Other Games / Valheim - Survivaling the norse way!
« on: February 15, 2021, 05:11:33 pm »
Steam page

Kinda surprised this hasn't popped up here yet, considering the amount of noise it's been making around the internet (specifically Steam and Twitch).

What it basically is, is a survival game (like there wasn't an overabundance of those already) set in a procedurally generated world, inspired heavily by the Norse mythos. You're a dead warrior sent by Odin to the exiled world of Valheim to take care of the baddies locked up there before they cause too much trouble. Start out naked, punch trees, get wood, craft tools, hunt animals, build a home, kill bosses, progress, etc etc
It's best described as a 3d Terraria imo, as the progression is heavily tied into exploration and overcoming challenges (for example you only got the basic wood/stone tools and weapons until you kill the first boss, which unlocks proper mining and smelting, which leads to basic metal tools and weapons, etc) while at the same time having a good bit of base building and crafting tied into the whole process. You get massive buffs from resting in a proper place with a roof over your head and a fire burning nearby, as well as buffs from eating food (bigger and longer lasting buffs from better meals). Your gear also needs to be maintained (tho this doesn't require resources, so it only limits how long you can go on without taking a break of sorts) and upgraded from time to time. There's a fairly developed building system that takes into account physics somewhat, so you have to build supports and the like to not have your dwelling collapse on your ass, fairly intuitive in how it communicates this in terms of tinting pieces depending on how sturdy their support is. You can go sailing about since the world is fairly large, dungeon diving as well since there's certain stuff you only get from there.
The combat itself is fairly decent and has some depth, but not without jankiness that most early access/indie games have at release. There's different weapons, blocking/parrying, dodging, all the bells and whistles. Progression in terms of skills is basically do thing to get better at thing, making it more efficient or damaging or what have you. Your hp/stamina is fixed however and the only way to increase it is by eating/resting, basic food gives small buffs, cooked and more complex meals give long lasting and large increases, further encouraging having a proper base of operations so you can get buffed enough to handle some of the nastier enemies.
Death is temporary, you drop all your  shit and lose a certain amount of skill levels (but then get temporary immunity to further loss), plus getting your stuff back gives you a corpse run buff which is nice from getting away from whatever kicked your ass in the first place. Another similarity to Terraria is how characters are handled, you make your guy/gal and then you can generate a seed based world for them. Any gear you have on you you can take to other worlds, and since most shit doesn't respawn, making multiple worlds to farm certain things seems to be a viable tactic.
Also there's coop, makes shit harder, but from the looks of it, having multiple people does help quite a bit.

Anyways, I can't think of anything else off the top of my head to say. Played several hours, it was fairly enjoyable, the graphics are a bit dated but what it lacks in fidelity it more than makes up for in atmosphere (weathering a rainstorm is fucking cool). It's fairly cheap right now too at some 20$ or your equivalent, especially once you realize how much stuff is in there already and that this is just their first EA version, with more shit to come down the road.

So yeah, Valheim, anyone else hooked on it?

From what I've read (which was not much to be honest) it wasn't a single post that did it, more a series of shitty things she's said over the last year or so. This one was more the straw that broke the camels back as it were.

In a hilarious lack of self-awareness tho, folks upset by her getting 'cancelled' are now unsubbing from Disney+ in protest. Because 'cancel culture' is only ok if we do it dammit!

I didn't get WH2 on release/preorder so I can't confirm this, but did the Norsca have the same blurb? I think it might just be poorly worded and it probably will be playable in the current ME map if not the Vortex one. But I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Have they? Where?

The FAQ merely states it's gonna be a Race Pack, not that it's exclusive to game 3 at launch (doesn't say you'll be able to play it in game 2 either but still)

Biggest indication of it being either the Chaos Dwarves or maybe the Ogres is the recent changes to the ME map, while it's still shrouded in fog they most certainly added a bunch more land to the east of the worlds edge mountains. So it would make sense for it to be the CD I guess since the Ogres are a bit further east than that, they'd make more sense after the fact since they'd be facing both Cathay and Dwarves in that case, instead of having an awkward empty space to their west if they come before the Dwarves.

Also on the note of the last lord pack for WH2, LoTW had raised a good point in that it might be Neferata considering again the recent changes to the southern parts of the ME map. No idea who could be her counterpart in terms of the other races/lords tho.  She could be a freelc lord tho, that would take care of that problem I guess.

I took a walk since the weather is so unseasonably warm, went to the market, got snacks and beer, that's all fine. What really brightened and otherwise meh day was seeing a rather pretty girl. Or rather, the ramble my mind went on afterwards regarding the whole thing. I basically walked past her on the sidewalk, single glance, was kind of absent-minded and listening to music. But then my brain did one of those two person things where one person smacks the other to get them to notice something they just walked past, except in this case it was my brain smacking itself I guess? Most akin to a double-take probably, but not really that strong of a reaction.

Anyways, yeah, in this age of masks and general misery, getting smacked over the head by how beautiful someone is, is kinda nice :V

Really surprised that Kislev is a mainline faction in this one, was totally expecting them to be the pre-order DLC since it'd be fairly easy to implement into the current game. So really got no clue who it might be, Chaos Dwarves seem like too big of a faction to be a pre-order, dunno about the Ogres tho, no idea how developed they are. Store page dropped some pretty obvious hints at Nagash but I again doubt they'd just put the big bad as a pre-order thing.

Still, pretty hype, seeing how much fun I've had with the franchise so far (and how much of it I haven't touched yet)

Not sure I'll bother pre-ordering tho, depending on what the thing turns out to be I might just wait and grab it on sale after a while.

I chuckled when one of the news reports on the TV earlier mentioned that the US cautioned Russia about "using excessive violence on the protestors"
Oh, another one of the "hey, police uses violence in the USA, too" crowd.

Riot police use violence everywhere. It is a part of their job. Often it is necessary. Sometimes it is excessive either because of poor training or because such line of work attracts... certain types of men.

It doesn't mean that denying the very basic human right of a peaceful assembly by unlawful arrests and beatings is somehow OK.

Who said anything about it being ok?
I was amused by the bare-faced hypocrisy of the USA having almost a year of violently cracking down on peaceful protests (against police violence and racism no less) before turning around and wagging their finger at Russia after less than a week of doing the same (hell maybe not even the same, we still don't have all the info on what actually went down and if there was anything even remotely approaching the amount of scummy and shady shit the US police have pulled over the months)-

So did you guys know you could change the shape of a splitter by pressing tab? Even tho it says so on the right hand side I never actually noticed that bit :V
It's pretty funky and makes stuff way more useful than I thought initially.

Yeah I've mostly been hoovering up any trees and shrubs and using that for fuel early on. Just queuing up a bunch of harvest commands while I plan my next move or part of the factory is fairly quick and easy.

My favorite part of that sort of bloat is when they try to improve and modernize a thing or a process, so they hire someone new whose only knowledge of the thing is theoretical and completely out of touch with the reality of it. Which leads to the always fun exchange of listening to a lecture on how things 'should' work before going "Yeah, nah, that's impossible for us"

Posting here because I haven't played too much and I can't be bothered making a dedicated thread.

Dyson Sphere Program just released into EA on Steam. The gist of it is, Factorio, but on a stellar scale. Now, the devs are Chinese so there's some engrish present but I think the deal is that you're in a simulation of sorts or something and your task is to build dyson spheres around stars. Whatever, the story isn't terribly important, the gameplay is, and from the couple of hours I've played it's pretty good.
You start with only your little mecha guy and you go around gathering stuff before getting machines that can do it for you, automate further to unlock more advanced stuff so that you can automate even further. If you've played any of the increasing number of factory building games you know the loop. Of course you then expand to other planets and solar systems to get more stuff and it sort of escalates from there. I haven't reached the space stage quite yet as I'm in the process of getting my T2 science pack equivalent up and running.
Some notable things about it (atleast for me), first off, the music, it has a fairly strong Stellaris vibe which means it's pretty damn good if you like that sort of synthy space opera music. Second, the interface is pretty damn sweet and well executed, it's clear the devs played games like these before and have learned how to make everything quickly and easily accessible, manual crafting is intuitive and easily scalable, building stuff is also pretty cool because you essentially start with the Factorio equivalent of drones so you get a pretty nice range.
The controls themselves are kinda cool since you can WASD or just right-click around to make the robot move. There's also jetpacking which is a pretty fun way of getting around.

It's currently on a small discount and can be picked up for 15 Eurobucks or your equivalent and I'd say it's pretty worth it from what I've seen so far and it seems that they'll be making it bigger and better down the line as well.

Kinda, probably the best investigative journalist when it comes to the gaming industry. Dude has written a number of big expose pieces on shitty practices and the like. Gives the above linked article some more weight and credibility.
