Life Advice / Keyboard Recommendations
« on: April 21, 2014, 06:20:52 pm »
Broke a key on my keyboard in half, so it's time for a new one. And I figured I'd try to get a good one instead of the generic ass keyboards I've used for years. (i.e., I'm willing to spend some money.)

If you've read the RAAAGGGGEEEE thread, you know where I'm at with this. Kind of fed up trying to find what I'd like.

I need it to be:
-Light. (I typically keep my board in my lap, and trust me, you notice that weight after a few hours of gaming.)
-Have longer than a 4' cord. (Being that I have it in my lap, I need some extra cord length so it doesn't catch and snag.)
-Not blocking key combinations, as I do want it for gaming.

I'd appreciate:
-Backlighting
-It costing less than $100.
-Headphone/mic jacks on the keyboard.

I don't necessarily need:
-It to be Mechanical. I'm open to the idea, but I know what they cost and benefits aside, hearing my keyboard more than I already do isn't a desire. Also, mechanical = more weight.
-Macro keys. Function keys. Accessibility and media keys. While they're not deal breakers, I don't want a bunch of crap, because I hate installing software for peripherals. It usually leads to them not working with some game and me just deactivating all of it anyways.
-Ergonomic features like a wrist rest.

I don't want:
-Full gamer Xtreeemmmmeeee keyboard features, like a heads up display and well, you know. Stuff that makes it clunky and heavy.
-Ergonomic design (again, doesn't go well in the lap.)

I've trolled Newegg for about half an hour and it seems like if you're not getting a standard, disposable keyboard, suddenly there's a lot of junk on everything else you may not want.

Recommendations, testimonials, links welcome.

Looked at these two: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823239024

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823162029

The Steel Series almost verges on too much stuff, and has extra directional arrow keys which I don't want.
The Poseidon Z is pretty much what I want....but it's mechanical and I don't really know much else about it, which for $80 for a keyboard seems like a problem. What I do read is that it's heavy.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823126043 - This is pretty much what I want. Now if I could just get it with a green back light I'd be happy. I'm not exactly crazy about Logitech products anymore, so I'd prefer to buy from someone else.

Nope:

Quote from: Review
Designed with phantom key blocking to disable any combination of SHIFT + W + SPACE, which specifically renders the board useless to gamers.

Any one have experience with the Microsoft Sidewinder? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4T01GS3515

This seems right up my alley: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2E11AW1926
But the reviews mention it being a cheaper keyboard...and all sorts of manufacturing inconsistencies. I've never heard of LOGISYS.

Life Advice / Processor cleaning question
« on: March 30, 2014, 03:39:03 pm »
Recently a mount on my heat sink broke. After running it for a few weeks my system started locking up and eventually getting corrupted windows files.

So I pulled the heat sink and ordered a new one. I figure the thermal paste got crispy from inconsistent contact with the processor.

Anyways, assuming my processor isn't damaged and this heat sink is the fix, there's a lot of the old thermal paste gunked on the face of the processor. Should I try to clean it off before putting the new one on there? Q-tip and rubbing alcohol? Will the old thermal paste make for a poor contact if it's mushed into the new?

Life Advice / Monitor Recommendations for Cyber Monday
« on: November 15, 2013, 11:58:46 am »
My big monitor died, so I'm in the market for a new one. I considered browsing pawn shops and stuff, but with Cyber Monday right around the corner, I figured this would be as good a time as any to buy a new monitor. (Something I haven't done in about a decade.....)

I'm looking for a 27" +, good response rate. USB jacks, speakers, don't really care about any of that. I'm just wanting something that is more than simply a "big monitor" and will improve my gaming experience. If know of a good brand, link and I'll check up on Newegg ect... come Cyber Monday.

Thanks!

http://indiestatik.com/2013/10/14/jupiter-hell-2/?utm_source=feedly - Q&A with the dev

Aiming to be a 3d turn-based roguelike, daemon blasting in ssssppppppaaaaaaccccceeee. The appearance will be "close to how X-COM or Space Hulk present."

Quote from: Kornel
“Jupiter Hell will be both a successor to DoomRL and AliensRL using ideas that I had for both, but with real production values,” Kornel told me after I asked him about his new announcement. “It will be modern, but classic: the graphics will be non-cartoon 3D with animated models, but it still will be grid based, turn-based and brutally permadeath.”

Not sure I agree with him on the "Non-cartoony 3d" but I guess it's still pre-alpha footage.

The game is focusing on horizontal rather than vertical depth. If you've played The Binding of Isaac, that concept will be familiar to you.

There will be a Kickstarter incoming at some point.

Big 'ol Q&A

Darkest Dungeon will be a turn-based dungeon crawling game, the format of which is currently unclear. Will it have a top-down presentation, echoing games like Hero Quest and other table top dungeon crawling games? The video implies it without committing to it.

Quote from: RedHookChris
You've got an old school grid-based map with fog of war in the lower part of the screen that you use to select your desired destination, moving from room to room.  And like the trailer, your movement tracked as a marker moving over tiles.  However, simultaneously, in the main gameplay screen everything is presented in side view, like you saw in the trailer (walking through the crumbling halls, smashing barrels, digging through corpses for food, fighting off horrid beasts, etc) .  The camera is obviously pulled out further in the game, but the steadycam look and feel is there.

What sets this game apart from other dungeon crawlers, besides the uber gritty art?

The point of the game. Rather than simply leveling a band of heroes and getting them teh phat lewts as you clobber moderate threats, Darkest Dungeon aims to explore the psychology of heroes as they wither under the constant threat of danger and horrors mankind was never meant to know about.

Quote
Each and every adventurer you recruit will develop a unique combination of predispositions, proclivities, flaws and strengths – factors that must be carefully considered when forming a party and leading it through horrific environs. Furthermore, how you perfom in the dungeon will have lasting and impactful consequences on their continued development. You are put smack-dab in the role of a squad leader or sports team manager, doing your best to keep the human factors from fracturing your team or destroying their effectiveness.

There's permadeath (obviously), in addition to the game tracking hero's stress levels and their relationships with other members of the party.

Do watch the video, as it oozes flavor and intent. I'm tempted to say X-COM in a dungeon, but that's probably not accurate. This doesn't seem like a game you win while lamenting your handful of lost soldiers. This seems like a game you play to watch your party go insane and/or die. In their words:

Quote
In short, we want to create the kind of team interaction and tension that arises in the most desperate situations. We want Hudson’s panic from ‘Aliens’, MacReady’s booze-battling from ‘The Thing’, James’s detached sadism from ‘The Hurt Locker’. We want you to manage a party of human heroes faced with almost insurmountable odds. If you can lead them to victory, you’ll have earned it.

The current ETA for cyclopean madness is: Late 2014 for Early Access, January 2015 for full release.

Other Games / River City Ransom Underground. New soundtrack is out
« on: September 18, 2013, 04:17:57 pm »

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/combitstudios/river-city-ransom-underground

WHACK! SMASH! BARF!

Oh yes. The Nintendo brawler that ate up much of my childhood is coming back, officially licensed from the owners of the IP for Kickstarter action. What will this remake bring to the table?

Quote
You're backing a 2.5D open world beat'em up with RPG elements, just like the classic game, for the Windows platform. We're making River City bigger, adding more stores, items, and bringing the cast and crew into the modern era. You'll reunite with old friends (and punch them in the face), meet new ones, and play through an epic story in an urban, open world. Yes, the game will feature local co-op play, and online co-op depending on our distribution partners on launch day.

We've evolved combat based on the mechanics of the golden age of console fighting, and we're pushing to get sophisticated, crafty opponent AI into the game. You're not safe standing on your bench anymore!

I'm sold. Backing at $15 (in Canadian dollars) gets you the game. You can get 2 copies of the game for $30, and 4 for $40 to share with your friends. In-game skins for weapons and characters, and game perks start a bit after that. Physical swag starts at $100. Digital immortality begins from there on.

Estimated ship date is Q3, 2014.

With only two week to go, it seems in danger of not making its goal. So if you love 2d fighting games, co-op beat 'em ups, and making people barf, plant your pledge directly in its face.

So it looks like a bit like River City Ransom, with zombies. And dogs driving cars.

The gist is you're a guy trying to go from Florida to Canada and not die. You can assemble a party of up to 5 people, each with randomized appearances, names and traits. They don't even have to be human, either!

Each city is randomly generated, there's permadeath, and the game is chalk full of random events delivered in the CYOA style. They can have far-reaching consequences...like teaching a dog in your party to drive a car, so if all your humans end up dying, your dog can carry on the struggle, drive on and even recruit other dogs to their party.

Perhaps best of all is: Toady One is in the KS video! I don't know if "Doesn't play by the rules" is a ringing endorsement or not, but for the guy who literally will not put his name to anything other than DF....it must say something he was willing to put his mug in the video.

$10 gets you a digital release copy of the game. Cutesy in-game rewards start at $50. Schwag starts at $100, contributing content starts around $150+.

Their estimated delivery dates imply the game will ship this year, sometime in Q4.

Other Games / DING DONG The Suck is dead. (G'bye GFWL)
« on: August 20, 2013, 09:09:59 am »
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/08/20/it-liiiiiiiiives-gfwl-perma-closing-next-july/#more-165238

On July 1st, 2014, the bane of MP gaming, the unnecessary 4th wheel of DRM, Games for Windows Live will discontinue service.

While we've all been waiting for it to shut down, so good games don't end up trapped with it as their only viable MP service....this does present some complications for games already using it.

(Dark Souls, Resident Evil 5 immediately come to mind, I think also Arkham City?)

Alongside those, Age of Empires will also apparently cease to work at the same time. The wording of the announcement doesn't leave a lot of room for offline play. But maybe it will still be possible.

Despite some games I'm still enjoying probably suffering as a result of this, it's nigh time that GFWL went away. The longer it existed, the more games (a fraction of) would end up using it, further increasing the pain when it finally did close. GFWL has had as many chances for resurrection and to not suck as any other service out there, and it's time is finally up.

Multipass.

Sorry, couldn't help it.

Collateral is a 3rd person driving game, being made by Dancing Dinosaur Games Pty Ltd, out of Australia. You play a taxi driver, Zack Edgewater, who wants to escape this dystopian crapsack hell of New Bedlam, a futuristic cybepunk city that has been put on lockdown by the authorities. Complete missions with various factions in the game to earn their favor, so you can eventually get a passcode that will let you leave the city.

It's pretty clear where the game's inspiration comes from, which is no bad thing to me. Add 1 part Bladerunner, 1 part Fifth Element, place in a car and shake violently until awesome. The game's overall tone though is silly. If the fact a gun that shoots chicken is any indication. Apparently this game is also an homage to Quarantine, which I have not played.

The taxi driving is full 3d so you can swoop down or rocket up as you want (although the videos don't really show this.) The action takes place in an open world so you're not stuck just doing missions, you can drive around. You can customize your taxi with various upgrades: weapons, performance enhancers, a boss push grille on the front. There's slots for many many weapons and everything seems to show on the vehicle after you equip it. They say they already have over 30 weapons to use.

The various factions track your reputation with them, and in addition to paying you, offer bonuses and perks (like faction specific weapons) for working for them. They also offer long-term benefits and consequences, like opening up new areas of the city to explore or resulting in some existing areas being permanently destroyed. Missions range from simple deliveries to police chases, rampages, escorts bank heists and more. There are 8 factions, each of which is diametrically opposed to another. Your choices are basically as follows: megacorp vs. homeless bums, a Cthulhu religion vs. a gene-splicing biotech corp, Burritos vs. Chicken, and Strippers vs. the Carnies Union. That's right, the Carnies of the future have unionized, God help us all.

The game looks a tad rough but it's still got a ways to go in development. What they're showing already looks pretty robust like it's been worked on for a while. It's asking for a paltry $15,000 to make this happen, so I'm guessing this is supplemental rather than necessary funding. They want $5000 for voice acting, $5000 to contract out work for additional content creation and $5000 for a 16-track soundtrack. It's interesting that all the things they list are supplemental rather than necessary to gameplay.

$20 gets you a digital copy of the game for release. From there you get the usual digital artbooks, soundtracks, t-shirts ect....At $150, you can start making contributions to content, beginning with consulting them on an in-game billboard. (Which feature heavily in the level detailing.)

I think I might be in for $20, more if I decide I want the soundtrack, because I loves me some electronica. While it doesn't look super deep, who doesn't want a Korben Dallas simulator? If they can manage to tighten up appearance of shooting and the handling of the game, it could be a gem. Time's already more than half up on this, so if you want in, better not dally.

General Discussion / Happy Birthday Tesla
« on: July 10, 2013, 03:48:20 pm »
My boss is kind of a Tesla fanatic, and so he decided to throw a birthday party/promotion for Tesla on his birthday, this week.

What's really awesome though is he commissioned a friend of mine who works here to do a mural across one whole side of the building: http://imgur.com/a/VorvE

So as you're enjoying all the wonders of your modern, electrified life, just remember to give a silent thanks to Tesla for alternating current.

So this seems like kind of a quirky, interesting game. It seems heavily inspired by Fantasy Flight's Arkham Horror (A Cthulhu Mythos board game, if you're one of the handful of nerds who hasn't yet played it.)

Create an agent who goes out to a mysterious mansion to investigate bizarre occult occurrences. You've got stats, and these stats define your options and chances of success during encounters.

This is where things get quirky. When you have a challenge to complete or overcome, you basically play a game of cards to determine the outcome. You get a hand of cards, and flip over other cards and try to match the suit. Match the suit and exceed teh number value on the card, it's a win. Do neither of those things and it's a lose. When all the cards in your hand have been played, you draw yet MORE cards. If you succeeded in your challenge, these cards are beneficial. Health, items, spells, ect... If you failed, they're harmful. Damage to your health, damage to your sanity, ect...

The game is currently in beta, and you can buy in for $15 somewhere on the Cryptic Comets page.

Several games have tackled the difficult and fun question of "What would it be like to play a ghost and haunt some people?" Games like The Haunting Starring Polterguy, and Ghost Master. However, fewer have covered the other side of the equation, that of the trials and tribulations of the ghost hunters.

So, what craves $7500 and goes bump in the night? This game, Ghost Control Inc.

For such a ghastly sum, the duo development teams of Application Systems Heidelberg Software GmbH and Bumblebee promise the following:

-Randomly generated levels, a buffet of locations across London to track ghosts through.
-Turn-based, X-Com-style gameplay in an isometric presentation.
-Manage a team of 5 Ghost Hunters with their own stats. Hire or fire as your needs require.
-In the best tradition of Ghost Busters, explore locations to trap ghosts while trying to NOT destroy the joint.
-Buy or acquire new equipment to help you in your missions. Load the gear up into your VW Ghost, but be mindful of the space requirements.
-Build a base for your business, expanding the building to allow you more equipment.
-Chuckle or groan at the regular news reports that will frequently appear in game, or, on your smart phone.
-Try to keep your business in the green. If you go bankrupt, you can start again and learn from your mistakes.

All the terrible yuck yucks aside, this looks pretty neat. I loves me some ghost games, from either perspective. While the game's humor is probably going to be hammy as shit, if not downright terrible, the rest sounds pretty sweet and I dig the retro isometric graphics.

This may be the cheapest Kickstarter I've ever linked here at the Bay, so I'd find it hard to believe that it won't be successful. $5 gets you the game on release, which is also pretty damn cheap compared to, like, every other Kickstarter evar. The rewards are.....well some of them are a little dumb. A ghostly ringtone, eh? A PDF for notes, with actual numbered pages?!?! Get the fuck out. You have to pledge up to $50 to get bog-standard "stick your name in the game somewhere" reward, something I thought given how cheap all the backer levels and such are, was a bit of a surprise.

I get the impression this is a dev house backed by a non-game software studio, if the exceptionally business-y name of Application Systems Heidelberg Software GmbH is any indicator. It might also explain why they're asking for so little money.

The delivery date is roughly, as it stands now, sometime in September.

So what would happen, when the adults go missing at an orphanage so twisted it would have Tim Burton madly clawing at the walls trying to escape?

This game, apparently.

Our Darker Purpose is a 2d shooter, that looks a lot like Don't Starve while playing a lot like Binding of Isaac. The areas are much larger than BoI (and the view can scroll) and the premise is pretty familiar. Be surrounded by horrible things, dodge their attacks and the many level hazards with agility (or not), blast enemies with ever weirder powerups and marvel at how something this dark can be this fun.

Unlike BoI, with its very roguelike systems, permadeath and lack of straight up RPG stats, ODP IS a hardcore, persistent character RPG. The "students" (I don't know if you can only play the girl or not) get experience and buy skills from different discipline areas that are adorably named after the subjects they're no longer learning, like Math & Science, Social Studies, ect....

I haven't dug too deeply into the game details but there's plenty to be shown in their Kickstarter video. Oh yeah, that. It's 1/4 funded and has 22 days left to go, so the question is not really "If" but "how much?" will it succeed.

While I'm not terribly excited by the visuals as they relate to gameplay, stylistically it's right up my alley and sounds like it has some great music as well. While I doubt I'll back it, it's definitely on my radar for release.
