One time I chased a couple mountain goats down and killed them.  I didn't feel too good about that, even though I've seen plenty of mountain goat attacks in other adventures.

Haus Party, I do not believe you did- unless it was modded, dwarves don't use "untoward" language when naming fortresses.

You might have customized it, I guess.
Most of the forum is immature enough to have done so.

I don't know where people get that impression. If anyone thinks this forum is bad, check out Facepunch, the Steam forums, the Haven and Hearth forums, and actually just about any forum.

B12 remains a generally good place.

Well, he didn't say we were immature... just immature enough8)

I just had a similar situation (Retired adventurer, and my next adventurer got attacked by him), but mine went slightly differently:  The first one called me out, but I ignored him and walked in a different direction.  I then killed the king, which of course caused everyone to attack me... or so I thought, at first.  Soon, I realized that the citizens were not only fighting me, but also eachother.  Once I died, the violent riot kept going on.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well, that didn't work out well... she did manage to make it home alive, but she took the wrong route, avoiding the cave-in trap.  Bronzy followed her to the fortress, fought some merchants' bodyguards for a while, somehow got into the fortress, and started fighting with my four soldiers.  I decided to stop trying to save the fortress, and just let Fun happen.... only it didn't.  This particular Bronze Colossus seems to be incapable of killing anything.  BORING.

Hm... I tried undesignating the stockpile, but it didn't seem to have any effect.  Also, I think I tried it once before I made the stockpile and had the same problem.

Hi!

Nothing was stopping him from using the (clear diamonds) or (blue diamonds) I imported...

In that case, I think that dwarf really hated you. I mean, placing that image there and not actually using diamonds is really a nasty way to say "I could use diamonds, but I won't.". I wonder if that dwarf was in a grudge state against the player :) :) :)

Deathworks

Maybe he was just too lazy to walk over to the gem stockpile, and didn't think you'd know the difference.

DF Gameplay Questions / Can't assign traded weapons
« on: June 08, 2010, 04:07:17 pm »
I thought I'd pretty much figured out the military, but now I have a problem.  I've recently acquired some higher quality weapons from caravans.  Even though I know I have them, and can see them sitting in the stockpile, they don't show up on the military screen when I try to equip my soldiers.  The only weapons that show up are a few copper weapons, plus some wooden weapons that I assume are in the caverns somewhere.  Is this a common problem?

I've been working on a cave-in trap, made to terminate the Bronze Colossus known to live in the cave nearby.  I thought I'd completed it, so I drafted Kivish Patternedpulley, a trader (I already had a much better one), made her a militia captain, and sent her into the caves, to lure the Colossus into the trap.  Once she got down to his lair (deep in the cavern) and he noticed her, I ordered her to run away toward the trap.  Instead, she ran toward Bronzy, and he started pummeling her.
I quickly gave up on the situation and started tending to my other dwarfs' needs.  After a couple minutes, I noticed Captain Kivish was still alive, albeit with lots of gruesome wounds.  I decided to disband her squad (which consisted only of her).  She started to run away, but she went in the wrong direction, and now she's cornered and being terrorized again.  Interestingly, she's now a Legendary fighter and wrestler...  :o I really hope she can make it home alive.

DF General Discussion / Interpreting Legends Mode
« on: June 05, 2010, 07:32:38 pm »
Whenever I read through Legends mode, I like to read the descriptions of the gods, titans, demons, and forgotten beasts, and imagine the mythology surrounding them.  It helps make every world and civilization a little more unique.  Here's an example of a pantheon from "The Eternal World".

Torish Shockedknives, dwarven god of chaos, war, and fortresses.
Lurit, mountain goat god of volcanoes and mountains.
Tobul, dwarven goddess of minerals.
Shin, dwarven god of jewels and wealth.
Ono, cave swallow god of weather, sky, sun, fire, and metals.
Angzak Newbud, dwarven goddess of rebirth, death, suicide and murder.
Lor the Lunches of Joking, dwarven goddess of labor, crafts, and dreams.
Ezum, dwarven god of laws, justice, and discipline..
Omtal, dwarven god of freedom.

(There's also a god of persuasion, but who cares?)

I imagine dwarven legends going something like this:
Lurit and Ono were the first beings in the universe, and created the world together.  Ono created the elves and humans, and Lurit created the dwarves.  After a while, they grew bored with their creations, and decided that they needed more personality.  To make this happen, they created and sent down three new gods to influence them:  Torish Shockedknives, Lor the Lunches of Joking, and Ezum.  Ezum favored the humans, and influenced them the most.  Similarly, Lor favored the dwarves.  Torish, the most powerful of the 3, was left with the elves.  However, at some point, he got a grudge against the dwarves.  He forced the elves to become as nondwarvenly as possible, and then decided he would make dwarf life miserable.  First, he he created Angzak Newbud, who introduced mortality and violence to all the races of the world, except for the ones that Torish favored.  He then created the goblins, who would wage war on the dwarves, and the kobolds, who would steal the dwarves' property out of spite.
Lor the Lunches of Joking responded by creating Tobul and Shin, who blessed the dwarves with a special talent for mining.  However, Torish is very powerful, and he still can create chaos for the dwarves by having animals, megabeasts, and other monsters attack them randomly.  This violence forces them to live in fortresses.  I imagine it's also his fault that they're alcohol dependent.
Omtal exists as a messianic figure, who will someday free the dwarves from Torish.

So, what sorts of stories does your Legends mode tell about the gods?

Are you sure the booze isn't forbidden or lost in a pathfinding bermuda triangle? Dorfs tend to go thirsty before drinking, but usually not to death.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't.  I can't verify for sure, though, since I decided to abandon.   :-[

Thanks for the tip!
The dwarfs aren't suffering from a lack of drinks, they're just doing that thing where they don't bother to drink.   ::)  My refuse pile is filling up with corpses.

Oh, another thing I forgot to mention:  Due to my kaolinite Trade Depot, I keep thinking there's been some sort of Elf bloodbath.  I'm always bummed when I realize that there hasn't been (Yet).

I'm working on my first fortress in a month or so.  Unfortunately, the river that the embark screen promised is frozen year-round, so my farmer isn't doing so well...
Anyway, pretty much everything is going normally.  Everyone is dying of thirst.
