DF Gameplay Questions / Artifacts

So artifacts....sell them for a big haul?  Keep for nobles?  Place at random for all dwarfs to admire?

What are "candy cloaks"?

How do I tell if clothes need replacing?

DF Gameplay Questions / Using Manager
« on: September 04, 2014, 07:23:15 pm »
So, the first question...do you use it and should I?

What are pros and cons of a manager that you have found.  No sense in me reinventing the wheel..lol.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Best warriors are female?

No, just make sure the females in your army aren't able to have kids. Then it doesn't matter.
How do you stop relationships and baby making?  LOL

DF Gameplay Questions / Best warriors are female?
« on: September 04, 2014, 04:36:28 pm »
So since I've returned to DF, I've seen many posts about not using females in the military.  Carrying babies into combat, losing a baby in combat, etc...but the other thing I've noticed is that when my migrants arrive...the vast majority of migrants that have military skills of note...are female.  Meaning I have to conscript lesser able males due to sex restrictions only.

This should be good...haven't seen this before.  The kid has claimed the craftsdwarf shop.  Talk about "Bring your kid to work day".  LOL

DF Gameplay Questions / Minecart dumping query
« on: September 03, 2014, 07:56:03 pm »
So I'm trying to streamline my stone movement to my forge area and also to my masonry shops.  Here's the question...

What I want to do is have three or four z-levels for stone mining and then have my shop areas located below those floors (so mining on z-levels 13-16 with masonry on 17 and forges on 18).

The goal is to have only the stone on 13 go to the minecart on 13; stone on 14 to a cart on 14, etc...all going to the same mine shaft.  I'll have one shaft for regular stone and a second shaft to the forge floor for metals.

So, how do I limit the stone to only come from that floor?  I don't want my dwarfs hauling up or down 3-4 levels if I can avoid it (time issues and all..lol).

I'm thinking a dump pile, then marking all the stone for that floor to be dumped.  Then reclaiming the stone and cancelling the dump spot on that floor.  Not sure if that will work though.  And also, would I be able to have 2-3 dumps working simultaneously.

Or just easier to put multiple 12x12 stone stockpiles and then have another stockpile near the minecart to collect from those only?  My concern here while this would work, is that my dwarfs will still haul stone up or down levels even when there is a pile on their floor.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Meager and Decent

OK.  He's just mayor, not king..lol.  I smoothed about five spots on his wall and it went up.  Now to do the same for his dining and armory.

DF Gameplay Questions / Meager and Decent
« on: September 03, 2014, 01:29:04 pm »
Is there a hard and fast rule on what it takes to make a room move from meager to decent and then on to higher levels?

Just getting my first "noble" with a mayor.  I've given him a three room suite..a 5x5 bedroom with bed, cabinet and two coffers; a 5x5 dining room and a 3x5 armory.  Still shows up as "meager" and he wants "decent".  I've met his mandate, I've got the required furniture.  I haven't smoothed or engraved the walls yet...that's next on the list.

Just wondering as I move forward if there is a hard and fast description somewhere on what makes a room meet a certain criteria.

Set a pasture with i and assign any animal you think might eat grass to it. If you have big animals that you think might need a lot of food or lots of various kinds of animal it will have to be a big pasture, or multiple.

I think grazing pets owned by a dwarf that likes them may need to be fed but I'm not sure. I've seen the message before too but no idea what it's from.
Got that...but a Tiger is NOT a grazing animal and my query was specific to Tigers.

Not meaning to ressurect a post but this one popped up on my search.

Here's the wiki on Tigers...http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Tiger

Note that it contradicts the first post that Tigers need to eat.  However, in my health screen it shows my Tiger is starving.  I have him penned...but what/how do I feed him?

I haven't been able to atom smash any of my sieges...but when I turtle they hang around the map for a while and then leave.  It may, or may not, be in time for your next migrant wave.  Think long term...just go back to normal business closed up inside and let them wander around aimlessly.
