Hate to burst the bubble chaps but the best I've done even on my 64-bit system is 2010 years on a large map.  Memory usage was reeeeeally tight (something like 1.8G) - the issue being that while my computer might be able to run in 64-bits, DF is 32-bit.

I can't see getting to year 10k without gearing down to at the very least a medium map.

Embark -> Cave found -> No visible beasties -> Dead troglodytes and mole rats slowly fill my units screen -> Suddenly, bronze colossus -> watch my dwarves die of thirst trying to combat the thing

The thing is, regardless of wether it fits in with the world and immersion or not if it's harming the game experience it shouldn't be there. Personally I was annoied because it means I get to know each one of my dwarves less and having grandmaster migrants lessens that feeling of accomplishment when you train a dwarf yourself.
This.

Hmm....I wonder why I always get eagles...

So...is anyone else getting a LOT of engravings of various humans taming giant eagles?  Every fort I start in every world ends up with like a million of the bloody things.

My current master engraver is plastering them everywhere and doesn't have a preference for giant eagles or anything.  Perhaps it is just a very common vent from worldgen history or something.  I have to say I wold much rather see some engravings of demons, titans, dragons, and bronze collossi beating on eachother (the legends of my world includes some pretty impressive battles of that nature).

My other thought is that somewhere in the game files "tamed a giant eagle" is given WAY too high of an importance setting or something.

Anywho - anyone else getting these?

QFT. That is a sweet story. Now we have a way to get poison coverings!
Yeah - but I suspect it only works if you have a forgotten beast with poisonous blood with a high freezing point.  Haven't been able to replicate it again.

I was attacked quite early (12 dwarves) by a forgotten beast with poison blood, the only weapon available being an artifact golden sword (fuck yeah) made only a month or so earlier.  With no military to speak of I drafted the carpenter and told them to attack the thing, and was quite successful since the beast seemed so intent on killing my masons and miners slowly and painfully that it failed to notice its thorax being hacked off.

-several years pass-

The carpenter with the golden sword is now the commander to my army, and has racked up a suspiciously large number of kills compared to her comrades - especially since a gold sword should kind of suck.  I finally notice during an encounter with a giant leopard that the leopard is paralyzed.  Further inspection shows me that the golden sword is covered in "frozen forgotten beast extract" and is paralyzing everything it hits extremely effectively.

Hey there - I would like to help the project in regards to sprite art if you're still looking for help with that.  This was pretty fun to make, and I think I would like to do some more sprite work.  Send me a PM and let me know.

deep down farms are cooler anyway, no pumps needed
Hear Hear!

Real Dorfs dig down to the caverns and wall off some muddy floor on embark.  I don't care what Toady says - the irrigation "bug" thing is a feature.  Fending off hordes of zombie tiger men while paging through job cancellations caused by a rampaging elk bird are what lets you know you're alive!

DF General Discussion / YOU STUPID ELK BIRDS!
« on: April 09, 2010, 03:12:21 am »
Alright, am I totally insane, or do elk birds target anyone of the smithing profession and flee from everyone else?  I've had 2 weaponsmiths killed, an armorsmith seriously injured, and a furnace operator mildly wounded by this one bird, but it runs from my military and I can't seem to kill it.  none of my other dwarves have even been so much as scratched by the thing.

Am I insane?  Because this is an awfully maddening set of conincidences if this isn't a feature...

It's torture. I am moving on the 1st of April. And probably won't have internet for atleast 1-2 weeks.
Friend with the internet and a memory stick.  Else, you shall surely go insane.

This is a very fine forum thread.  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.  On the item is an image of a thread in forum.  The item menaces with spikes of tautology.
On the item is an image of a toad and humans in raw adamantine.  The toad is speaking with the humans.  The humans are making a plaintive gesture.
On the item is an image of a foot and a forum in elephant ivory.  The foot is striking a menacing pose.
On the item is an image of a toad and bugs in dwarf leather.  The toad is surrounded by the bugs.  The toad is in the fetal position.
