DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Most insane forgotten beast incident?
« on: April 11, 2011, 01:51:20 pm »
My first, and most memorable one was Imi, a great blob with wings. It first appeared about a year after breaching the caverns, terrified the dorfs that met it and seemed sure to send the fortress to its early doom... but instead it flew away into an upper cavern and eventually ended up in a HUGE underground lake. There, the brave Serpent Woman Spearwoman Kaslalrongquan engaged the beast, driving it back and wounding it, but it kept fighting back with its deadly spittle and evil-looking wings... and so they would remain, locked in deadly combat, for more than two years. During this time, a great project was devised that would open a hole in the above cavern, channel the water into a holed-out area below and thus effectively drain the entire lake into an even lower cavern, allowing speardwarves, swordsdwarves and marksdwarves in to attack and hopefully defeat the beast. Alas, it was not to be, and after a year of strenous work that saw two miners dead, three severely injured and a large section of the flooring collapse to 10 z-levels below, the project was abandoned and it was thought that maybe the beast and his adversary would simply remain in eternal combat, as a sort of symbol of the eternal struggle all dwarves must face in the trials and tribulations of their daily lives.

But lo! One day, the serpentwoman suddenly and unexpectedly slew the beast, and sent its corpse flying into a wall. She was hailed a hero, and became an eternal friend of the Mountainhome for her heroic actions. The beast's humongous body (about 11,000 units of mass in all) was turned into biscuits, stews, roast and other delicious things, or simply eaten raw; the sheer value of the beast's now-deceased corpse and its parts made up the bulk of exports for over four years, with a single meal made from its remains valued in the hundreds or thousands of dwarfbucks, and there being literally 11,000 pieces of it to cook, the supply was nearly limitless. Other beasts came and went, including those made of rutile (with deadly dust akin to a cave collapse- took half a year to defeat), blood (died in one hit), and snow (died instantly from it being too warm... ...), but none was remembered so fondly as the great Imi, source of the fortress' newfound wealth, its fame and most of its meals, and a legend was already beginning to form around it and its deeds, and of the mighty prowess of she who would after a battle worthy of Armok himself, slay it; unfortunately, it was cut short by a goblin invasion, a partial submersion of the fortress and a giant troll breaking down the last parts of doors that kept the unwary out, submitting them and all of Tomeauthored to a fate reserved for those who fall in epics, and being a great story still for the surviving parts of their civilization that would later find it, scattered and broken, and of the axelady master that returned in fury to avenge her brethren after an epic journey across the very tops of a world-spanning mountain range, only to be cut down by the nefarious lash of a goblin master, and reduced to a pulp by his evil troll masters and sword-wielding kin soon thereafter; however, none of this bothered the ones now taken up residence in the fort, who boasted of their might, power and ability to defeat the foul bearded ones... until a day much later, when a dark shadow rose from the neglected caverns below them... but that is a story for another time, and indeed other ears than were now so vain and ignorant as to think to ignore that which does under the living earth lie... in watching, and in wait.

Best part?

It was composed of vomit.

...Or for that matter to 31.25, or anything... it would be fun to see the fort, kind of sad I can't :P

48
Edit:  "Cannot construct floor grate: Location submerged".  Apparently you cannot build anything under a flowing waterfall.  That makes me sad, I wanted to build a bridge that extends to a waterfall entrance (with floor grates to keep everyone from getting swept off).   Dwarves get happy thoughts, invaders get dumped a dozen Z-levels to a river full of piranha, carp, and alligators (which are eating all the piranha).  Oh well.  :(

But can't you build some kind of diversion in the form of a wall or a floodgate, and thereby make it not flow onto that specific tile for long enough that you could build on it? I know I managed to do that once, almost. Damming the river is quite the project though, but fun :)

Also, I too got the missing stuff when I ran the savegame updater. Winmerge is your friend? I was getting annoyed at not being able to make porcelain from my heaps of kaolinite, and figure the reactions are missing (though I can still collect clay...) etc. Is there a way to keep the Ironhand tileset but still run the Phoebus patcher, or is that just the simple init.txt editing that I normally do too?

Also also, there needs to be creature info in the manual. Just sayin' :)

//A, thankful

49
HOORAY!!! Finally, a manual with all the info I crave! (Except for how to make boulders... oh well, I'm satisfying that by making rock cabinets and deconstructing them for the moment... but still ;)

And then another question... is that the music from Warcraft II I hear playing in the background? It makes me a bit confused, but it's good nevertheless :P

That kitten roast is made of masterfully minced kitten, yes?

Mixed in with Forgotten Beast body parts and remains... made of vomit.

And boy, is this gonna get even weirder once we get all the new animals on the sponsorship drive list...

on the other hand, we can finally cook proper escargot and, it seems, foie gras. Or am I mistaken? :P

Also, a mason got stuck on top of the outer walls for several months before being noticed. Once that happened, due to an unfortunately timed save, he'd run down the stairs, throw himself at the nearest barrel of booze... and then immediately die of thirst while drinking from it.

Luckily, that's the only death in the fortress so far, meaning that it now only houses 36 Ecstatic dwarves and 3 Very Happy ones. Alas. At least he got a nice grave...

(and I learned to watch out for masons building walls on corners! damn save timing...)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: January 09, 2011, 05:50:24 pm »
37 out of 40 dwarfs are Ecstatic, the other three are merely Very Happy. 24 of them are idling in the main areas, there's huge quantities of booze, food and all kinds of goods, we have a moat, a wall and drawbridges and are next to the ocean with an underground reservoir filled by the aquifer from above (!), meaning pretty much unlimited supply of everything we'll ever need to fend off pretty much anything that comes at us.

Next project: turning _everyone_ into siege operators and having them practice firing bolts and stones until the cows come home, then when said cows (/goblins/werewolves/illithid soul flayers) actually appear...

"FIRE!!!"

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Weirdest food you've been offered?
« on: January 09, 2011, 05:15:48 pm »
Well, I couldn't find a proper place for this discussion so I'll just put it here for the time being. I have for some time been quite bemused over what the merchants offer me in terms of food - sure, there's the regular -horse blood barrel-, +prepared draltha tripe+ and *leopard sweetbread* fare, but one thing I've yet to figure out how they get, or even eat, is this.

Prepared Firefly Brain.

I mean, seriously? The brain of an insect not even two inches long, presumably with the brain itself being so small as to be almost invisible? How did you even get that out? And for the love of Armok, how did you manage to prepare it?? You can barely even see it, let alone cook it in any way imaginable that wouldn't get it completely lost in the process, and even then, it would be so tiny you'd probably not even notice you swallowed it.

And that begs the question of exactly how the merchants procured it, and brought it to the fortress... but more importantly, how in Armok's name it still counts as a full meal for an adult working dwarf! Or, for that matter, how they find it in the bottom of the large wooden barrels it seems to be necessary to store it in. Oh well... just another mystery for the ages I think, and proof of the insanity, hilarity and general awesomeness that is DF ;)

Just thought I'd share .P

Getting a Forgotten Beast to arrive... made of snow. He took one step into the caverns, realised "oh shit, it's like 11,000 Urist in here" and promptly melted.

Cool to see a new patch up just when I was looking for info on the "lost adventurer" that showed up and subsequently bit the head off my militia commander, his subordinate and two of the war dogs before a recruit up and owned it with a hammer. I approve of all the things you do, Deon, and thus I'd like to read more about it in the wiki. I know it's been said before and all that, but PLEASE make it at least useable for something else than metals and plants. For instance, I haven't a clue on how to work most of the new buildings, let alone what they require as the reactions don't show up - and since I've realised how much I've come to depend on the regular wiki for info it'd be great if there was some kind of at least basic info on all the new things so one didn't have to go by trial and error and hope to find out things from it that could easily be learned from reading about them.

Other than that, great job!

Oh, also the same question as above; can I just drop my old save into this new thing without a problem? I'd assume so, but better safe than sorry (and of course I keep a backup :P).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Entertaining or Weird gods
« on: December 16, 2010, 08:25:01 pm »
Well, in my latest oceanside fort almost half the dwarves worship the goddess of oceans, "Arel the Ocean of Water", who is associated with salt. Most of the rest seem to favour either trickery, metals or fortresses, and a few some others with charity, trees and other odd things thrown in. Still, thought it was kind of fitting for them to pray to the ocean god when they live right next on its shore... :P

OMG! Just noticed on the embark screen, upon equipping my dwarves with drinks, that it actually gives me the option to feed them julmust. You sir, are awesome.

For those who don't know, julmust is a traditional Swedish drink had around Christmas, hence its name (jul=christmas) and I've drunk it every year since I was a kid. And now my dwarves can too! Assuming I can figure out how to produce it in-game, that is. Or I guess I could just buy it off the traders once they arrive... but still. Julmust. Wow.
