DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My greatest creation is complete!!
« on: June 30, 2007, 02:02:00 am »
I spent a long time working on this, what with the dwarves having no understanding of the concept "multiple exits".

Wanted to know what you guys thought of it.

I remember once posting on these boards about this "conspiracy" my dwarves had created, or at least, i liked to think they were conspiring. This noble had a mandate that wasn't fulfilled, and got upset by the fact that this certain dwarf wasn't punished for it. Then i read he had "talked with a friend recently". Soon after, the dwarf that was supposed to be punished, was unfortunately, and "accidentally" killed in a sparring match. I looked at the dwarf who "accidentally" killed him, and it said that he too had "talked with a friend recently". I think i also remember seeing the murderer had been "happy about a newly acquired object". Of course this was back before the z axis or relationships so there was no substantial proof and the noble and the soldier were never officially convicted of anything.... But i think you all see what went on there...

I would like to see someone build a glass replica of something and fill it with water from top to bottom using pumps or some such machine like that. I never learned how water pressure or pumps worked in dwarf fortress, and dont intend to any time soon  :)

Gravity ftw

Ratmen are great training for your military. They are pathetically weak and their only threat is their power in numbers. Just make sure you dont battle them over the chasm, thats their home turf and they get +1 morale and tend to push everything they can over that cliff. But in contained environments (cage them, let them loose on military in controlled areas) they are very useful in their own ways.

Modding is for the weak...

Just my thoughts, but i believe sending in dwarves to the front line to die is just unnecesarily barbaric. At the beginning of the game, you are given an environment that allows you to make an endless list of devices(given enough time) that void the need for dwarves to even show their face to goblins during sieges.

When you start in the worst conditions the game has to offer, survive a riot causing 80% casualties, a giant cave spider attack early on taking out half your population, and a goblin siege that is let into your main working populace because of a mitten propping a door open taking out another 70% of your populace,*inhales for a breath* then you take every chance you get at protecting your dwarves, magma dooms day devices and all.

Thank you cypher, but i think i'll try the pit with spikes, i want them to die a gory and chaotic death. And, also, the thought of having one of those cliche' jaba the hut-type removal floors would be so balla - OH-MY-GOD- GREATEST IDEA EVER- instead of spikes, I COULD PUT LIKE MONSTERS IN THERE! I just thought of that as i was typing that last part lol.

Seriously though, if i had people drop like, 1 single z level down into a pit of monster(s), would they die? Get wounded? Would they be fit enough to battle my ranc- i mean monster?

Nah im not worried about not having a dwarf ready. All you need for that is like a 3x1 room with a lever, a space for the dwarf, and a door. Lock the door with a dwarf ready at the station, when they walk by -BAM! That dwarf will be all over that lever like white on rice..

The one thing i want to know, is how do i make straight-up spikes on the floor for them to get impaled on? Or was that just a rumour?

Because the anvil is 1000 f'ing points and you can get a HELL of a lot to start out with and buy the anvil later with crap stone idols.

..for they may be your last...

So this big shot dwarf liason declined my offer so many times, even after a 600 dollar profit, that he upped and left on me before i could buy my first #^&&ing anvil!!! SOB is not getting away with that twice, im going to design some type of very large pit which i can open, on command, in the area of where the dwarven traders come and go, so that next time, if something doesn't go MY way, i can open a can of spartan woop-ass on them.

My general idea was to dig out 5ish z levels / layers of ground for the pit, build a bridge / bridges over it to completely cover it, and at the bottom build spikes ( still don't know how to do this yet) and have a single lever connect to all the bridges / the one bridge covering the pit, and once they are over it, let them fall onto the spikes, and go down through my fort and pick up the loot.

Does this sound like a plausible / good idea? Are there any other good methods people have designed for similar problems?
