DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Marksdwarves refusing to train
« on: October 28, 2013, 03:24:50 am »
ah, I did not realize they need a barracks too. Meh.

*edit*
I gave each squad its own armor stand and now the marksdwarves are doing individual drills at them and ignoring the archery targets. Yay?

*edit 2*
It works! They just had to bash their armor stand for a while with their crossbows before wanting to go shoot targets, I guess. Thanks for the help :)

DF Gameplay Questions / Marksdwarves refusing to train
« on: October 27, 2013, 05:31:10 am »
I have tried a lot after reading the wiki and forum, but I have 0 luck getting these guys to do...anything. Some of them say Soldier (no activity) and the rest is at Go to Archery practice. Those guys who are at that point do not move from their current spot thou...

At theame time, my squad of 10 speardwarves trains just fine, so the general idea (make squad, equip, set to active, assign barracks) has worked for me, just not for marskdwarves.

Here is what I did:
I have set up several archery targets for them. I made each its own room (wich makes them overlap), made each marksman his own squad and assigned them individually. No luck.

I noticed under the orders tab that there is a train 10 dorfs minimum setting. I set that to 1, that also did nothing.

There are plenty of bolts and quivers for them and my crafters are making the last few crossbows right now so all have one. I chekced ther equip and all available things have been picked up, there are three "going to archery practice" guys with a quiver, crossbow and bolts, but they do not actually walk to the archery target.

What am I missing?

DF Gameplay Questions / so I got a Aluminum Mail Shirt from a mood...
« on: October 26, 2013, 01:23:33 pm »
"This is a aluminum mail shirt. All craftsmanship is of the highest quality. It is studded with aluminum decorated with larch and encircled with bands of water buffalo bone"

Pretty basic but worth 146.000 dorfbucks

Is this actually any good to use as armor, or more like wrapping my best dorf in aluminum foil?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Paitents dieing because no one feeds them

also the dwarves' personalty has an effect on how quickly they will do those tasks. look for dwarves that "likes helping others" in their profiles. they make the best caretakers for the sick and doctors in general.

That would expalin why I had to cancel all the other jobs in the fort for it to happen, thanks. :)

Well, I know what went wrong now and why, it was a multi-tiered problem.

1. I did not have a hospital zone when the dorf was injured so he was put in his own bed.
2. I then declared a hospital zone in another part of the fortress, but since the injured dorf was not in it, he was not being treated.
3. Trying to make his bedroom a hospital failed because I did not free his bed and so his bed did not count for the hospital, but as its own room.

The extreme slowness of bringing food and water to the guy was resolved with disallowing all other labours on everyone, wich I guess menas that my fort was simply too buisy to care for the sick. Luckily he got better on his own :)

ok, somehow the situation resolved itself, but I definetly have to do all of what you said because I was only able to get my fortress to feed these two after I disabled every other task on every single dwarf. And even then, no one would diagnose them, they got better on their own.

Very weird..but I guess solved is solved. Now to go thru all my guys and get htem back on their proper jobs...meh

DF Gameplay Questions / Paitents dieing because no one feeds them
« on: October 19, 2013, 11:55:45 am »
Two of my dwarves got stabbed by a kobold and now they are slowly dieing in their beds :( I have 45 dwarves and an average number of 15 idle dwarves, but no one seems to want to feed or water my wounded.

I tried disabling all jobs besides feeding on some of them, but those dwarves just hang out in the dining room with no job.

I also have a chief medical dwarf with a high diagnisis skill and another doctor who is good at setting bones. Neither of them has looked at either dwarf. In the medical screen it says that a diagnosis is requested, but they do nothing. I was making a hospital when the attack happened, so I had some of the essentials in there but not all of them. and since no hospital zone was designated, those two dwarves are in their own bed,s not in the hospital zone.

Are there any tricks I should try?

DF Gameplay Questions / Not the bees!
« on: October 16, 2013, 03:23:44 am »
Sorry for the reference.

I have made several bee boxes and my beekeeper has happily filled them with colonies. I have set some of the colonies to be harvested and the rest to not be harvested in order to have a replenishing source of colonies, but even thou all my hives are ready to be harvested, nothing is being done.

I have only one dwarf with beekeeper labour enabled (I read that having more can cause problems) and that dwarf has long periods of no job, but he is not harvesting the hives.

I have made also several green glass jugs for the task, slogging thru all the job cancellation messages because there was no sand. What is up with those by the way? Why does the game not get that the sand is being harvested and will be there in a minute?

Am I overlooknig something?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Difficulty getting Dwarf Fortress to Run
« on: March 05, 2010, 09:54:00 am »
If you suie the standard game, make sure the resolution you set fits into a grid. The nortmal size for a tile is 16*16 and 1100 is not divisible by 16. I am not sure if that could crash the game, but it might.

have you considered that it might not be DF causing the crash? For example, you might want to look into upgrading your windows. Service pack 3 is free and fixes a lot of issues XP has. it wont hurt you to upgrade that.

You can also try a different/older version of DF and see if the same thing happens.

Lastly, does DF write error logs? I am not sure but if it does they are the obvious place to look for clues. If theres no error logs there maybe the Windows log shows somethnig.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma Draining
« on: March 05, 2010, 09:41:18 am »
indeed, Magma cant be drianed off the map. All you can do to get rid of it (why you'd want to I have no idea ^^ ) is letting it evaporate.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Best way to improve happiness?
« on: March 02, 2010, 04:17:37 am »
If you have artifact furniture, put it up in  the dining room or another are all dwarves will visit sooner or later. They will get a happy thought from admiring the artifact. Giving them nice rooms also helps.

Very cool fort :)

Id like a dorf.
Name: Rav
Gender: whatever youve got

Rav is a thief dwarf who fled the mountainhomes, but is found out in the fort and made to fight in the pits. Maybe train me in wrestling a bit 1st to raise my survival chances. He should not get anything more then token armor and base level wepaons thou, the good stuff is for the knights after all.
