DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress music in piano
« on: April 24, 2010, 10:42:01 pm »
Okay, so the program I editted into my last post seems like it'll be extremely useful for this, it even has a little virtual keyboard you can control with the mouse which you can edit the song with and it tells you which notes on the keyboard to press. The fact that my piano isn't next to my computer and that I can't print the music out is a problem, though I prefer playing by ear anyway.

EDIT1: Found a way to make sheet music on this program, but it costs $30.

Let's see if Google can fix this...
Export to MIDI, convert MIDI to score?

I didn't know anyone was interested in this. If it's wanted I could try to make some sheet music and post it here, then try applying my meager piano skills to it.

There's just one problem I've found so far; Toady didn't add the string tune notes to that sheet music he made.

Just looked at LoopyDood's link. Seems I won't have to make the sheet music.

EDIT 2: How the hell do you work this program

EDIT 3: This program only works for guitar tabs, doesn't it?
Yes, it's only really for making guitar tabs. I instead recommend editing the MIDI file with your changes, then converting that to sheet music with this: http://www.8notes.com/midi_sheet_music/
I can't really recommend a MIDI editor as I've never used one. Check here, I suppose: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MIDI_editors_and_sequencers

Damn. I can only just read piano sheet music, I doubt I'll be able to edit MIDI (which I've never heard of before this point) into piano...

BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN I WON'T TRY!
Okay, I lied, I have done some MIDI editing. I had to use GarageBand to compose music for a music production class I took. It's very simple. Each line up represents a semitone up, the rectangles represent notes, and the length of the rectangles represent the amount of time the notes are played. The music you've composed already can be played back so you can listen.

But that's just speaking from my experience with GarageBand.

This is pretty cool. Though I wish a Grand Master Pianist would play the DF theme on piano. I would just listen to that all day.
I posted this in another thread, but I may as well do this here.

It would be AWESOME if somebody could do a piano version of the song with extended chords, etc.; it was composed around the limitations of the guitar. So much more could be done with it on a piano. I'd try it, but currently I'm learning it on guitar. Hey, just because I made the tab doesn't mean I know how to play it. :D

50
And you made it awesome.
Seriously, I'm going to use that for my in-game music.

because I can :P
Okay.

That's the best thing I'VE EVER HEARD!
It sounds exactly like old 8-bit game music! The way you made it so only one note plays at once gave it a truly unique and surreal sound and feel.
LoopyDood approves.

Open the Guitar Pro file in TuxGuitar.
Go to Print.
Uncheck everything except "Show Score" and maybe "Black and White Mode".
Print,
et voila!
MIDI file also available for those who wanted it. ;)

People seem to want the MIDI more than the Guitar Pro file. :o

Since I updated them both, there has been 44 MIDI downloads and only 19 tab downloads. ???

I didn't know at first that there was more than tablature in that file, I think you should make that more clear (not everyone reads tab).
Thanks, I changed the main post to make that more clear.

Any chance we could have it on Ukulele?
Nah im joking, this is awesome. Thanks a lot.
Hehe, sure thing. You can have it on any instrument; Open the Guitar Pro file in TuxGuitar, click on the instrument type at the bottom, (It's at Nylon Str Guitar currently) transpose as needed, then print the score out. Let me know how it goes if you really want to attempt it. :)

Holy shit seriously? Downloading NOW.
That's assuming you can read score rather than tabs. I'm sure that with enough effort it could be properly transcribed to Ukulele tab, but not quick and dirty with TuxGuitar.

Wow I like that version. MIDI music is so good at sounding like old video game music. I feel a deeper appreciation of the music in the game after hearing it switched to another medium.
That's because old game music IS MIDI. It'd be impossible for early games to even have music without MIDI because of the file size considerations. Even a short MP3 file exceeds the amount of disk space these games had many times over, and the audio compression technology they had then wasn't even close to the efficiency of MP3.
Old game music is often in module format, allowing for own samples to be played back as well as samples on the computer. MIDI is sometimes used too.
Ah, I see. I'm reading about module on Wikipedia. I always just assumed MIDI.

57
Wait people like it? Maybe I'll make another version where I put some effort into it.
I didn't do the whole thing because it sounded bad at the tempo change right after it fades away.
The whole thing right now is me literally just dragging and dropping a new instrument and some pre-made drum loops.
Eh, I found a couple more minor mistakes in my tab. I'll fix them and upload them in a bit, along with the new MIDI file. I do however think you should tweak the tempo using TuxGuitar a bit before starting on the redub, it's not perfect.

Edit: Done, here's the MIDI file.

The MIDI file is only a direct export from TuxGuitar; It could be done WAY better with some proper software and someone willing to perfect it. For example, it's not possible in TuxGuitar to make one note sustain as others play over it without making a separate track, there's no crescendo/decrescendo/ritardando/accelerando function, etc.

It would be great if somebody could do that.

*collects midi file*
LucasUP begins a mysterious construction!
LucasUP has created FutureOfTheFortress.mp3, a terrible science fiction instrument re-assignment of the Dwarf Fortress theme, made in five minutes with FL studio.
It is decorated with corn. It menaces with spikes of sleep deprivation.
http://drop.io/9rvexpp/asset/futureofthefortress-mp3
LucasUP has fallen unconscious.
Heh, I like it.  :D

Why didn't you do the whole thing?

The next step to the aforementioned player remixes is a MIDI redub.  Any chance of that?
http://www.mediafire.com/?rjjtzzqljj0

It's just exported from TuxGuitar, but it's MIDI. Anyone who wants to try a redub can start from there.
