DF Suggestions / Re: Some feedback from a starter

There are bugs with dead things, in addition to restrictions.

Named pets will not be butchered. Corpses of tame animals dead (at least those dead from old age) won't either. Neither will sapient creatures.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can't open cages

Will installed cages marked to be dumped appear in the list of cages in the lever-linkage list? Did you remove the dump from the cage? It may be worth checking.

I don't know, I never bother to install a cage before marking its contents for dumping; I just mass-designate stockpiled cages then [ k ] and remove the dump designation from the cage.

One doesn't have to use third-party programs to play Dwarf Fortress. It's a convenience.
The line between convenience and necessity is blurry and subjectively-placed.

And .... ? That's language for you, brother. Words are sorta .... subjective .... in application.

So, where's the overlap, in regards to the current topic? Why is the line blurry?

Willow bark, also

I don't think willow bark should be used as a medicine ....

Why not? It was.

(yeah, I'm going to have thousands of dead dwarves).

Given that 483=110592 .... what are you planning?

Little Mr Scamps is sleeping in his bowl, he's all rolled up but he's nice and warm. He's not scratching my thumb and he's not scratching my face, because he's sleeping in one warm place; the warm little bowl, the kitty bowl. Kitty kitty bowl, kitty bowl. (end singing) That's right.

Bullet bowl, bullet bowl. Kitty bowl? He's not even paying attention to me because he's trying to sleep; he's in his heated bowl.

In the future of Dwarf Fortress we'll all have heated bowls. This I foresee.

You could put a bowl over magma.

And, lo, it has come to pass. Huzzah!

As this thread has surfaced again, I'll say that I've done the same quite a few times before. It would be sensible to have delete burrow bound to either ALT + d or SHIFT + d to prevent inadvertent deletions. Those can take quite a while to paint (plus, military orders)!

Also, thanks for the posts for the bindings, folks. That information is very welcome.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Heart Tissue Issue
« on: June 27, 2011, 10:13:29 pm »

I once had a FB that caused nausea and massive swelling (and subsequent rot) of all body parts. Fortunately only two dwarves got the syndrome, one of which sucumbed to the swelling and the other which is still swollen as a watermellon and hasnt stopped vomiting for over a year. Honeslty Im puzzled as to what to do with him because hes getting vomit EVERYWHERE but hes a valuable member of my cavern defense militia.

Hahahaha. Love it! Maybe give him an entrance-burrow to defend. Then, he can vomit in the face of the enemy, then slay them. Is he competent, and does he pass out at all?

I use cleanmap to prevent spread of FB disease. Since I spent over an in-game year making a dwarven bath system at the entrance to the caverns, complete with grates and drainage system plus a lovely waterfal I expect it to work as such and not a pool of contaminants. And on top of that it requires a yearly maintenance in the form of chopping down all the godam trees that keep clogging the water cannals
If I want a godam pool of poison I have a FB with  deadly secretions (that I ocasionally let my marksdwarves use for target practive) swimming in my fortified cavern dam that has almost replaced all the water in there with FB extract pools. Hes become the unnoficial pet of the fort along with a quadruped made of scist that is also trapped swimming there and is also used as a training pincussion for marksdwarves.

Alas, I prefer to not use third-party programs, so cleanmap's out in my case.  However, after a last-ditch mass-enabling of diagnosis, surgery, and related skills, things seem to be .... in hand. At least, no one has died yet. Hell, a couple have even gotten back up and about. It's fifty-fifty on whether they head right back to rest, though. I'm hoping for better extract- and syndrome-management tools .... someday. This sort of thing should be a bit easier to control. I shouldn't complain; I had twelve years in this fortress without significant troubles.  It still seems we're lacking some tools to deal with what the game throws at us.

The sustained and constant release of miasma in the hospital is starting to disturb me. Glad the rotters have some spiffy chefs feeding 'em.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Heart Tissue Issue
« on: June 27, 2011, 09:30:45 pm »
Closest I've got for experience is a similar syndrome, which rotted the pancreas away in any dwarf exposed. However, the organ's lack-of-function has thus far (after eight years) failed to cause significant issues. Or any, really. I was very curious to see how the alcoholics would deal with diabetes.

Of course, a beast that just showed up had poison breath. Which caused total numbness and necrosis in exposed tissue. Which is one-hundred-percent of four or five dwarves, and a fair amount of tissue from another dozen or so. It is rather a large problem. No sterilization procedures are in place. The doctors are getting sick. Nice to see surgery is used for something, though. I guess.

Seriously, it's excessive.

Ghosts don't possess anyone in the current versions.  If one of your dwarves is possessed, that's because they're having a strange mood and is completely unrelated to the ghost hanging around.

On the contrary:

I get a "no access to statue" building error every time I try to place a statue anywhere. I've placed plenty up till now. Anyone know what's causing this?

I presume you've got statues. In line with FuzzyZergling.:

a) Are statues forbidden? Check out yr [ z ] stocks screen for the list of statues.

b) Are they still in-workshop? If so, is that workshop locked off from access?

c) Is the statue in transit or tasked for a hauling or dump job?
