

DF General Discussion / Pushing past the population cap
« on: January 18, 2010, 09:16:15 pm »
I set the population cap to 100, and even though I reached that number years ago, my dwarves still keep pumping out babies. Through reproduction alone, the dwarves have pushed the population to 120 dwarves. how the hell do I stop them!?

DF General Discussion / The entire fortress is guilty!
« on: January 18, 2010, 08:02:34 pm »
During my last trade session, after the caravan embarked on their journey, the nobles suddenly issued a ban on crowns, amulets, and pretty much every other trade good you can imagine. Of course, I couldn't do anything about it, and now my entire Fortress is on the Justice list for various Draconian sentences. Is there any way to cancel ALL the needed justice to dispense?

DF General Discussion / Did the Lions take revenge for Boatmurdered?
« on: January 18, 2010, 12:56:48 pm »

Lions go on an all out attack against Elephants. Look at the date. It's in sync with the time that Boatmurdered was still being played. Are the lions fighting for the dwarves?

....imagine breeding War Lions to fight the Elephants. Imagine the hell that would raise.

DF General Discussion / Urist's new grenade launcher
« on: January 14, 2010, 09:59:24 pm »
I came across an awesome image today from Kingdom Under Fire II that I think should be brought to your attention.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He has reached the pinnacle of dwarfy firepower. The only way it could be any more dwarfy was if the grenades spewed magma.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The dwarven ego at its finest
« on: January 13, 2010, 05:15:39 pm »
While engraving the Administration's rooms, the Mayor engraved something I think is a little big-headed.

Engraved on the floor is a superiorly designed image of Kadol Boatscovers the dwarf and dwarves by Kadol Koganlaltur. Kadol Boatscovers is surrounded by the dwarves. The artwork is related to the ascension of the dwarf Kadol Boatscovers to leadership of the Citadel of the Sun in the early spring of 303.

This was done in the Mayor's office. Several times.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Consequence of siege survivors
« on: January 10, 2010, 10:57:54 pm »
I'm talking about enemy survivors. Last siege was a fleet of 47 goblins. All but one goblin died, a squad leader, because my dwarves decided to go back and drink while they were supposed to be cleaning up.

Well, I think that came to bite me in the ass, as I originally predicted. One season later, I have gotten another siege, this one is even bigger.

71 Goblins O____o

Traders buy those 'narrow' armor sets you picked up off the slaughtered goblins from the last siege. They were mostly leather and cave spider silk.

What the hell do other places do with them? It's not like metal where you can melt into bars. Do they put them in museums or do they hold huge bonfires in celebration of one less gob?

In adventurer mode, I've killed a small handful of Carp and Sturgeon, and now for some reason, a huge fleet of the terrors of the deep are FLEEING from me as I slowly swim towards them and hack them apart one by one. If they had half a mind to attack me, I wouldn't stand a chance. Now they're just running off without a fight.

Here's a picture. I'm sneaking up on them right now to get the shot, but the instant I got out of hiding, they ran off.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Endless mandates for metal on a metalless map
« on: January 06, 2010, 04:40:51 pm »
The nobles are becoming an issue due to their endless mandates. The Count got balsy and issued three mandates at once, and that's not counting the other mandates being issued by the rest of the nobles. Due to my horrendous luck, last time this happened in a now derelict fortress, the Hammerer issued the death penalty for all infractions of the law, and killed my entire population.

This time around, I'm only building this fortress to create the above water fortress. There is quite literally no metal here, only gems. For some reason, i can't find metal ore of any kind; only gems, and the nobles have a sickening fetish for metals and keep issuing mandates, one on top of the other (They're all ecstatic, by the way). I know that there is no metal, since I'm stripping the land clean for all the rocks.

I'm prepping to drown them in the lake, or maybe locking them in their rooms and letting them starve to death. I can't have them fucking up my mega-structure's plans.

Has anyone else been having issues with mandate spamming?
