DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Millenium Fortress
« on: May 03, 2011, 03:59:10 pm »
Something I'd thought of for a generation capsule fort I'd been working on in theory was to just have multiple layers, the starting seven start on the lowest, most well equipped layer, and each wave of immigrants has to slowly percolate downward, ensuring that only useful dwarves are introduced into the main population. males and Females would have separate quarters to prevent marriage and babies, and the doors to the next lowest level only unlock every 5 years. That's enough time to conventionally train them as a militia, or to get them to a useful specialization at a respectable level, ensuring the lowest areas are lavishly furnished. I need to think of a good way to thin the herd though, cull the weak and only allow the strong to survive. Once they get to the middle (of three) areas I can't think of a way to do so nicely, aside from just looking for all the weak and stupid ones who survived the first level and changing their burrow to the magma chamber.

Eugenics,  Needless Cruelty, Class Struggle, Sounds dwarfy to me.

This discussion of cages rekindled the idea of dwarven stasis, only to crush it again when I remembered caged dwarves need food :C

It just hit the end of the world counter, we don't know.

Most of our animals died in the floods from the poorly engineered waterlocks that first spring, so after the last pet died we didn't have animals either, we had to send teh scouts to try and find meat on the cavern floors.

I accidently started a fort only a year before the end of the world, and then all news from the mountainhome ceased, and the attacks ceased, out of terror my dwarves dug beneath the river at the base of their canyon through the winter ice and built an arcology to repopulate the dwarven race.

It was tough at first. endless labor, low food and water, fewer supplies, we completely lost the ability to work with metal, as we never got an anvil. But we endured, for over 20 years they endured and grew until the First Generation of the new Dwarves had never even seen the surface, nevermind the sun. We'd lost All but a few plant types to a failure of the waterlocks restraining the river for irrigation of new plots. Gone were the days of metal armor, my military strode forth into the dark  caverns with Crossbows and the Blue Cloth Regalia of their people. We'd captured enough spider silk to make their armor out of the best we could, and had a mushroom farm for wood. It was slow, and the scouts were a very small, but elite contingent. we could not afford to lose able bodied Dwarves senselessly.

Life before the arcology faded into legend, there was nothing above, aside from the water reactors Below there was the danger of the caverns, Forgotten beasts roaming the floor while the stalactite city above thrived, Prospered Even. Each resident had fine rooms, food was plentiful and good. and the orbital defenses, along with the scouts kept the caverns relatively safe.

Repeating training wooden Warhammers? break every bone slowly as you milk the blood from their bodies?

Why not just have a ductwork level beneath/above each level of fortress to save on pumps?

Hypothetically the dwarfiest mechanism for defense would to be able to seal and magma-flood individual areas of your fortress on command, then drain it to allow goblinite/that indestructible -Pig Tail Sock- to be recovered.

My personal favorite? The time I covered the map with Weapon traps with superior quality mechanisms. and each trap had 1 wooden spike in it.

Ah well. It seemed like a marginally less than terrible idea at the time.

maybe once they've graduated from training spear rooms we'll throw them against ballistae

I was thinking pults, But I'd upgrade to untipped ballistae eventually.I don't need to worry about veterans, since I never have any. I typically have no military to speak of and just leave the grinders and Goblinite refinery running constantly

and I know the training spears would probably be more efficient, this is just far dwarfier in my mind because it's less efficient, more deadly, and serves no real purpose.

now I know the wooden training spears trick, but could you use maybe a battery of siege engines along two walls do you think? They're notoriously inaccurate, but Ith skilled enough operators I was thinking it'd be possible to use them instead of spikes.

Granted, this sounds more lethal, but that's part of the fun I guess. I'll have to try it once I'm not frantically finishing end-of-semester work.

stupid question, do they have access to where you're building the new tunnel? I've done things like that only to realize that they can't actually reach the new stairway *facepalm*
