DF General Discussion / Re: Running on Ubuntu
« on: December 01, 2010, 04:34:44 pm »
Standard to get things running is package manager, but I am not sure whether ubuntu has newest df in its repositories. To run it, download the linux executable from front page, navigate to unpacked directory with your terminal and run df (./df). I guess it will throw some problems about missing libs, but you will get some pointers form it, what to install.

I think he was saying that the thread is still on the first page of general discussion subforum  :D

big and awesome post by blacken

Hi, I have some prior programming experience, but my education in this area is very non-consistent (still high school), so I decided to do the exercises, in Python, and then maybe in C or C++.
I am at third item now (:P hope I will make it to the end), but there are some things I am not sure about. There maybe could be list of basic methods for each data structure to implement, because I don't actually know what to program :D. Like I made insert, append, set, get but there are also mentioned things like searching for linked list, what does it? Also a Python-specific questions (but may relate to other higher-level languages), there is no mechanism for getting memory, i made malloc function returning array chunks and interface in python just means class with empty methods? And thinking about sane api for tree, again not sure what is it, maybe I'll just try to make all the methods in "Common Operations" section.
I may provide my code when I get done more of the exercises if somebody wants, for my and hopefully others reference.

Yea, I always wondered why you say that df's learning curve is steep. From the graphs here it would mean that you get skill very fast.

You could try urxvt, it works for me and few other people.

I dont know very much about this, but intel architecture is known for being bloated and not designed well, due to backwards compatibility dating to 80's (or whatever). ARM and others are designed from scratch, so they can use more modern internals, being equally powerful at lower power. And when you are talking about mobile not able to run moderns apps, I doubt you can put your PC in your pocket...

First, thanks for great job, I see real improvements from d18 here.
I have reported that big-screen crash bug few times, and this may be connected, but I got it using a bit smaller window, so maybe not. Basically, game crashed with error message when I tried accesing thoughts and preferences (VBO, don't remember exact resolution, just stretched the window not to fit entire screen).

Oh, many thanks, installing lib32-sdl_image did the trick

I have some problems with png that were not present in d17, after running window pop-ups and says
Code: [Select]
Not found: data/art/curses_640x300.png
libpng12 and lib32-libpng12 installed, tried copying various libpngs to df dir
here is full log, although I think that only top is relevant:

Any remarks on this crash bug?

Also, the 40d16 bug where the game attempts to set an invalid grid size may have survived into 40d17.

I know you might be aware of it, but it is probably the same bug as this.

ncurses mode is great, and there is no segfault on embark (and...). Unfortunately, in urxvt, shift + arrows results in normal key presses  (shift + up is "a"), and performance is worse.

Hm. Is this still the "starting with a too-large window crashes DF" bug?
Actually its embarking and entering some other screens (thoughts and preferences, some parts of help), but yes  :)

Oh yeah. Fandango on core.

That's not a backtrace, unfortunately.. strcat, assuming it really is the culprit, seems to have overwritten it.  >:(
Should I report this as separate bug to bugs section?

The DF executable is stripped, libgraphics is not.

At least the last few frames of the backtrace should have names. Post the whole thing anyway, okay?

Its basically the same thing I posted before, but anyway...
