DF Gameplay Questions / Squad room for ranged

So I've always put armor stands/weapon racks in all barracks including ranged.  And then I assign each individual range as well.  I was reading a post yesterday (it links to a Wiki page on how to properly get marksdwarfs training) and it said do not put stands/racks; just to use the ranges.  I've done that and none of my ranged guys will start training.

Yes...they are set to Active/Training in alerts
Yes...I've adjusted the min/max to "1" for ranged units
Yes...each individual Archery Target is set up; has the correct direction; and assigned to the squad.
Yes...there are quivers, crossbows and bolts.

So is the Wiki wrong?  Do you have to have stands/racks and make a double barracks (like I've always done before)?

DF Gameplay Questions / Engraving stone

A question on engraving pillars/walls...

Sometimes my pillar has to be where some ore or lignite is that I want/need.  I've tried using "raw stone" and also "stone blocks" to rebuild the pillars but I am unable to engrave them.  Is there a way around this to not lose the pillar/engraving surface without leaving the ore/coal behind?

So I read the wiki but am curious..

1. It takes "years" to actually "tame" a creature?
2. Are there any special steps to "increase/improve" training?
3. Part of #2, is there a point to remove the creature from the cage and put on a rope (and does this improve anything?)
4. I guess it's important to somehow get them out of cages to breed in order to produce tame offspring (wiki says they can't breed in cages)...so that's why #3 is important I suppose...

Thanks for any help...I don't want wild beasties roaming my fortress but it would be nice to tame them to the point I can breed them for meat/leather/war training depending on the creature.

I saw there was a way to set a workshop order (using DF Hack I assume) to encrust a specific item type with cut gems.  However, the "details" options once you choose an "encrusting" job is the type of design...but I definitely saw the LP player choose a specific item type and was able to set workflow orders for that on repeat.  Any idea how to actually do that to set it up?

For the newer objects in game....books, pages, etc, they will store in a coffer in a library area.

Prior to setting up a library, where would you be able to store these items?  The only object I see if Codexes in the Finished Goods menu.

I have a horrible time with animals.  I can pen them I know but some (like cats) I like free run for vermin.  Unfortunately they tend to venture outside and even if I set doors...those sneaky buggers sit by the door til an unsuspecting dwarf opens it and they scoot outside and they complain they can't get back in.  So is there a setting to keep them inside?

Is this possible?  I use the same interface as melting ice in a waterskin but don't get a "melt" option for the snow.

DF General Discussion / Dwarf Fortress and CPU Processors

Hey guys, I know there has been a lot of talk about optimizing being needing to push back the FPS death we all seem to run into.  Anyway, I was looking at a possible new CPU today and honestly I guess I'm becoming the "old guy" that can't keep up with all the new tech (Never thought that would happen honestly but oh well).

So my current rig has an AMD A8-3820 process, runs about 2.5GHz and I found a newer computer with an Intel i3-4130 processor pushing about 3.4GHz.

I'm just curious, for DF in particular and gaming in general would this be worth the outlay of cash (it's on clearance so it's not a huge hit) to see a generalized improvement in gaming ability or not really worth the money for what it can do?

Is it normal once you build a temple and/or inn that all work ceases in your fortress?  I have literally 80% of my dwarfs just sitting around with jobs piling up.

So I've played Fortress mode for a long while.  I tried Adventure once when I first got DF and failed miserably as I knew nothing about the game (in any mode).  So I decided to try my hand again yesterday.  Man, I can't figure out how to do ANYTHING!  Even following the Wiki...I died within 2 minutes of walking out my front door and I can't even tell what anything is in the game.  I watched an LP and it seemed the guy doing it found a "keep" where he was able to pilfer all kinds of gear within seconds...it seems I'm in a hamlet and my house is the only place in town and had nothing in it.

Any pointers or tips to get someone started in this Mode?   :-X

If you buy these, live, from elves can you then breed and harvest for shells?

I know the ones you bring with you cannot be harvested.  Never saw elves bring them before so wanted to check.  And to confirm, these are alive, in cages and listed as Tame.  So, not already food.

So I got the latest LNP which has been cleared by PE.  First caravan arrived fine.  Second and Third caravans, I get the notification but they are nowhere to be seen or found.  Nothing on units screen as far as merchants/bodyguards/animals...yet after time passes, I get the "caravan leaving" notice.  Is this still an issue?  BTW, new start on this version so nothing worrysome about a prior version import.

Not sure if this still works...saw it on a Let's Play.

Top Z-Level (Ground Floor)

This is what it looks like in the LP.  So when an enemy is spotted you can go do the Hatch Covers and forbid/lock them.  They can't come down the outer ramp to get inside your fortress.  (Granted building destroyers and all...I know).  Now this worked in the LP but I had a kobold thief that got inside my fortress and none of the Hatch Covers said they were out of my control...Locked them down and the kobold immediately went through them anyway...

Have I set something up wrong?
It is because he was inside and not outside?
