- No capability to review past announcements. Obviously players will want to review announcements of things happening in case they missed something, or when they're currently busy and they want to look later.
- Similarly, no capability to review past combat logs. Obviously players will want to review these in the future, they are fun and can allow you to view how a dwarf died. Solution for both of these could be to have a dedicated tab somewhere that lists them. You know, a "log" menu with different tabs for reports, announcements, combat, ect.

To me this is the biggest thing missing / not working for steam release and it makes it mostly unplayable for me. I know you CAN play without all of this information but none of the added benefits of the steam version out weight this information being missing.

We desperately need a log menu that shows and stores all of the logs. Things happen in the steam version and you'll never know what/why/how if you accidently killed the announcement or in most cases because it was never announced. I'd easily spend as much time sifting the logs for interesting / funny events than I would spent playing.

Sofar it is pretty good. It's rimworld with dwarves. The big thing here will be how well it runs with a full sized fort late game.

Also wish there was multiple z levels but all these DF clones seem to keep it on one 2d level which will be a deal breaker for most people but it's still a nice change of pace between failed forts in DF.

DF General Discussion / Best portable device for playing DF 2020?
« on: July 27, 2020, 02:02:19 pm »
In reference to this thread which I didnt want to necro since it's 2+ years old.

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=169186.0

Ever since the steam announcement I've been getting back into DF and RimWorld. But for the most part I generally play while watching something on netflix or listening to a podcast. But I want to shift from my computer room to the couch to spend time with my wife while she watches stuff.

I tried using my wife's ipad and Mifki's remote fortress ap but that really does not do it for me... Plus, I sometimes have to go out of town to job sites for work so it would be nice to run the thing locally on the machine.

So we are back to the age old question... whats the best/cheapest laptop for dwarf fortress. Needs a fast single core clock speed plus 16gb of ram and a large cache size? Is there really anything else needed?

Anyone have a laptop that DF runs well on?

They are talking about world of warcraft FFS.

I still get the same error and I do hve the c++ 2008 redistribute. I reinstalled it anyways though just to make sure and the error persists.

Im on an i7 with 12gigs of ram running vista 64. I wonder if it isnt a vista 64 problem?

Also, I have no problem running any of the other DFHack utilities.

Dont spend too much time on it, I am sure as the project proceeds the problem will iron it's self out.

This application has failed to start because msvcp100d.dll was not found.

Hmmm.

Today I took some time to think about the site/population rewrite that's the foundation of a lot of the future developments, mainly having your own sites in adventure mode, having sprawl/rural areas, villain groups, and having more dwarves live around you off-map in dwarf mode. Since I'm aiming for the 22nd or 23rd for the next release, I'm not sure if that rewrite is going to fit or not. I'd like to take some small steps on the dev page each time I release, but this one is larger and it still needs to be done early. If we wind up with some more days of bug fixing and then the site/pop rewrite first thing for the release after the next one, I wouldn't be surprised.

So does that mean we will finally be able to abandon (not abandon but set the fort to AI) a fortress, send the file to a friend and have them assault the fort?

I would rather see in game ads. I long for the day when a dwarf "cancels work, needs Viagra" pops up.

It only seems rude because you are referring to something that is not in this thread and has nothing to do with the application in question.  All the information is here...

Trust me, it sounds just as rude from your mouth in the context you refer to.

Personally I have always found that telling someone where to find the answer to their question without actually answering it is rude. For instance lets assume this next quote is actually an implied question. I could answer this post using that tactic to show how rude it seems.

I'm being very helpful.  I have been posting links for people who can't be bothered to scan back a page or two... and I helped people look back 7 posts to find the exact location they were looking for but read right over.

If they aren't reading, I don't know what else I can do to help.

Why dont you read a book on psychology or something. Here how about I just post a link for you instead since you cant even be bothered to waste your precious time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psycology

See how rude that seems? It shouldnt seem rude but it does just because of how impersonal that response is. Well, I may have exaggerated it with the last part to prove a point but still.

Posting just the links as if a FAQ is a good start though but if someone comes in and asked the question in spite of it why not just post the direct answer. It takes just as long as posting a snide comment and a redirect to the answer.

DF Modding / Re: DFHack 0.4.0.2 - tools and memory access library
« on: July 12, 2010, 01:28:54 pm »
So all we need is the new offsets and we can plug in a 31.10 entry into the memory area and get it working again right? I already tried using the DFT offsets but they didnt work. Is there a hack program for getting those values or do you just need to hex edit and find them?

DF Modding / Combat Log Names
« on: July 11, 2010, 05:39:42 pm »
Is there a way to mod the game so that the combat log lists people's names instead of their occupation? For instance.

Quote
The Werewolf shakes The Fishery Worker around by the head!
The Fishery Worker loses hold of the (pig tail fiber hood).
The Fishery Worker loses hold of the (pig tail fiber cap).
The head is ripped away and remains in The Werewolf's grip!
Bomrek Kokebkadol, Fishery Worker has been struck down.

It isnt until after he died that we get his name. In large combat where there are multiple of the same occupations it becomes impossible to read what is going on.

I would prefer it to read just like the last sentence for every log entry so I know what is doing what to whom. Is that possible? Or is it already on the list for a future version?
