SMR works for any material like aquifers do for water, you can put an infinite amount of stuff in them, and nothing will happen.

I'm with werdna, just use marksdwarves, they train fast and easy, without the need for danger rooms, assuming you're not on an evil biome, and you don't need to micro manage them as badly as a real military. significantly reduce needs for metal (Virtually nonexistent, but for Silver Bolts), ease of replacement, AND fast training cycle? I'll take 20 thanks.

[Insert my usual rant about how iron isn't necessary, and further exposition as to my confusion as to why this metal even matters here.]

After seeing yet another "Why Can'T I find any Iron" thread, I've decided that my monstrous machine fort will not use any iron, even though I think I have some, simply out of spite.

I keep mine in a small communal meeting area, which is problematic for tantrum spirals, but overall not that bad for keeping the room amazing. Their living quarters tend to be decadent, even for haulers, decent or better, at the very least.

Mine varies depending on where I am, But for the most part it's utilitarian, with building only every couple levels to allow for water/magma/power channels.

Sadly I got rid of the map after a building destroyer destroyed a control valve and my FPS exploded. I'm trying to rebuild it on a new map with some modifications to make it more FPS friendly though. I'll post a thread about it when I'm done.

It's really just an expansion on basic power infrastructure and using fluids for repeaters. it's just explaining how I put all the pieces together that's hard. you should be able to figure it out by looking at what's already in the wiki.

I use a magma pump to push pressure plates, and depending on what other pressureplates/levers are activated power is directed to different parts of the fort.

For example the lever to engage lockdown mode also engages a gear to provide power to other things, and then those things wait for the final gear to be put in place by more stuff.

It's kind of complicated and I used like, 6 bajillion gears, and sometimes things go horribly wrong, which is why I prefer it to a military.

I learned that Hunters make good Captains of the guard, since they're out hunting so much, they don't form strong bonds with anyone, so they tend to emotionally survive the tantrum spiral.

Whether they survive the dwarves is another matter...

It's not like Iron is more important than any other metal, sure it makes better armor, but copper seems more common, by a longshot, and so Bronze armor may be a possibility. For Magma Safe stuff there's usually plenty of stones that will work.

I wish dwarves in cages didn't need to eat, then you could make a cool stasis chamber by Cave-capsuling some dwarves in cage traps and then placing them in a Vault, then sealing it. When the migrants come next season they pull the lever to thaw the elders out of hibernation and rebuild the fort
