DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: need wrestling help.
« on: October 21, 2007, 11:09:00 am »
Yeah, joints are just another body part type.  Right now, Toady only defined joints for most humanoids.  Joints are attached to body parts, and by convention (and logic) the joint is associated to the limb farther away from the heart -- so, for instance, to break the "ankle" you need to grab the "foot" (the foot is farther away from the heart than the ankle), to break the "knee" you need to grab the "lower leg" (the lower leg is farther from the heart than the knee), etc.

If you're looking for wrestling moves to perform against non-humanoids, grab the head and gouge their eyes.  This is very effective.

There's a lot more than six roaches.  I collected most of them before a snakeman bit my expert adventurer and he (very, very slowly) was beaten to death.

Counting from gamelog.txt, I picked up 29 roaches and put them in my backpack.

That's to prevent "the tink effect" you get when the queen walks by.  I would imagine it accounted for quite a large number of beheadings of ordinarily loyal knights.

Cerej already pointed out that this isn't true, but I also have to point out that if you're using plate armour for padding, you aren't taking advantage of what plate armour is for.

Plate armour is intended to deflect blows.  This makes it excellent against swords and light commoners' weapons like clubs, but makes it poor against everything else -- bodkin arrows, axes, maces, flails, etc.  Chain armour and padded doublets fill in this gap by absorbing blows beneath the plate armour.  While you're more or less screwed if you get hit by a bodkin arrow, regardless of what armour you're wearing, maces and flails will have a tough time hurting you because the chain maille and padding underneath will diffuse the blow over a large portion of your torso.  It'll still hurt like hell, but better that than getting rattled around like a bird in a cage.

That part is very true.  I once asked a Scotsman about it and he spit in my eye.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Most awesome kills
« on: February 09, 2007, 05:05:00 pm »
My coolest kill, or rather kills, I had two days ago (at least I think it was two days ago... I've lost a little track of time lately).  We were wandering around the wilderness killing cougars, wolves, and other temperate beasties for fun.  In one encounter, however, several wolves managed to bring down one of my spearmen buddies, and I charged to the rescue.

Over three turns, I did the following to the three wolves on top of him:

1) Behead one wolf.
2) Chop another wolf in half.
3) Propel a wolf away with a forceful blow into a tree, where the wolf exploded apart.

[edit]Yep, here we are.  Had the order of events wrong, but the events were correct:

The Spearman's right eye has been torn out!
The Spearman's brain has been torn!
The wolf latches on firmly!
The wolf shakes The Spearman around by the head!
A chunk is torn away!
You charge at The wolf!
You hack at The wolf in the upper body with your širon scimitarš!
It is cloven asunder!
The wolf is propelled away by the force of the blow!
The wolf has been struck down.
The wolf bites The Swordsman in the left upper arm!
The shot glances away.
You hack at The wolf in the head with your širon scimitarš!
The head flies off in an arc!
The wolf has been struck down.
You hack at The wolf in the upper body with your širon scimitarš!
It is cloven asunder!
The wolf is propelled away by the force of the blow!
The wolf slams into an obstacle and blows apart!
The wolf has been struck down.

Seeing a mention of someone throwing off all of their clothes in a topic named "safety first" might give people the wrong impression...

After the new version, you might consider having those sorts of caves appear as holes in the sides of mesa-like hills that don't have any other ramps.  It would make them stand out a lot more.

In Adv Mode, you can walk up rivers, though it might depend on the underlying terrain.  But given that there are mountains completely surrounding that corner, with no rivers leading up, no, there's no way to get around.

That's the corner of the map?  There's no glaciated terrain that I can see...

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Favored Weapons?

I like doing that, but what I particularly enjoy is stealing an enemy's weapon and throwing it at one of his friends, then proceeding to beat both.

What I'm eagerly looking forward to is the day that Toady adds in kicks and trips and possibly multiple-tile-arc swings.

There are, like, a million topics about this. =P

Short and sweet.

I started a Play Now! character who started the game naked and unskilled outside one of my fortresses.  She ran into a ratman as soon as she opened the fort's main door, charged into him, and stunned him in one blow.  With her left hand, she gouged out its eyes, blood streaming all over, at the same time as she latched onto its throat with her right hand and choked the !*$% out of it.

Just as the ratman finally gave a death rattle and spasmed loosely under her bloodied hands, two more ratmen and a batman appeared from around the corner in hot pursuit.  She did the smart thing and ran, managing to escape the fortress and travel to civilisation.  Unfortunately, the measly 150¤ she managed to take back with her (a stack of 5 portions of cow cheese from the trade depot, which she cashed in at the grocer) wasn't enough to even buy a rope reed dress.

Feeling disappointed, she decided to wander a bit to improve her experience before going back to the fortress.  In an "evil" wilderness, she was accosted by a harpy -- one grab to the throat and the harpy was as good as dead, as she never stood a chance from that point on.

Stumbling onto a cave in the middle of the forest, she decided to give it a whirl and wandered to the entrance.

As soon as she stepped onto the ramp, a giant rat tore off her head in a single bite.  She didn't even see the rat -- it was at the bottom of the ramp waiting for her.

God, that would be a cool feature... but maybe it could be made into a function of Throwing skill as well, so skillful human throwers could also catch things.

(I'm reminded of Casino Royale where Bond catches the gun and throws it back, thwacking him right between the eyes.)

Yep, nteract (that's Shift+I, or else it'd be nteract).

Be careful, though... pulling out objects gives a good chance of starting to bleed.

The whole grind-up thing has never struck me as particularly entertaining.  Far more fun to die a horrible death with five zombies tearing your limbs off than it is to waltz around with no challenge.  Besides, if you earn your stat-ups in battle, it feels that much more rewarding when you can one-shot titans. =)
