I prefer hammers because the vast majority of my army, should I have one, is Marksdwarves and somewhere sequestered in the bowels of the trade district is a bone carver cranking out *Bone Bolt* stacks. Armor obviously makes them less useful, so I just call out the hammerdwarves to save the day if all else fails.

I find lava rain works well. link it up to a pump system and you're good to go! gets rid of all that icky copper for you too, leaving only the precious goblinite behind.

an interesting inversion, I think, is a dwarf that is legendary in all combat skills. decked in the best armor you can make, weilding the best weapons, and dispatched alone into combat situations, backed up by a hail of -bone bolt- fire. equip the best weapon for the situation and go to town.

I like Hammers, best against armored opponents, which are the only things that survive traps anyways.

I like the scarcity, it brings us back to the good old days where you locked your military in the armory for YEARS before you even THOUGHT about letting them finish off those goblins, slowly training them into the pinnacle of dwarven Warriorhood when they are given their suit of +Steel Armor+

If you bothered with a military at all, instead of relying on wit and and clever traps to survive the endless hordes.
