DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Exotic weapons and Dwarves

They can't be wielded by any dwarf. Some human weapons can, but not human two-handed weapons.

At the same time, a monomolecular (adamantine might as well be) blade doesn't need any mass, because it will literally slip in between the enemy's molecules and sever the bonds tying them together.

The only documentaries I really enjoy are nature ones - especially David Attenborough's.

*killer whale goes CHOMP!*

And yes, Carl Sagan was a brilliant writer. I miss him too. :(

It's spelt Spaniard, so you know.

DF Modding / Reducing Mineral Amounts
« on: September 18, 2010, 09:31:26 am »
I'm starting to get annoyed at the sheer amount of ore and useless other stones I find in my layer stones. Is there a mod out there (or is someone willing to make one) that will result in less minerals?

I'm aiming for more than 40d, but enough to dig out an 11x11 area without striking something.

I'm sad that I'm either paying way too much for a new computer getting a prebuilt or waiting another couple of weeks to get parts assembled by one of the Bay12ers.

:(

Oh, Australia...

Yeah, nevermind. I couldn't use your silly kangaroo dollars anyhow.

Find or make a technophile friend locally, or a small computer repair shop and ask if they'd do an assembly.

Sorry, that's outdated - I'm in Cambodia, which uses US currency. So I can do a deal with you! :D

Toonyman (and anyone else), once my business is sorted, feel free to hijack this thread and talk about computer specs-related stuff.

Will this computer be a custom built or a prebuilt?
What will you be using this computer for the most?
What kind of games will you be playing on it if you are using it for gaming

unless you have a specific need for it there's no need for more than 4gigs of ram, And an i7 for most people is entirely overkill, And if you will be using it as a heavy gaming machine than a 5670 probably won't cut it.

It's a prebuilt from a store. I'll probably spend most of my time playing either DF or games off Steam (looking at TF2, Audiosurf and the L4D series in particular).

Nikov, thanks for offering. I'm sort of worried about sending valuable computer parts halfway around the world, though.

I'll think about using this as a bluprint and then assembling it myself (or paying Nikov to).

Actual food as in PLUMP HELMETS.

Otherwise you have to go running around outside, like a bunch of elves.

General Discussion / Computer Specs
« on: September 18, 2010, 01:31:05 am »
I'm getting a new computer soon, and I'm interested in opinions on whether I should look for something better or go with this.

Intel Core i7-920 processor
8GB DDR3 memory
1TB SATA storage
ATI Radeon HD 5670 1GB graphics card
Windows 7 Premium 64-bit

I'm paying US$1355 for this (although my parents are paying for $800). Thoughts?

removing the site.dat file from your save should remove the site.

I want to be able to name my military squads, for frick's sake. "THE PAPER DEFENSES" ISN'T IRONICALLY FUNNY, IT'S STUPID.

Also naming dorfs would be nice. And getting rid of the infernally long names that don't fit on the screen.
Also nicknames... confuse a lot of things when you can't id your dorfs easily.

If anything, the dwarves should get a short nickname when they get good at stuff instead of annoyingly long ones.

Already implemented. u-v-y-c

I will not embark without a completely flat site.

Ever.

It's bad. Search manually instead - on a Smaller region, I can find a suitable site within 2 world gens and about 15 minutes of hunting.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: September 17, 2010, 12:21:38 pm »
On the opposite end to the above, I'm starting a fortress, and I'm going to stick with it, damn it!

It's a completely flat site, Untamed Wilds Tropical Broadleaf forest (elephants!). 41 z-levels deep. Pertinent data from prospector:

65 faint yellow diamond
85 ruby
92 sapphire
690 native platinum
762 bismuthinite
3000+ limestone
3400~ bituminous coal
3400~ lignite
2800~ hematite
3000~ limonite
14000~ magnetite (!!)
6800~ native silver
15000~ galena (!)
3500~ malachite
13000~ native gold (!)
14000~ tetrahedrite
1584 cotton candy (2 safe veins to boot)

Along with nearly 40 000 olivine. I'm thinking of building two enormous towers out of the gold and silver (metal, naturally), then paving over the rest of my fort with olivine. It'll hide the vomit, after all.
