Couldn't you find a desert volcano? I know I've had at least one - and it was flush with the ground, too.

I'm not going to go through multiple worldgens to try and get a desert volcano.

The fortress will rise Saturday.

Deserts are still winning, but Volcanos are closing the gap by one vote.

Bumped.

About a week left before I start this. I'm set to breach Hell in my current Fortress.

I thought of the Japanese Miracle from Ghost in the Shell. Just in time to deal with the nuclear emergency in Japan right now.

Deserts are winning. You all want to see me get all Egyptian with this thing, don't you?

I don't blame you. A Sahara-esque desert is basically a blank architectural canvas.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNN CHRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISTMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASS!!!!

Most of the stuff goes into finished goods. Armor goes into an armor stockpile, and weapons go into a weapon stockpile. Remember to have those stockpiles made.

No no, strip mining is much easier and convenient now. When you channel out a section, it makes a ramp instead of a void, until there's a space between edges. I'm doing a small scale test in my current fortress, and it's working out very nicely. I can assign them to clear out an entire layer and leave them to their own devices while my attentions are focused elsewhere. The next issue is what to do once I hit the caverns. It will probably take a lot of micromanagement and floor construction to do it.

Wood is more important than stone.

There are people who would crucify you just for that expression.

Wikipedia calls it surface mining.

Either way, it's just dwarven enough that I can't not try it.

I tried a small area in my current fortress. My method is working pretty well. The next question should be what kind of site should I try this out in? since I'd be doing it all the way to the magma sea, i don't think I should try it near a volcano. An area that freezes would be useful for damming the underground lakes.

There's only one way to find out.

And I'm not going to remove all the ramps, only the ones that won't be used for maintenance . The ground floor will be a large road over the chasm that goes to the main tower.

It's not a glitch. I think Toady programmed the pick combat to work like that.

And don't think anyone's undermining a miner as a starting soldier. A lot of times, he's the only thing saving an early fortress from gypsy scum, thievin' kids and crusty jugglers.

Interesting...

Next fortress will be dedicated to carving out a massive hole in the ground.

Of course. I just didn't feel like going down the whole list.

I can already see a lot of people dropping half the job roster into the magma sea. I already have a script for the beekeeping video.
