DF General Discussion / Re: Dragonslaying

If you've got the cojones and the means, you can try fortifying the walls of your fortress and installing ballistae behind them.  A ballista is a great weapon and though I've never actually tried using one against a dragon I imagine that it'd at least make it think twice.

Raw lobster and turtles aren't eaten when raw and uncleaned.  If they are, it's a bug.  However, they *can* be eaten just fine when they're uncooked, if they've been cleaned: dwarves are the sushi experts of the land.

Size is relative.  15 MB is pretty small these days. =)

I can already hear the humans in the valley laughing, all the way from my fortress...

IMO, nothing about this is a bug or anything that needs to be fixed.  Proper fortress management involves ensuring that the stone is hauled out of the way as soon as it is extracted from the rock face.  If things are starting to get cluttered, you just have to live with it until you can bring the problem under control.

Maybe I'm just being needlessly steadfast in my opinion, though.  It again seems like I'm the only one who waits until things are clear before building things or designating piles. =)

DF General Discussion / Re: Do the mason shop use any stone available?
« on: August 23, 2006, 05:43:00 pm »
A mining pile is handy at the very start of the game, just outside your tunnel entrance, as at that point you have no concern over what form of rock is coming out of the mountain -- your goal is to dig, not smelt ore, cut gems, or make dark stone crafts.

After you've gotten a foothold in the mountain, a mining pile is less necessary.  However, it once again becomes useful in the late game with a mining pile deep inside the mountainface because it allows the haulers to daisy-chain the work of extracting the rock from deep in the mountain.  Setting up your mining pile deep inside will have some of your haulers collect the new products of mining while other haulers of yours will ferry rock out of the mining pile to their respective storage locations.

The mining pile also works well as a sort of "overflow", meaning that if your stockpiles for stone, ore, and gems aren't large enough to fully contain all of the things you're extracting from the rock face, it will just be put into a mining pile instead.  This, of course, assumes that your mining pile is farther away than your other stockpiles...

"Rock" is the grey stone.

Aha!  My archer has a shortsword stuck in his upper leg and I had no idea how to get it out.

Thanks!

If you don't mind me asking, why was this done in the first place?  It wouldn't be hard to support both versions on the pages as they are ("In version x, behaviour is like this, in version y, behaviour is like that"), and forcing people to interact with two different Wikis, not to mention having to juggle two different user accounts, not to mention the people who lost their user pages ;-), is pointless to me. =)

You can assign them as pets, but not temporarily.  Just assign them as hunting dogs like you would with a hunter.  It's in the [v][p] menu.

Thankee!  PayPal's birthday present for me was a put-me-93-cents-in-the-hole transaction because they screwed things up, so I'm a bit cheesed right now, but so far the day's turning out fine. ;-)

Most of you have no idea who the hell I am, but on Monday, October 29th (tomorrow as of writing) it will be my birthday.  If Toady is indeed correct when he says it's on track for a Monday release, any other birthday present will pale in comparison.

Here's hoping for the most wonderful present ever.
