General Discussion / Re: I like anime, do you like anime?
« on: January 02, 2016, 08:44:54 pm »
I actually found him tolerable in the UBW anime, but this comes with a caveat - I really like his development in that one more than I like him. He starts out pretty shitty but the lessons he learns over the course of it are ones I think are really good ones, even if they don't actually wind up making him particularly great as an overall character. He was a lot less awful about "I should protect you because you're a girl" (compared with the Studio Deen adaptation, anyway, but considering the plot of that route the adapters can't be entirely to blame), and in general just came off as extremely stupid in exactly the ways the plot insists that he is. But they never explain the magic item protecting him, if I remember correctly, which is something they needed to do considering how many times he should have died and was saved only by its miraculous intervention - without it, the part where it seems insulting to the people he's fighting is a pretty valid criticism. It's frustrating because they have foreshadowing for it, too.

He at least seems pretty willing to kill his final boss in UBW, though.

never did read the vn and never plan to, though

My plans for the night have been derailed by mysterious events that have summoned a friend away, but I have determined an effective coping strategy.

i'm gonna get trashed on expensive beer and cheap hamburgers and have space adventures

Spoiler: Color Scheme (click to show/hide)

1. Earn Master's Degree.
2. Subgoal: Maintain 3.9+ GPA
3. Subgoal: Convince POS* committee to let me do my creative component in a way that involves recurrent neural networks and natural language processing.
4. Find employment for after goal 1. Don't need to be actually employed before 2016-12-31, but do need to accept a job offer (which means getting one).
5. Participate in 2016's NCAC. Doesn't count unless we make it to DC again, but we don't have to win for this goal to be satisfied. It'd be nice though.
6. Attend at least one local Cyber Defense Competition.
7. Learn Torch and use it for things.
8. Configure my pentesting/development laptop.
9. Obtain the Despecialized Edition of Star Wars.
10. Cook something vaguely healthy at least twice a week. Doesn't count unless it's got two or more vegetables in it.
11. Shave at least twice a week.
12. Read The Society of Mind and finish Plato's Dialogues.

When the room was quiet just now, before I turned on the computer and drowned it out, I was hearing a very faint, rhythmic sound, just outside of hearing, seemingly coming from nowhere in particular.
If I never post again, I was abducted by aliens.  :P
In the back of Egan_BW's brain is a sound unlike any other. Faintly, only at the edges, is a thumping, pulsing rhythm. Oontz oontz oontz oontz

debating whether to get this game or not. The thread here is certainly long enough to show me that folks like it, but I dont really like "hard  for the sake of being hard" games much. For example, I really liked FTL when I first started but after making almost no progress on many attempts, I just burned out. I like to feel some sense of progression and the meta-game ship upgrade thing in FTL wasnt enough for me.

So, will i like this game?
I think you'll like this game most of the time, because there is definitely a strong sense of progression as your heroes become more powerful and you cross off goals.

However, I think you will also occasionally be incredibly angry at it, because occasionally it just throws a completely unwinnable situation at you and expects you to deal with it.

Your call if that's worth it.

The most recent update looks really good, though - I'm a huge fan of the part where trying to target an Afflicted character who refuses allows you to do something else with the character instead. That was one of the biggest tantrum spirally mechanics in the game, and one of the ones that felt the least fair about it, because it meant that the correct choice could often fuck you over because the RNG was having a bad day (and I really hate mechanics that punish you for learning how to play the game).

EDIT: To clarify that last part, characters who crack from stress become Afflicted with a psychological problem. If you target such a character with some ability, for instance healing, they may refuse to allow it. It used to be that this would not only prevent you from executing your plan, the character who did the healing or whatever would also lose their turn. Now your plan is just ruined, but you can try and salvage it - which is something I like the game to be encouraging at every opportunity.

Any mechanic that gives you more chances to desperately try to make the best of a bad situation is a good one, but the Moar Challenge crowd tends to encourage mechanics that don't actually give you that because if something goes wrong or you make a mistake, you're fucked no matter what you do. And that's not desperate, that's depressing.

Well, here's my question for you. How much does that bother you? It sounds like a lot. The student loan debt bubble hasn't burst yet. If you're okay with being up to your eyeballs in non-dischargeable debt in exchange for a chance (not a guarantee) at life better than what you expect, it's worth considering. I'm phrasing it as harshly as I can because I don't want to be misleading, but in retrospect I can say it was a good decision for me, at least. If you really care about doing something that interests you, and you're willing to take risks to make that happen, look into it. You may have already exhausted Federal loans, but private ones may still be available.

Alternatively, if you can meet your current obligations on part-time work, you can practice those skills in your downtime until you can freelance enough work to pay for the degree or portfolio your way into a job. If you're stuck living with family, and you have no outstanding debts (or, I'm assuming, kids of your own to feed), you may be able to generate a net positive cash flow for the home on even a minimum wage, part-time job, but that's something to discuss with the parents. If you need resources for free studying, I'm sure folks around here can provide some helpful things.

so, miauw, here's the important thing to realize

chances are, you matter a lot less to her than she does to you, unless she also has a crush on you (in which case it's possible she's overthinking her own behavior in an effort to avoid coming off as needy)

and that's okay, because your hopes and dreams don't rely on her having the same feelings about you, they rely on her being willing to give you a chance - which means you have an opportunity to make an impression that gives rise to those feelings even if they don't spontaneously occur

but, one way or the other, here is what you have to do - make your life about something other than her

there is literally no downside, because having your own interests will make you more attractive, because you can share them with her instead of only picking up things she likes, and because you will be less fixated on her, but they will also help you cope if she turns out to be not interested

but you should probably say something now, because if she hasn't made a move toward you by this point she probably isn't going to, and so your alternatives are mostly "let us both molder in anxiety and awkwardness wondering if we both feel the same way until one of us cracks" or "i alone will molder in anxiety and awkwardness until it gets creepy because i've been hiding this for so long it demonstrates i'm not really willing to trust her", neither of which is particularly nice to either of you

i recommend copying this exact message and sending it along facebook - "hey, i was wondering - do you want to get dinner sometime?"

then go play video games or something and/or whatever

and if she says no then you still win because you get to stop worrying

I got nothing for Kot.

Seemed like a good idea at the time.

Feh. I'm all for arguing political philosophy, but I'm not willing to endorse a candidate who prioritizes it over national economic suicide. If you construct a system that keeps the government running unless actively shut down by Congress, instead of one that requires constant legislative action just to keep going, then sure.

I mean, if we could get an Amendment in that reads, "In a year in which a Federal agency is not funded or a Federal financial obligation is not addressed in a passed budget, the previous year's funding toward that agency or obligation will be applied. In no case will this be held to require the Government to overpay on a financial obligation. For each such agency or obligation, Congress may pass a bill to deny that agency's or obligation's funding through this Amendment for the coming year. One such bill may apply to multiple agencies and/or obligations." that'd go a long fucking way. Get somebody who knows more about economics than Bauglir to rewrite the "financial obligation" bit and throw in a clause to deal with stuff like the debt ceiling that isn't technically covered, I suppose.

EDIT: The obligations bit is supposed to cover things like regular payments of foreign aid, money given to States for their programs, and the like. All the money the Federal government pays out to keep things running. Bringing things to a screeching halt shouldn't be a bargaining chip, it should be something that can't happen unless somebody doesn't need bargaining chips anymore.

Because that's certainly how you want your fresh on the job rookies to start their career.
Actually, it probably is. Generally, I feel like the police force should be as discouraging as possible - weed out people who aren't really cut out for it, whether because they don't act well under pressure or are in it for a power kick. I'm hoping they've got a partner around to look to for advice and to keep them safe and/or in line if things go to shit with that theory, obviously. And some immediate follow-up with safe work designed to foster comfort with the community should get thrown in there too, since you also obviously don't want to support the paranoia thing we complain about so much, but still.

I know none of that is what went into the fustercluck here, but still. In principle, I think there's a point to be made here about a shitty first day.

Why would anyone not stylise things in the way you're meant to?
Sturgeon's Revelation applies here, too. 90% of people are crud

@Truean

The important thing for glasses is that their construction matches your eyes. As with medicine, it's important to get within a particular range, not just to pass a certain threshold. Any change in the state of your eyes, even for the better, will throw that off. If memory serves, it's because the focal point won't quite line up with where the shape of your eyes needs it to be for most nearsighted folks.

Nah, just kidding, it's some bullshit excuse about who it was made for.
It would have to be bullshit. There is no group of people I can imagine that would be uncomfortable with indices starting at 0, but which could still comfortably handle implementing classes in Lua.

EDIT: Unless there's a group of people that just don't need object-oriented programming. Which is possible, it's just such a ubiquitous paradigm that it didn't even occur to me.

man, let's not comment on somebody's undertale playthrough while it's still in progress unless explicitly asked

no matter what you say it's like the worst way to mess with the experience, no matter how much impish chortling you get from the hints
