DF Modding / Caste only noble positions?

Hello everyone, I am undertaking a massive modding project involving Drow elves with multiple paths to power including science, magic, or faith. However I have taken quite a long break from modding in anticipation of the new release and have forgotten some basic principles that I couldn't find with an extensive search.

I was wondering if it was possible to create a noble position that requires a certain caste? Also if I could come back here with questions I can't resolve since I am working full bore on the mod again and am sure to run into a few?

In return I will share my custom Drow graphics (just kidding I would do that anyways) and will hold your modding knowledge in high esteem!

Hello anyone who cares to help, I am having problems getting any version of dwarf fortress to run on my friends old macbook. I did the console commands right but when I try to use the command to open df it says it can not read it.

If you have any suggestions please tell me, I m dying to try the new release!

Hello everyone! I just wanted to share the story of my brothers transformation into a dwarf. It started about a year and a half ago ,a little while after I started playing DF. Me and my brother get together every few months to play videogames and catch up and every time for about a year I had tried to tell my brother about Dwarf Fortress because I was sure he would like it. I never could catch his attention with it though because of how hard it is to put how awesome it is into words, and the one time he wanted to see it I made the mistake of running vanila. I forgot how little sense ASCII makes to untrained eyes.

    Anyways after about a year of that nonsense I decided to force him into a crash course on DF, it was for his own good. I made him watch (and collaborate) as I played a fortress,  this time with Genesis (praise be to Deon!), for 5 years while I explained everything starting with a 15 minute tutorial on what he was looking at. After the first 5 minutes of gameplay (I had already explained material properties and combat) he was hooked.

    This is the part that gets me all teary eyed. After a few months I went to visit him again, I had totaly forgotten about showing him the game. The first thing he says is "come look at my fort!". I was expecting something akin to my first forts. What I saw amazed me, it was a dwaven metropolis second only to the dwarfiest of mega projects. Now he has the benefit of having a $2300 liquid cooled demon to run this on. His population was just under 400 and it had been running for 230 years. It was his first fort. He had 150 masterpiece steel (everything except engravings and random crap was master) clad *weapon*masters.

I would just like to express my thanks to the person who invented the plant pot custom building. It is the best thing to happen to my fortress since the display case. I couldn't find who made it but I found it in genesis so I'm going to guess Deon. I think this would be a great addition to vanila and I wish there was more support for adding great player-made goodies that fit the vanila theme.

Hello, I am in the process of making myself a kobold mod and I was wondering what tag I need to add to an entry such as this one to make it show up in small clusters in any soil layer. Thanks for any help.

Hello fellow modders!

I am busy making myself a kobold mod and I am having a bit of trouble with this new raw system (haven't played much since 40d came).

My list of questions:

1. What is the exact tag line I would use to make a reaction use a crafting shop?

2. Is there a way to set what metals a civ may use?

3. Is it possible to re-name an existing workshop while having it retain all of the default reactions as wel as new reactions, and iff so would it use the new name or the default name in the tagline for the reactions?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarven jealousy?

Do Dwarves feel jealous of their superiors? I have a dwarf who is very unhappy after only about 30 seconds of play. His only moods are:Urist Mcgrumpy has been very unhappy lately. He took joy in slaughter lately. He talked with a friend lately. He was irritated to be forced to talk to a pillar of society recently.

He has no grudges against anyone. Is this a jealous thought?

I have moded the noble raws, The leader is Dwarf Chief, who is succeeded by the Head Dwarf upon death (turns out it doesn't work in fort mode mode). The jealous dwarf is the head dwarf and he is in a military squad under the chief dwarf, and right after they both killed a Hydra he had these thoughts. (The Hydra didn't even touch him so it wasn't that)

I have never seen this thought before, has anybody else and is it related to my moding?

DF Modding / Underground civ.

Hello everyone! I have been doing a bit of research trying to get my modding skills back up to where they were before the new release, which is to say being able to do more than sit there with a big ? over my head like a cartoon.

From looking in the raws it appears that civs can now be made to exists in the underground, my question is if they will send caravans from off-screen in a cavern layer, send them from above ground, or not send them at all.

The answer to this could be very important to the kind of mod I decide to make, I did a bit of searching but all I could find was that a civ could exist underground, nothing about trading or diplomats.

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to share some noble positions I have been working on. Tailored to smaller forts that want to get the most out of its dwarves while maintaining a reasonable noble structure.

Mostly just merging positions and naming them something fitting.

eg: [RESPONSIBILITY:MEET_WORKERS]+[RESPONSIBILITY:MANAGE_PRODUCTION]= GENERAL_MANAGER, [RESPONSIBILITY:TRADE]+[RESPONSIBILITY:ACCOUNTING]=COMMODITY_MANAGER ect

I also kind of fixed the bug when your mayor (removed) dies, changing it to a DWARVEN_CHIEF (that is in charge of appointing the lesser nobles and also acts as a small town guard among other things) who gets replaced by a HEAD_DWARF (elected) in the case of death. (Does this bug still exist in the new release?)

If you don't have anything better to do, I would like to hear comments/suggestions if you have any.

DF Modding / Not allowing certain jobs.

Hello everyone!

I am making a mod for myself and I have run into a major problem, so I have come to you brilliant lot for help. My problem is concerning the jobs that my new race are allowed to use. I have all the jobs I want them to have placed in the entity file, but only mining, woodworking related, and hunting related jobs appear in-game. The embark menu allows me to put points in all the skills I want but I am unable to activate them once I am playing.

Is there some reason I have missed that could be causing this? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello everyone! I am working on a graphics set for the 0.31.01 and I was wondering if there is a list of every position that would need a sprite anywhere? Do dwarves with the diagnostic skill have a different sprite than the other doctor skills, things like that.

I have made a limited search for this but haven't found anything.

Hello all. I have been trying to mod in badgers as pets and it has gone perfectly so far except for one thing. I want them to have a slash attack using it's front left and front right hand (similar to an elephants tusk attacks) but I don't know how to get it to work. I have searched the wiki and these forums and come up short.

Here is the tag I have [ATTACK:MAIN:BYTOKEN:RIGHT FRONT LEG:claw:claws:1:6:SLASH]

I don't think I did it right. Can someone please help me?

Hello fellow DF players! I was wondering about how common the following situation is.

Pretty much every fort I have had (my last 3 stick out in my mind as having this happen for sure) has gotten a stonecrafter in the first wave of migrants. Sometime within the first year, this stonecrafter gets a strange mood and makes an insignificant artifact out of one or two stone. Then I have legendary crafter quality goods to trade for the rest of my forts life.

Do stonecrafters have a higher % chance to mood or something and does this happen to other people?
