Curses / Re: Is LCS 4.04 the most up to date version?
« on: March 20, 2012, 07:04:54 pm »
Cool, I'm glad it's still being worked on.  I've played the game at length before, so I'll try out the 0.9 thingy by Deon, I suppose.

Does anyone (hint: Jonathan S. Fox or Deon) know what's coming in a newer version?

Question: Am I correct in asserting that this is only for Linux (specifically Ubuntu at the moment) and not working on Windows yet?  Can I compile it for Windows, or is it just flat out not supported?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Garbage chutes
« on: March 13, 2012, 06:30:56 pm »
In order to prevent random flying creatures access and clumsy dwarves falling down the chute, you could set up a series of retractable floor bars so that garbage would build up somewhere or at every level and then you could pull the appropriate level when you wanted to clear the chute.  Do adamantine floor bars require longer for building destroyers to get through than iron bars?

Any progress on that big red X bug?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: I love this game so much!

I don't even remember what we were talking about.
Gas prices I think?

I think the font is pretty easy to read.  I also like that it's playful.

Incredible, it gives the player a completely different impression of the game.  The game looks much more upbeat!  I like it!

I had an unhandled exception when clicking on the "Description" text box for the "Bird_KIWI" entry.  I'm using Ironhand 0.66.

Edit: I can't get this error to happen again.  I have noticed a few graphical glitches as well, with certain fields not updating completely.  I will just put this all down to you not having gotten around to it yet, as you've only just started working on it  :P  Very cool program so far!

DF Modding / Re: Demons, books, and spheres

This is an interesting topic that begs the question: when will Toady expand book writing to non-leader types?  Booksellers, book keepers, etc.  It would be neat if your book keeper in your fortress would actually keep ledgers of fortress trading and yearly stockpiles.  Your fortress leaders could keep journals of notable events and diplomacy or attacks.  Everyone in your fortress should be writing all the time, so should people living in cities, and bandits hiding out in the hills.  Bronze Colossi should be keeping track of how bored and lonely they are in their caves and minotaurs should be keeping a diary of the children they've eaten and how to get out of their mazes.  But not everyone should be a writer, of course.  It should be associated with someone's skills or attributes and if they qualify for understanding the concept, then that's the first step.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your 'Bitch, Please' moments
« on: March 09, 2012, 04:10:15 am »
These comments are not on topic, you all need to stop lighting trolls on fire and post some "Bitch Please" pictures.

On topic: @Frogwarrior - Loved the Forgotten Beast overkill strategy, I take it the hallway eventually passes through your barracks, so how do you prevent that hallway from becoming a magma pipe to your barracks?

Also- HugoLuman, what is happening in AussieGuy's picture in the OP?  All I see is a clown themed checkers game.

DF General Discussion / Re: How big are Giants?
« on: March 08, 2012, 01:57:58 am »
Is there any instance of one animal's giant being larger than an animal's whose normal sized is larger normally?  For example, leopards are smaller than elephants in their normal sizes, but I assume the leopard's giant size is smaller than the elephant's giant size.  Is there any case where this does not hold true?

Curses / Is LCS 4.04 the most up to date version?
« on: March 07, 2012, 12:00:34 pm »
Hey, I was just wondering if LCS 4.04 is the most up to date version of the game?  Is 4.04's source code floating around anywhere?  Is it still being worked on?

I'm interested in the Civilization aspect.  Is this a sign of things to come?  Will Civilizations start having more impact on your Dwarves and Adventurers due to pregenerated Societal knowledge and characteristics?  For instance, one civilization of dwarves are really good at taming Polar Bears to ride into battle with, while another civilization of Dwarves finds that even the greenest of Archers can split a hair on a dog's tail from 300 units of distance away.

This seems to be the same sort of foundational change that Toady made when he designed the powers/secrets and book related abilities.  I think he's preparing to make choosing civilizations much more interesting and important. *crosses fingers*

DF General Discussion / How big are Giants?
« on: March 07, 2012, 10:53:55 am »
Does anyone know how large giant versions of animals are in comparison with their smaller brethren?  Are they just unusually large, or are they GIANT car-sized monsters?

Another thing I wanted to know is is the ratio of [size of giant version] to [size of normal version] the same for each animal, or can giant leopards be the same size as giant mosquitoes?  If the ratios were the same, Giant Mosquitoes would still be much smaller than a Giant Leopard.

Finally right? Exotic Animals are FINALLY getting back into the official release again!  No more modding all of the animals to be regular non-exotics.  Also, it sounds like Civilizations are going to start to have a bigger impact than just what you have access to for embark.  Today's update sounds interesting?  Anyone else excited?
