General Discussion / Re: Cartoon/Western Animation Thread.
« on: November 16, 2021, 12:50:49 pm »
Could've sworn I've seen Arcane being talked about around here somewhere. Guess my mind is going loopy lately :V

Anyways, Arcane, the League of Legends based animated series on Netflix. First off, no need to be familiar with LoL in any way, shape or form. The story is fairly self contained and can easily be an introduction to the lore of the games. You'll get a kick out of recognizing some things when they're introduced but it's in no way mandatory (also fuck the fact that english subs only offer closed captions which will spoil certain introductions a bit)

What the show is essentially is an origin story of multiple champions from the game, shows who they are, where they come from and how they relate to other champions. All of that is packed in a rather compelling story of multiple characters and factions, all with their own motivations and goals even if they aren't terribly new or complex, they mesh together very well to create an interesting story that moves along at a nice pace.

Now, the biggest thing, for me at least, is the visuals, I'm not sure what their exact approach is, but I'm suspecting a mash up of 2d and 3d, but it's done so seamlessly that it's hard to tell most of the time that it isn't hand painted. The style they've went for as well is brilliant, just the right amount of stylized and realistic proportions. Seriously, if for no other reason than to enjoy well made animation, it's well worth a watch.

I find it extremely funny tho, how a person whose only claim to fame is that they're good at running and getting hit over the head holds any authority on fucking anything, let alone shit like health and vaccination.

Cigarettes can't ignite petrol tho, they don't burn hot enough.

General Discussion / Re: The Movie Discussion Thread!
« on: November 02, 2021, 01:14:29 pm »
Saw the movie too. Didn't particularly enjoy it beyond the visuals, and I've loved the book a few years back when I read it.

It felt all over the place, mood was nice, but a lot of the time I was put off by the music, either it's not there, or it's so fucking loud and overbearing that you can't pay attention to what's happening in the scene itself. As said before, fight scenes were rather shit, they do a nice setup with the training at the start, but afterwards it just looked like regular swordfighting/brawling. Also the whole talking up of Gurney as a tough bastard didn't really mean anything in the end? Dude just charges in and dies without doing sweet fuck all. At least Idaho had his big fight with the Sardaukar to show that he's a genuine threat.

Overall, the whole thing felt like an overly long chore than an adaptation of a book that was fairly enjoyable to read. There's being purposefully slow to build mood and atmosphere and then there's stretching shit and throwing in stuff that isn't important to balloon the movie to a stupid length while not being able to tell the full story.

So a fairly big pass from me, don't see myself looking forward to the sequel, much better to go back and read the books again imo

the fuckers have removed the 'restore previous session' button for some reason, tho I doubt that would've helped much.

I thought that too actually, but they actually just hid it. If you open that drop down menu, you'll see your usual options. One of them is history. If you click history, it will open another drop-down menu and one of the options in it is the old "restore previous session" button.

The initial knee-jerk reaction is of course to be pissed at an unnecessary UI change, but it's not bad once you get used to it. It's a function you won't be using that often so it makes sense to bury it a little. History is also a reasonable location to place it in. It was the first place I checked when I noticed the button was missing.

First place I looked, wasn't there. It has recently closed tabs/windows but that only works for the current session by the looks of it, and only for stuff that was actually closed while the browser was running. No restore previous session button to be found anywhere.

Anyways, all moot, there's a reason it's in the mildly upset thread because I just can't be bothered too much by it anymore. It happened several times already, it'll probably happen several more. Most of it was random music I found anyways, some of it will be missed, some of it won't because I can't even remember what it was :V

It's been a long time coming I guess, but it happened again. Lost all of my fucking tabs. Firefox froze for whatever reason and I killed the process and started it again, instead of my myriad tabs I'm greeted by a blank canvas. Super helpfully too, the fuckers have removed the 'restore previous session' button for some reason, tho I doubt that would've helped much.

Oh well, time to start accruing that shit all over again :I

Dunno, what kept driving me forward was mostly the exploration and getting new stuff. Now this is good for one playtrough for the most part, mine took some 16ish hours.Might try it at the higher difficulty to see if that's interesting in terms of a survival and optimizing your base challenge.

YMMV but that's decent value for the asking price to me, and I'll probably get back to it eventually.

Some random thinking today led my brain to some common sayings around these parts, and one gave me a hearty chuckle. The equivalent of the "6 of one, half a dozen of the other" or the "same shit, different name" sayings you have in english. It roughly translates as "It's not a turd, someone just took a dump"

I have no idea why that made me react that way but it did :V

So Riftbreaker got a full release last week.

It's a pretty neat lovechild of Factorio and a twinstick shooter.

First off, graphics and optimization are pretty fantastic, you get hordes of critters coming at you while you blast at them with a wide variety of weapons that go brrrt, zzap and boom (the nuke especially) and it never chugged a single FPS for me.

Basic premise is that you're the first colonizer on a planet, sent ahead to build up a proper base of operations and a gateway to link back to Earth. To help with this you've got a big stompy mech that can build buildings and equip various weapons and mods. You build your base to gather various resources and process them into useful shit. The logistics are way way simpler than Factorio, and balancing production is fairly simple and straightforward, most of the base building challenge comes from making a defensible layout and having enough room for growth.  A big part of the gameplay is focused on exploring the various biomes to get access to new stuff and survey the flora&fauna to unlock new stuff as well as defending from the regular hordes of unhappy critters coming to get your base.
The main campaign is not terribly long and is somewhat linear at the start/end but the middle is fairly freeform in what route you want to take in terms of progressing your tech and base.

All in all, a neat little game, very satisfying combat and exploration with a decent, if a bit simple base building component. Devs have mentioned coop coming eventually down the line and possible expansions of some sort, which should be interesting to see where they take the game next.

So my hairline has decided to pick up the pace when it comes to receding :V

I knew this was going to come eventually, not many male ancestors that managed to keep theirs past 40, was just hoping it wouldn't hit fully before I was even fucking 30. Still got plenty left, but it's gotten so thin that it's looking fairly sad most of the time and I'm guessing in a year or so it'll recede past the point of pretending I just have a nice widows peak :V

Got up to take a leak last night, stood up a touch too fast, what's worse the lightheadedness took a bit to kick in so I was already in the bathroom and over the toilet when it hit me. Didn't figure out what it was at first so I finished up and turned to wash my hands, at which point I promptly collapsed. Managed to snag my lower back on the door handle as well as hurt my neck when I hit the floor, nothing serious but it's freaking annoying :I

This morning, the car wouldn't start, battery dead, so I took my sisters (she leaves for work later so she was able to go with a co-worker), wanted to replace the battery this afternoon after work but it turns out you need a small wrench to unhook the damn thing, I know we have one, somewhere, precisely for this purpose, but my dad is such a hoarder of useless junk and so terrible at keeping any of it organized that I quickly gave up on rummaging for it, so that'll have to be done tomorrow then.

A remarkably shitty Monday so far, and it's barely halfway over, so I'm looking forward to the rest of it :V

Other Games / Re: How did you last die?

Playing SnowRunner again, this time on hard mode, which makes pretty much everything cost money, including fixing shit and refueling. It's a rather different experience where you need to plan shit out way more and mistakes are punished much more harshly, and if you are too shit you can easily hard lock your self from completing the game by running out of cash.

So I was feeling real clever when I started siphoning fuel from a giant 5k liter trailer that was part of one of the mission chains that unlocks a ton of following missions. So clever in fact that I intentionally skipped doing the mission for a while just to be able to nick fuel for free from the trailer whenever I needed to. Hell, I even got a a tanker add-on for one of the trucks to be able to ferry that shit to other regions. Imagine my horror when I finally emptied the thing and decided I'd like to deliver it now and collect my cash and reputation, as well as continue the mission chain, got it to the delivery place and it failed to register it. As it turns out, you're supposed to get the full thing delivered, not a drop missing.
I then recall that restarting a mission also resets any specific trailers related to it back to their original state, so I casually reset and still feel smug, completely failing to check the trailer itself to see if was actually refilled when it was returned to the starting location.

Turns out it doesn't, so now I gotta find 5k liters of fuel from somewhere, which is not fucking cheap :I

Edit:
And after cashing out and driving a bunch, it turns out the trailer sticks around until you complete the entire mission, and you can just empty it afterwards without any issues with completing the mission :V

Siege rework info is out!

Looks ok I guess, certainly more involved and complex than what we've had before. But it all comes down to how/if the AI will handle the stuff, as the biggest problem of the first two games was the AI being pants-on-head retarded when it came to sieges and stupidly easy to cheese with minimal effort. If the AI is just as bad then all the cool stuff they're doing with the maps and supplies mean fuck all in the end. Also here's to hoping they don't make them too much of a slog, having to fight hour+ sieges every time sounds like it could get old rather fast :V

It's good to know they're not leaving the old races behind tho, that should breathe in some freshness into pretty much every part of the ME map.

Kimchi isn't very hard to make IIRC once you have the ingredients.

You pickle some stuff, dig a hole in your backyard, put the jar in the hole, bury and leave it for ????.

Oh I know, the trouble is the ingredients themselves, some I can get, but the main one being the cabbage is kinda hard, not sure our sort of cabbage would be good for it.

Just had kimchi for the first time ever. Hot damn is it neat.

It's like slightly less powerful sourkraut that replaces the punch with a spicy kick which I really like.

Also that almost fresh cabbage crunch is so enjoyable, you just wanna munch on the stuff all day long.

Damn shame I can't really make the stuff home or get easy access to it (this one was brought by a cousin from the neighboring country xd )
