We're a pretty large landmass, I wouldn't really call us an 'island'.

That being said, there's only one civilisation, so trading would be a bit difficult.

I go through Dwarf Fortress phases. One day I'll hear the calling and come back, but until then there's nothing I can do to force it.

You should modify the raws if you want the true human experience. Delete cave adaption and alcoholism, and add in above ground farming/wood.

Building a fort above ground requires a shit-load of materials, so I suggest bringing some raw materials at embark to get accomodations sorted out.

A window would do nicely. The magma won't destroy it since it wouldn't occupy the same tile as the magma.

Murky pool tiles are the only ones that generate water during rain, so all you need to do is make a tunnel from the bottom of a murky pool down to an underground cistern to have an infinite, regenerating water supply. That dorfy enough for you?
