I always saw the "no construction engravings" thing as an incentive to live underground.  Is this not an intended metagame directive?

really? I've been getting that one for a while.  Not all demons do it but if you are attentive in the legends it should only take a couple worldgens to get your crazy socialite demon.

The world is actually quite small, and the rocs are, if I remember correctly, the only megabeasts still alive in it.  I'm currently hoping to start a roc farm at some point... although I am not sure how to capture them yet.

In any case, the earth has been struck, so it is only a matter of time before the rocs show up.  When it happens, I will be sure to mention it.

I was honestly shocked when I finally got that roc from worldgen.  I was pretty sure it wasn't in for this release, but I guess its just rare?  I was equally surprised the two rocs decided to live in the same cave in the first place.  I was under the impression that megabeasts preferred solitary sleeping arrangements, but, well, there you have it.

Why megabeasts doesn't reproduce yet? I thought Dragons and hydras were waiting for eggs. Do you plan to change this soon?

It's in, just SUPER rare.

DF General Discussion / Megabeast Offspring!
« on: February 28, 2011, 09:02:25 pm »
After several hundred small world generations, I have finally gotten megabeasts with offspring. A pair of Rocs took up residence in the same cave, and after 311 years, there is a baby Roc, wreaking havoc in the countryside.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If you want to check it out yourself, I uploaded the save.

How many of you have managed to get megabeast offspring?

I agree about the military being the biggest hurdle. It isn't hopeless though. The wiki has some very good tutorials that can help with partly much any aspect of the game, plus, if you REALLY get stuck, the forums are usually pretty friendly and helpful.

I say go for 0.31.19

Are you planning on ever implementing browsing animals? Right now all herbivores are grazers, but lots of animals eat basically only shrubs and trees.

If you read through the raw entries on actual browsing animals (giraffes and the like) there are notes from Toady about browsing.  Presumably this means he wants to include it at some point, but it is unlikely to occur before multi-tile vegetation gets some attention.

Remember that not all of these things are mutually exclusive.  Toady seems to be doing a decent job at the balancing act.  I think we can all agree that DF needs more work :)

The FPS issues with items on the map are somewhat more troubling.  Could be caused by rotting calculations, or if there is something strange with stockpile code.

...I still can't figure out how to bejewel weapons and armor, but its easy to accidentally encrust millstones with rubies.
While slightly off-topic, I am fairly certain there is no way to do this.  Encrusted weapons and armor show up through trade and in adventure mode though.

There is one in every forum.
Oh... oh god... achievements... what a pointless game addition, and how corrupting an influence on the player base.

How about flash-events!  "Press 'x' for the magma scorpions to NOT attack your booze stockpile!"

But in all seriousness I can't think of anything Toady would actually implement that I don't want (not purposeful anyway).

So, I'm at my parents' house for spring break (woo!) and confined to this crappy old mac.  No intel processor, so I am forced to play older versions of DF.

Time for a DF nostalgia trip.  Just generated myself a world, and it is time to crank up the site finder (remember finding sites? those were the days!) and look for... a magma pipe I guess?  Dwarves like magma right?

It is dawning on me how different df2010 is from 40d.

There does seem to be a group of people who think that not using tilesets or utilities makes them somehow better, and argue furiously that these things are pointless.  Really I don't understand the mindset.  It is pretty clear that dwarf therapist does a very good job of presenting otherwise obscured information.  Its fine to like using ASCII tiles or the default job interface, but trying to argue it is better is very strange.

Anyway, the UI debate shouldn't be seen as "pro-UI" vs "anti-UI" because I think we can all agree that intuitive user interface is in general a good thing (even pro- and anti-mouse is silly because nobody is talking about removing keyboard functions).  It is just a question of priority.  Toady avoids UI changes because, if I remember correctly, he worries about moving everything to a system that needs to be totally overhauled because of some future functionality.  UI improvements mid-development can really turn into a time-waster when there is a chance you will just be throwing them away.

The question here is if there is a system for these things that would universally work, be intuitive, and wouldn't need updating when new features are added.  The question of what to update is important as well.  Toady is, as is often pointed out, only one guy, so he can only work on one ting at a time, and in the end, all of our debates and questions are really about what is highest priority.

If you type "rush puddle" into youtube you get some pretty amazing videos of people on ATVs hydroplaning across lakes.  Doesn't look real at all, but there are so MANY of them...

Toady you planned for release 2 of the current arc "Work with 3D mineral veins and mine maps" does this include 3D Stone-blobs? Like microline being more a spheric inclusion then a circle-ish sheet in the surrounding stone.
Oh good.  More microline.
