DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: January 16, 2010, 03:56:51 am »
A dwarven caravan showed up, followed by a goblin siege, I watched the caravan get slaughtered, then, noticing that tha caravan guards handled the last of the goblin marksmen, decided my 1 uninjured champion, 2 sworddwarves, a swordmaster, a hammerdwarf, a spearmaster, and a marksdwarf - the only thing left of my military should handle the 3 squads of goblins, rather than letting all that experience go to waste on weapon traps.

I looked at 2 of the squads, saw lashers, axegobs, and wrestlers, then I assumed the 3rd was roughly the same thing. I was very wrong.

My swordmaster, after getting his 15th kill hit champion, then he lead the charge on squad 3... a squad of only spear gobs
he kills 4 more, then gets a spear to the chest. his lung was punctured by a poorly trained speargob.. I'm happy his family and only friends were killed in a prior incident,  saves me from dealing with the tantrum spiral.

I really should learn to check All the enemy squads...

My king still hasn't shown up, (it's been 2 years since I met his requirements for arrival), his private building is complete, and fully furnished with platinum and steel furniture, and an artifact tower cap bed.
He has a private statue garden now too, with a bunch of 3-colour gem windows around it, and no roof so he won't get cave adapted. all of this around 3 masterful nickel silver statues. (working on getting a platinum masterful statue  for the centerpiece of the garden)

I also came across my HFS.. my population went from 214  to 174, (wasn't exactly prepared) and is now down to 172 thanks to  a wounded dwarf never getting taken to a bed and the meloncholy dwarf that happened to be her lover.
I lost all but 2 of my champions, all of my speardwarves, all but 1 swordmaster, a few members of my fortress guard (marksdwarves) 2 royal guards (hammerdwarves), and all my non-guard marksdwarves.
I'm amazed there wasn't more of a tantrum spiral (most of my population is back up to content)
all of this, before I even had time to activate "strand extraction" on one of my dwarves (I had only dug up a couple of tiles before I hit the HFS, until then I had been avoiding it to get the king the hard way I decided he was late enough though and went for it once the season changed back to winter)

I tried making an Elder Scrolls mod just for a laugh once. Wood elves found it virtually impossible to survive even in just 100 years of world generation, with one world gen only coming up with one wood elf left in the world, where he was a nord prisoner, and another world gen having just two wood elves, both of whom were redguard prisoners :D

I'm not surprised, wood elves from the elderscrolls series seem to be very similar to Vanilla dwarf fortress elves, but without the [Size: 7] advantage. (and of course there are some big though new civs for them to fight with)

From what I've seen, a particular group usually gets wiped out because they only started with one civ that happened to be stuck between two other civilizations. More often than not, this winds up being elves by default simply because dwarves/goblins are mountain races while most human civs tend to crop up near oceans while forests tend to appear in the area between those two.

The elves in this world popped up a little south of a peninsula, and right near the ocean's edge, with humans to the south and goblins to the east.  Was kind of funny, they expanded a little in the first decade or two, only to be forced back, then north near the peninsula where they made their last stand.  :)

I should mention that It happened in only 200 years, so it wasn't like they were withered away by 1000+ years of losses, they basically failed as a society right from the start.
(just thought I should mention it because of the comments about them being easy to kill off in long worldgens)

Just from looking through legends, it looks like most of the elves were the victims of human opportunism, the titans and bronze colossi in this world seem to hate elves, and a few elven towns show a titan/colossi rampage followed closely by occupation by a human civ.
the rest ended up falling to attacks on multiple fronts by a couple goblin towers.

:) that's what they get for fighting with wooden weapons I suppose, I had just never seen the civilization entirely removed from the world before.

Select the item from his inventory (highlight it and hit enter) then dump([d]) the item and one of your dwarves will run over and snatch it from him, you can reclaim it once it's been taken.

Edit:  elizar replied before me while I was typing.  :P

haven't been using orcs, just got lucky with vanilla 40d16 it seems.
:P just wish I could have gotten a breeding pair of eagles and/or bears before they were eliminated, other than the underground pool's residents, the only wild animals I've seen on this map are mountain goats, and even those are pretty scarce lately (overhunting I guess?)

year 13 at "Mirrorallies", and basically I'm decorating while I wait for the king to get here, I met his requirements in winter when I built a steel road (taking me from about 400 road value[bridges] to 13,000, the king wanted 5000) and I'm hoping he arrives before next winter (currently early autumn).
while I wait I'm engraving my main entryway, nobles rooms, the crypt, the kings burial chamber,  and the path leading to the structure containing the king's other rooms.
I recently drained my underground pool (snakemen pulled in a swordmaster with masterpiece steel plate(and chain) armour and sword, so I sent in my champion speardwarves to get revenge (and some peasants to grab the dead swordmaster's gear, of course)
the area is now dedicated to silk collection (and functions as a small secondary tower cap farm)
also, I've gotten up to 6 dwarves working exclusively  as wood cutters now, to make coal, to fuel some smelters, because I'm trying to get enough steel bars for a 5 level high steel wall and this map has no magma, and I can't seem to find any coal veins [not that I've looked that hard yet]

I wish it was the kobolds that were wiped out, at least I could have gotten some nice pets from the elves.

how often does one of the more dominant civilizations get wiped out anyway? this is the first time I've seen it but i've only been playing for a couple months.

So, I was playing in my 13-year-old fortress, watching the seasons fly by at a blistering 7 FPS (210 dwarves tends to do that) when I realized, despite being 2 region tiles from an elven town, the tree-huggers never bothered to visit, curious I decided to copy the save to see why. It turns out, the only elves left in the entire world, are goblin prisoners!
All the elven settlements are empty, all the living elves in the legends listing  that I noticed are in goblin civs, and there is no region that has them listed as neighbors!

:D At least there's no one around to complain about my wood burning campaign.

Has anyone else had a civilization driven from the world during worldgen?
