DF Gameplay Questions / A question about migrants!

Is it possible to change the amount of migrants  in the d_init.txt file at any time while you have an active game?


Example: I start a fort with the default settings, get 30+ dorfs, and then quit the game, change settings to 0, re-enter game. Will I recieve more migrants, or do the settings only affect newly created forts?

Sorry if I'm unclear, I've been awake way too long.

DF General Discussion / Dwarf Fortress, and its effect on your psyche.

Last night I dreamt that me, some friends and other randoms were reclaiming a fortress.
The fortress was in terrible shape! Leaks on the roof! Goblins everywhere!

So yeah, only 7 people were actually working, and I distinctly remember saying "F*CKING IDLERS!" before going off and yelling at them.

Who else has had awesome dreams? Post and describe!

Hey everyone. I'm considering starting up my first textile industry. I was considering a kindof sweatshop production line. Each dorf would have access to his workshop (loom, clothier etc), his material and his product stockpiles.

The ones in square brackets and bold are stockpiles.

Grower <---> [PLANT] <----> Thresher <----> [THREAD] <----> Weaver <----> [CLOTH] <----> Clothier <----> [TRADE DEPOT]

Of course, none of them can leave their workstations. They will each have a small bed and a pool of water. Food will be dropped in from above.

Any recommendations? Hints? Advice?

DF Suggestions / Longer chains!

I was setting a couple of guard dogs at my entrance, and thought of the possibility of longer chains! I'm pretty bad at phrasing suggestions, but just thought that it would be cool if you could designate the number of 'standard chain lengths' (what we have now) to make multi-tile constraints. More material required to make longer chains, and maybe even add an option to lengthen or shorten a chain which requires the blacksmith labor.

Thoughts?

DF Gameplay Questions / Need assistance with tilesets

I've been attempting to install a square tileset (Dortans 9x9) and have been trying to increase the amount of grid tiles and decrease black space in fullscreen mode. I've tried following the steps in the wiki, but it never works.
Could somebody write me up exactly what I need to change?
Resolution is 1050 x 1200
Help would be much appreciated.

In the previous version of DF, I would begin an embark at the comfortable rate of 100fps. But now when I run the game it's about 7fps. The computer is the same, and I have all the same settings... What could be causing it?

My first suggestion.

It think it would add extra depth to the game if for instance, we selected to make a Bronze Short Sword, and it brought up another menu asking what style to make it. I'm not sure if I'm explaining it properly, I'll show you.

-->Make Bronze Short Sword
------->Serrated
------->Barbed
------->Curved
------->Normal

--> Make Steel Spear
------->Hooked
------->Barbed
------->Normal

--> Make Iron Bolts/arrows
------->Broad head
------->Bodkin

And so on...

Thoughts?

DF Gameplay Questions / So I was embarking on a glacier...

I've always wanted to experiment with different setups to melt ice, so i embarked on a glacier.

Within 7 days, all my livestock (13 horses, 4 dogs) suffered yellow wounds to every single part of their body, including organs, and died shortly after.

HOW the HFS did this happen? I read somewhere that cold can damage creatures, but this quickly? To this extent?

At what temperates does it starts pwning animals?

I"m looking through the raws to try and find what would be the best animal(s) to raise for meat. Where in the raws would I find:

How often they give birth?
How many babies they pop out at once?
How long until said babies reach maturity?
