Nah, I'm using ABP. I've gotten exactly one warning so far.

I got stinkeye and treated like a parasite because one day I was too sick (pneumonia dregs had kicked up again) and asked if she could pick up the takeaway I'd ordered on her behalf instead of doing it myself (as I'd done for the rest of the month).

I got guilt-tripped repeatedly with her locking herself in the bathroom and crying any time I tried to actually talk about the issues we were having, because I "sounded too aggressive".

I was informed that I would be partaking in the extremely restrictive fad diet she wanted to go on, because this was her "last chance" to lose weight and she wouldn't be able to stick to it unless I was also on it, so if I didn't do this then she would gain weight again, ruin her life, and it would be my fault. She explicitly said that I would be the cause of her life getting ruined if I didn't take to this diet.

But there was enough of me there that knew this wasn't right, wasn't okay, and made little offhanded comments about what was really going on. Subconscious cries for help.

Man this is so eerily similar to what happened to my childhood friend in his marriage. He bent over backwards for his wife. Did the fad diet (keto) even though she was already rail skinny. Insisted on living healthy AF. She couldn't hold down jobs due to anger and attitude issues so he was largely the sole wage earner. I got the impression she'd shout at him sometimes. When he got sick with mono, she treated him like crap and didn't really take good care of him, which he only barely, sheepishly confided to me at one point. She'd vibe check him even when he'd made plans to hang out and have some bro time, calling him and interrupting us just to establish that he was at her beck and call, giving him tasks. Really dumb shit like "Oh, I seem to have gotten lost driving on the highway, can you help me......"

She eventually left him for an older man who smokes. (TBF, she was older than my friend so it was more a guy closer to her age.) He was completely fucking devastated, even after all that.

Just... Kind of venting. Not really looking for advice...
Fuck, I had a lot to uncork. Sorry.

It may be a meme these days but, we see you.

Classical stories at least have some real pathos. This shit is just mundane boredom masquerading as impactful emotion. Like, "A Marriage Story" at least has some real emotions and tangible, relateable things in it. It's wildly unpleasant to experience but at least you feel like these are real things that happen to real people and that your time wasn't wasted on some trite titillation. It's a movie with no real ending AND no real point to it.

As is my usual habit on work trips, I watch stuff on HBO in the hotel room I’d never be motivated to watch on my own.

So I watched “The Ice Storm.” An “adult” relationship drama.

These movies are ALL the fucking same.

They’re all about broken relationships, and sex. Even the “teens” in the movie, their arcs are about sex.

In this movie, Kevin Klein is sleeping with someone other than his wife and that’s like…half the movie. It culminates in a key party, where all the adults are basically going to a swinger party. Kevin Klein, Sigorney Weaver, and Kevin Klein’a wife all attend, and all this relationship drama plays out.

It also takes place during the eponymous ice storm. And right near the end, my movie watcher brain goes “You know what this depressing shit show needs to cap it all off? A needless tragedy.”

And lo, a minute later, Elijah Wood (Signorney Weavers son) gets himself electrocuted playing around during the ice storm when a downed power line makes contact with the metal guard rail he’s leaning against. It’s improbable, it’s telegraphed and it’s entirely pointless as a plot point in the last 10 minutes of the movie. The character isn’t even likeable! He’s a weirdo out doing his own thing and they kill him off because otherwise the plot as nothing to close it up.

Who the fuck greenlights these scripts, seriously? Why do we fill modern media with depressing shit shows of human drama, as though real life isn’t shitty enough. And then you add a perverted director who wants to “explore” teens having sexual experiences on top of it, as some sort of lame duck “children repeating sins of their parents” allegory. When it’s really just an excuse to have Christina Ricci prey on a 14 year old boy.

The stories suck, story beats suck and the only thing of real interest is the sex. Which just gets progressively cringier and grosser as it crosses over from “hot” to “sad and awkward.”

Went to the upper peninsula of Michigan last week, just got back.

Beautiful country, great parks, doesn't smell as bad as Wisconsin, yada yada yada.

Why the fuck does Michigan hate road signs? Town Street signs, speed limit signs, major road signs. They seem so rarely used and when they are used, it's often tiny signs or in weird places. Most town streets are just totally without signs, especially in smaller towns. Even on major roads the signs are rare and when posted often seem to be the size and location I'd expect from some suburban road you drive 15mph on, not some road sign you're suppose to see on a 70mph road. And speaking of the speed of roads, those are like never posted either! I'm not sure if I saw a speed limit sign before Houghton, it seems like mostly you get them when you are entering a town, if the town isn't too small, and only really big towns bother with a speed limit when you're exiting it felt like. How the heck is anyone suppose to know what speed to drive?

But the worst part about the sign situation has to be that when they do exist,  they often have the most asinine placement of them. For roads that do apparently merit actual multiple signs, major turn offs and the like, instead of something sane like signs saying that a turn off is coming, and then the turn off having an arrow pointing the way, multiple times on my trip though Michigan I came across situations where a sign "warning" about an upcoming turn would simply have the name of the upcoming road and an arrow pointing the direction of the turn... Which more often then not would mean you have signs saying shit like "98!" with an arrow pointing directly down a road and that road not being 98! Because actually, 98 is a block or two up. And the road it's pointing directly at, of course, doesn't have any other signs that tell you what it actually is to warn you it's not 98 because of course like 95% of roads in Michigan, it doesn't merit a sign at all apparently.

That whole area is past its prime. You have a lot of blight in the Indiana/Michigan area. Struggling economies, dying towns and a lot of elderly people. Don't even get me started on the Toll Ways, which are designed to confuse and infuriate both locals and people driving through. I've driven in that area frequently for probably the last 30 years and I swear very little has changed since I was a kid.

Often when businesses grow they also re-evaluate what roles people are in and if they feel they're still serving those roles. Restructurings are a thing. Not saying it's also not all possibly bollocks but from time to time it's not.

Didn’t think I’d get into a Souls game.

One of us. One of us. They only get better from there.

For me I was trudging through the wilderness toward a point of interest when I saw a boar. Then two boars. I started backing away through the trees when ANOTHER boar charges me from the flank. I'm standing there stunned and unable to move, so I can watch as 3 boars becomes 4 boars. I start trying to limp away once the stun wears off, but get charged in succession until I'm reduced to a pile of meat in the middle of the woods somewhere.

Played a good chunk of Cult of the Lamb last night. Overall still pretty much the same game as around release, with a bit more Quality of Life. My interest kind of petered out around the same point though, so maybe there's more to the end game that I haven't gotten to. I could probably, it's a very easy game to play.

Also playing some Stoneshard. It's definitely a smoother experience than it used to be, I'm overflowing with cash, repairs are easy to stay on top of and the enemies feel fairly balanced for where you're at in the beginning of the game. My biggest need is storage space right now because I have so much stuff. I'm hung up on one part of the quest that I know there's an alternate solution for but I don't want to look it up yet. Stoneshard is just such a cozy RPG. The charming pixel grahpics, the earthy vibe of being out in the rain in the dark, your cloak protecting your gear from rusting, your pack loaded with food, water, bandages and painsalves, bandits on the road to your right, wolves to your left, combat being fast and escalating in lethality quickly.....it's just a very wholesome experience now that they've whittled the world down to a more manageable size and the challenges don't feel like brick walls.

Pakistan is destabilizing as we speak due to a water crisis among other things. They have, what, over a few hundred nukes? If Pakistan collapses, all those nukes now go on the black market and proliferation by unstable actors becomes a much more likely scenario.

I'm not going to speak to the overall ease of access to nukes. But when states with nuclear arms become failed states with nuclear arms it becomes a lot more likely.

I like Wardruna, but much like American Metal, there are points in songs where it becomes slightly cringe. Which is me, not the music. But still.

Also Heiliung's female vocalist is S Tier.

I prefer Heilung, personally. It comes off as more folk music, whereas Wardruna is like folk with a metal vibe.

Pretty frustrating morning to come to work to.

First off, I learn that a customer I spent a week on site with in August, who quit using the software immediately after I left, is now low-key threatening to sue us.

They weren't ready for our software to begin with. But then also every employee at the business told me who their biggest problem was. Even the accountant GM stated it. Sat in a boardroom meeting with the GM and Owner and sort of described the situation as I saw it. Was told my input was valued and appreciated.

Come back home and they do a 180 and say they didn't appreciate my comments or my insights. (Long story short, the problem guy has been there for like a decade and there's no one to replace him so he threw his weight around and said it's either me or this software. Dude was trying to sabotage us on Day 1 telling everyone we shouldn't do this. Owner decided to side with him. Guaranteed the guy is stealing from them. That is almost always the case when someone throws this big of a shit fit, who also happens to be labeled as the biggest problem at the business.)

Anyways, we agreed to let them out of a $120,000, 5 year contract they INSISTED we write for them. No strings attached, just pay for the time on site for both myself and my coworker, who were there for a week.

Now they're trying to reconcile a single week's business out of Quickbooks and are pissed that our accounting integration doesn't push line item details and "the numbers don't match." Pretty sure this is the first time they've looked at the accounting data in 2 months. They said their lawyer is going to send us an email which we haven't seen, which I'm sure is a legal threat.

I'm being told not to worry about it, that I didn't do anything wrong and this is just how some people in my industry choose to behave. That doesn't help my sense of responsibility much. I'm just sick of cheap ass customers who don't know what they want and don't take their own commitment to running their own business using our software seriously. So sick of this nickle and diming and finger pointing. It's a waste of my time.

Oh but the hits keep on coming!

For months a customer has wanted a custom project done that automates some yearly task they have to complete at a very specific time. No one wants to do this project but they were willing to pay for it, so I greenlit it. I came up with the idea of how it would work with the least development resources.

During the quarterly planning meeting, which I'm not part of, my CEO heard this request and instead of assigning it to the developers, who said this was their responsibility to work on....he instead kicked it BACK to my department to do custom database development work. We're support people. We're not developers. We will require development support to craft this thing, which begs the question why the devs aren't being allowed to do it. My boss' rationale was that dev is super busy and has bigger fish to fry....but this is paid custom DEVELOPMENT. That is not a support task. He even floated the idea of us receiving spreadsheets of data and uploading it for them.......ON CHRISTMAS EVE.

God fucking damnit I'm so mad. I did all the leg work to get it to this point, only to have it thrown back in my face and be told we will write the code OR give our time so the customer doesn't have to.

It's pretty fucking frustrating when my CEO parachutes into a meeting with no context and makes calls that his entire team is telling him are wrong.

I must have ranted loud enough he heard me because he came into my office to apologize and said he wanted to talk about it. So that's something I guess.

PPPPPPFFFFFFFFFTTTTTTTTTTTT, this job sometimes.

Also, for the US, our interest in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict vastly outstrips our interest and attention on Europe and former Soviet satellites. Just the way things are here. There is a massive Israeli lobbying effort, plenty of Jews with ties to their homeland and feels about it, and Israel has been a political football for American politicians for longer than I've been alive.

And war fatigue is a thing. The Russian War of Aggression has been going on for a while. Sort of like how we couldn't keep being shocked and appalled by what was going on in Syria, eventually the news of attacks, new fronts opening, new atrocities starts to become commonplace.

There have been times when there was so much news coming out of Gaza etc...that we also started to tune out as Americans.
