DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Stuck dwarves
« on: March 29, 2007, 05:08:00 pm »
Ive seen solitary dwarves place statues, then crawl back into a space where they could not escape. It often happens with certain designs with space in akward places where the dwarf can choose which direction to crawl out from underneath the statue, but often chooses the wrong side...

Yeah it took me a long long time to find hematite. I thought my mountain was bugged or something, i had to go pretty far south before i found mine. Keep looking, it's there..in your heart... you know it to be true...*disappears into the shadows*

Perhaps it is -you- who has created the problem. Perhaps there are too many boots to choose from, and he is in an endless loop of deciding and redeciding which pair he wants... Way to go... your soldiers are going to all become gays and women by the end of the week   :p

Maybe its god's will.... Maybe the death of live stock is a sign of the end of days... (of dwarf fortress)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: will nobles be replaced?
« on: March 25, 2007, 11:09:00 pm »
Nobles are, for the most part, a liability. The only nobles that are even slightly helpful are the ones that let you see what things are worth, and the one that lets you chasm and melt things directly. Everyone else is just... there... and if they die, you lose immigration waves. The sherrif and hammerer are equally useless. 95% of the time, they imprison (AND OR BEAT TO NEAR DEATH) dwarves for milk-spill accidents that you otherwise would have dismissed or not even noticed. Not once in my 40 combined game years of governing fortresses have i EVER seen a dwarf recover back to normal after being hammered or hit from the sherrif.

And the 5% of the time they arrest someone dangerous, you probably could have brought them down your self with your personal army, and faster too since you can directly choose which of your dwarves would do it.

Even when they do arrest a dangerous dwarf, it doesn't matter, because if they've gotten so unhappy they are a danger to the community then imprisoning them is only making it worse (difficult for dwarves to sleep on rough stone, dwarves late on delivering food and water, depression from imprisonment).

All in all, you might as well declare the "Golden Age" of dwarves -over- when you see that first, purple happy face pop up on the far west side of your kingdom.....

DF Gameplay Questions / Collapsing effects of wooden buildings?
« on: January 16, 2008, 07:12:00 pm »
I started a new fort where im not allowing any digging whatsoever, and so our homes are made out of wood.

The base first floor of the structure is a simple rectangle. But when i was constructing the second level, it gave me the option to build wooden floors hanging over the edge, where there were no walls to support it, only the floor adjacent?

What is the extent to which i can build floors without supports, hanging in the air? Is it the same 9x9? Could i theoretically fill the entire sky with support-less wooden floors??

Yeah i know it won't affect the value, i don't really care. I just had the vision of it in my mind and i had to build it  :)

Do you mean outside of the mountain? Like the waterfall is hiding the window from the rest of the mountain and the baroness would look out into the waterfall?

That might be cool, i kinda thought it would be neat if it was clear though, because then she would be looking over my city, governing it, from high above in her place of power.

On a side note, the game crashed after a long time of playing, i lost alot of progress >.<

DF Gameplay Questions / Elaborate Throne Room Design Q's
« on: January 15, 2008, 08:19:00 pm »
I'm making a very ornate room for my baroness' throne room thats going to be 2 stories tall. And by that, i mean that, if a dwarf were to look up, they would see the ceiling at the second z level above him, rather than immediately above him. I have continuing supports going from 1 z level on the same space as the second z level. It's being build at the edge of the inside of a mountain, and breaking through a little, where im going to put gem windows, which brings up my first question:

What workshop creates windows made of gem? It wasn't in the glass or magma glass furnace or the jewelers shop.

Another question i had is that if i channel out the top Z level's floor, so that the 2 Z levels will be connected, will it cause any problems?

As for my gem window- will it matter which order of z levels i build them in? Can i build the gem window in the open space breaking out of the mountain on the second story, then build one below it, without anything collapsing or failing?

Does anyone have any advice or see any foreseeable accidents that might occur (am i missing something) ?

Heres a pic of it and a legend

a = second story gem window
b = second story supports
c = first floor supports
d = first floor gem window

First floor http://img253.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gemwindowgs2.png
Second Floor: http://img182.imageshack.us/my.php?image=secondstorymd2.png

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves weened off of wells?
« on: January 14, 2008, 06:51:00 pm »
I'll also save space on the boards by asking another question the wiki couldnt answer (unrelated to original topic)

I have magma, but i dont know how to harness it. How do you get a constant flow of magma, without overflowing and destroying your fort? Wiki said you need at least a depth of 4 magma to do magma smelting : how? Do you get it to fill into some kind of hole so that it pours out next to your forge? But then how would you get it to not fill -that- hole up?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves weened off of wells?
« on: January 14, 2008, 06:43:00 pm »
I had an incident where my well was temporarily out of order, i won't go into details save for the fact that i was determined to save that war dog.

Anyways, they all became super thirsty while waiting (we had no beer  :( )for it to get fixed, and i saw them start to drink from our muddy brook that used to supply our well. When i got it back up and running, some of them still wouldnt drink from the well, and i got orders of "cancel give water; no water source".

Is this temporary?
