First, though given what you typed I don't think this is the the issue, you've double-checked that the value is input in ALLCAPS?

I think that if the autobackup value is still set to "no," the game's behavior is to autosave by overwriting the main save folder. So, if you play for a while, the game autosaves, and you then quit playing, the save on exiting the game overwrites the autosave. Have you tried turning on autobackup?

Gonna need dwarven rum blocks, dwarven wine blocks, dwarven ale blocks, Dwarven beer blocks and magma blocks. Though magma blocks would mostly be to a gloss.

Intelligence is tough to quantify (hell, it's tough to hash out a definition for the concept), and for about any population will have variation. I don't think there's a single result that a mutation would destine a creature to die (barring those nasty DNA errors that make a fetus non-viable).

Really, individuals are probably functionally irrelevant in the larger picture of adaptation and niches. Populations provide a better foundation to see change in species over time.

The other major barrier I see is that adaptation (in this case, for intelligence, even in a closely-related primate) takes time. A lot of time. I don't think that bloody naked mole dogs should have a shot in hell of such massive change over the course of a century. Or a millennium. Even ten-thousand, a hundred-thousand years is dodgy. Much as I'd like to play Dwarf Fortress — Animal Farm, the model presented here is far too simplifed.

Moreover, genetics without any genes is .... well, not genetics. Can't dredge up a good analogy.
