You will definitely want to update.  It was added in a very recent version. ;-)

Cats also have the fun tendency to pick a closed door somewhere and just stare.

Note that it stays relatively warm underground all year round, so if you're having problems with water freezing, try digging an underground reservoir and filling it with water using whatever means you feel are necessary.

Dwarves have such an advanced society!  Who needs such silly concepts as "modesty"?  Snuggling injured people and walking around in their pure, beautiful, natural states... why, dwarves are the embodiment of peace and love!

FYI, the patron dwarf nation doesn't get pissed if the caravan dies off, although it really kills your immigration rate.  Dwarves are trusting of one another.

Now, HUMANS, they get pissed off. =)

DF General Discussion / Re: Overworld/Map orientation
« on: August 20, 2006, 09:23:00 am »
If we could get a configuration option for keeping the map rotated according to the mountain in the overworld, I'd be happy.  I actually think the always-on-the-right is a little off-putting at times, since it makes every fortress look the same no matter where you stick it.

How gracefully would the Tab-menu map handle non-standard rotations, though?

Dead serious.  I encountered one on my current fort.  I started this fort last night and didn't think to snap a screenshot of it, though. =)

That bug has been fixed anyway, so there's nothing to worry about.

DF General Discussion / God I love the combat in this game...
« on: August 23, 2006, 10:25:00 pm »
I was playing as a talented crossbowman with proficient wrestling.  While fighting, I decided to go exploring on my own in the caves because my three melee lunkies were doing a good enough job dissecting the giant toad that they had struck unconscious.

The problem, of course, was that a mud man caught me by surprise when I rounded a corner.  I raised my crossbow and shot him in the right arm, but he bowled into me and mangled my leg in one blow and we both tumbled to the floor.  Not wanting to shoot myself in the foot, I struggled to get a good grip on him with my free left hand, and gripped his right arm and threw him.  This stunned him, but it also pissed him off when he recovered one turn later, and he broke my knee in retaliation.  I continued trying to grab him with my left hand, and he started bashing me all over my body, smacking the !*$% out of me and otherwise making me very, very angry.

I finally managed to grab his foot.  He struggled against it, but my grip was true.  With my grip on his foot, I threw him once again.  This time I was lucky enough to toss him a whole tile away into the wall, which stunned him.  Then I raised my crossbow and planted a crossbow bolt square in the *@$%#er's brain.

I love this game. =)

DF General Discussion / Re: Dogs topic
« on: August 19, 2006, 04:33:00 pm »
I'm not Toady and my words should thus be taken with a pinch of salt, but:

* Dogs are just dogs.  They're good as pets.
* Hunting dogs are naturally stealthy, so they are good for helping hunters when they are assigned to them using the [v], [p]refs, work-[a]nimals function (I think that's the key, I could be wrong).
* War dogs are brutal but not as quick as hunting dogs.  They might be useful for hunting too, but I tend to keep my war dogs back home in order to protect my people from subterranean invaders and crazies.

DF General Discussion / Re: How the heck do I get stairs to work?
« on: October 30, 2007, 07:34:00 pm »
To build a ramp down, place a Ramp Up on the level below, immediately below where you want the ramp down to appear.

I don't think it's actually possible to build a ramp inside a mountain from down to up, due to a quirk with the way the game handles ramps, so ironically the Ramp Up is used for building ramps down only.

Yeah, stairs work in pairs.  (It rhymes.)

Dig an up-stairs on the level below, then dig a down-stairs on the level above.  Up/down-stairs count as both, but are ugly.

Someone gave a story about being attacked by werewolves on a sinister map.  That might be your best bet. =)
