Either I've lost my mojo, or this world has some powerful night creatures. I'm trying to train up an adventurer to go clean out the hoards of goblins in my abandoned fortress. I keep trying to kill night creatures so I can convince some chumps to come with me, but I keep getting insta-killed.

I'm reclaiming Swordhall. The place is infested with friendly goblins and humans, who were both sieging me when my strength broke. These Friends include the human General. I will find a way to trap and torture him.
I have about 200 corpses that need buried. Their ghosts are battering my dwarfs. I never realized that "battering" included ripping people limbs off. But then again, this is DF, so I should have assumed so.

I got it. Below HFS is the remains of the other worlds you've generated. After you moved on, they were overrun by demons, who killed everyone and covered everything in slade. Then, over a very long period of time, the new world developed on top of the slade.

My strength broke during two simultaneous sieges (according to Legends, the goblins got the win, not the humans). I went back to look through my accomplishments, and I happened to come across the queen of the Enchanted Canyons, and noticed she'd killed 63 elves. I guess she was an adventurer, since she doesn't appear to have ever been involved in an invasion. I can't wait to have her come to my fortress when I reclaim!
